February 15 | DADA Classroom | Morning As Ole climbed the stairs down to the third floor, she hoped Iola was already in her classroom and not in the Slytherin quarters. Ole had been avoiding the dungeons ever since the potions incident. Not only was she trying to stay out of Mael's way, knowing she really stepped on that particular interaction, she also wasn't interested in putting herself in that claustrophobic environment anytime soon. She knew she was going to have to eventually face those fears, both of them and why her reactions were so irrational. That wasn't a priority in the middle of a term. Her students deserved her full attention. Rounding the final turn of the steps, she could see a soft light coming from the classroom. It was emphasized by the darkness outside the windows in the hallway. The sun was coming up, but it was another cloud covered day with more snow on its way. It was the early mornings in the castle that Ole enjoyed the most. It was almost peaceful as the students made their way to breakfast in the Great Hall, still trying to wake themselves up. Mornings were Ole's time to get her classroom ready for lessons of the day. She preferred to do that after a night's sleep to ensure her mind was fresh. Thanks to Iola those mornings were now pleasantly warm. The DADA professor had been a proficient teacher, helping Ole feel more comfortable with some of the more useful spells for daily life in an ancient castle. Wanting to thank the professor for the time invested in correcting her spell work, Ole had gone to her own private library. There was a book, Ole was sure, would be appreciated by Iola and maybe even useful. Standing in the doorway, she knocked softly. Looking down at the large tome of Magick Moste Evil, Ole had a moment of hesitation that maybe a book about the Dark Arts in it's original runic text with a parallel translation might be considered an odd token of appreciation.

It was those early morning moments, when she was waking from her slumber, where Iola felt the pain most keenly. The brunette sighed as the heaviness sat on her chest, her hand reaching out to stroke her cat's fur in an effort to stem the tears. Weeks have passed since the realization she had torn her student's family apart, but still Iola suffered. How could she not? She had a daily reminder of her actions; two living, breathing reminders. Iola shifted in her bed as she moved to sit up, Chili moving with her. She squinted at the clock and saw it was barely four-thirty in the morning. Another sigh escaped her. It was no use trying to go back to sleep - she knew she wouldn't be able to. This had become her new normal. The pain came to her in waves and Iola buried her face into her hands, letting them wash over her. Every morning, she gave herself twenty minutes to fully feel the weight of what she had done. In the moment, she had no choice, but now? Now she wondered what would have happened if they turned their wands on the Death Eaters. She knew there was no use thinking about what ifs, but she just couldn't help it. If she had tried harder, would she have been able to save them both?
Chili rubbed against her arm with a purr and Iola lifted her head. Her time was up. The witch swung her legs over the side of her bed and stood, her hands running through her long hair and tying it up to get ready. Slowly, she dressed herself in her robes and put on a little makeup, mainly to cover her dark circles. She let down her hair and styled it in loose curls before pinning it up onto her head. Iola looked in the mirror for a solid minute before she finally rose and left her quarters, Chili padding after her. She made way to her classroom where she sunk into her chair, waving her wand to light the candles and start her tea. There were more essays she had to grade and now was as good of a time as any to do it. She worked quickly while her tea brewed and, by the time it was done, she had nearly finished. Iola took a break to make her cup and sip on it slowly before finishing her task. Her gaze lifted to look at the clock. It was nearly seven o'clock now. Perhaps she had time to reply to some letters before heading down to breakfast.
There was a soft knock that sounded from the door to her classroom just as Iola had pulled out her letters. "Come in," she called, moving them aside. She had no idea who would be here to see her so early in the morning, but she would welcome a distraction from her swirling thoughts. A small smile touched her lips as the door opened and in walked Ole. Iola was glad to have the Ancient Runes professor as a friend and she was even happier to help her out with her transition back to the magical world. "Ole," she greeted her warmly. "I've just made some tea. Would you care for some?" She stood to gather another cup and bring it to her desk. "I wasn't expecting the pleasure of your company so early this morning. What brings you here?"

No turning back, Ole thought once she'd been seen. Stepping inside the classroom, she nodded. "Tea would be great," she said, setting the large tome down on a nearby desk, and helped herself, not wanting to make much fuss out of her visit. "I wasn't sure if you'd be up so early let alone in the classroom. I thought I'd start here and work my way down the stairs," she rambled. Why on earth am I still nervous around Iola, Ole wondered. The DADA professor had only been kind and accepting of her. Part of her still felt a little silly over her reaction in the potions classroom, maybe that was it. "I just wanted to thank you for your help with my classroom. And working with my charms." And not making me feel like a failure, Ole added to herself. Rubbing her forehead, she sipped her tea to give her mind some time to catch up with her mouth. "You've done a lot for me to feel like I belong here and I wanted to thank you for your kindness and brought you a gift," she finally explained.
Setting her tea down, Ole picked up the book, rubbed her hand over the embossed leather. It was gift she'd been given after her work for Yuri. She had appreciated studying the translation but wasn't able to appreciate the contents. "I thought you might find this book of interest in your studies. It's the original runic inscription of Magick Moste Evil. I know the restricted section has a full translated copy, but things can get lost in translation," she explained, wondering if she should have picked a more benign title as she spoke. Ole wasn't adverse to studying the dark arts. Not everyone would agree. "I've always thought the best way to develop proper defenses is by understanding the origins and fundamentals of the dark arts. I thought you might find it useful." Ole finished and looked to Iola to judge her reaction.

In the past month or so, Iola had grown quite fond of Ole. Liliana had been gone from Hogwarts for ten years now and while her relationship with Abbey has gotten better over the years, she still often felt lonely within the walls of the castle. Bryant was a friend, but he was also Bryant. She supposed that she had Keelin, but the flying instructor was closer to Abbey than Iola and, well, it felt nice to have a friend she could lean on if necessary. Ole helped herself to some tea and Iola smiled. "I haven't been able to sleep as well lately," she offered. "I typically come here when I wake to get some work done." She didn't explain why she hadn't been sleeping well. It was something she wasn't sure she wanted to share with anyone other than her family. Her brows raised slightly as Ole said she had brought her a gift and her blue gaze flickered over to the tome she had set down just moments ago. There was no need to thank her, she thought, but she accepted it nonetheless.
Iola waited patiently as Ole picked up the book and started to explain what it was. Her lips turned upwards into a small smile and she folded her hands on top of one another in front of her. It was a thoughtful gift and one that Iola was very interested in reading. Iola knew some of the Dark Arts firsthand, but a tome this old was bound to have some surprises for her. It was good to study the Dark Arts to come up with ways to fight against them. Voldemort may be a thing of the past, but there were plenty of dark witches and wizards still lingering. "That's very thoughtful of you, thank you. It'll be very useful in my lessons," she said at last once Ole had finished speaking. "I full-heartedly agree with you. Most of my lessons came from experience, but I'm sure there are things I haven't thought of or experienced before." Her time with the Death Eaters had been fleetingly short. She didn't know the way to create Inferi and she didn't know how to curse objects with deadly curses. However... she had used a few Unforgivables in her time as a Death Eater. "I was glad to help. I've come to think of you as a friend over the last month," she said with a soft smile.
