CARMEN CANEK

Character History: Born to Aitor and Elena Canek, Carmen was the last child born to the Canek family. The last of 7 children, she wasn’t unfamilar with being forgotten. She was often taken care of by her oldest sisters, Sofía and Isabella, who filled in when their mother and father were away at work. Busy professors, Aitor and Elena did not have time to take care of their children as much as they’d like. As such, Elena would often cook meals and leave the children to fend for themselves, creating a strange isolation between children and parents. She and her siblings, though vastly differnet in perosnality and age, were incredibly close, relying on each other for everything. Food, walking to school, studying, picking out clothes, buying school supplies. The younger siblings relied on their older siblings to take care of them as parents would.
When Carmen was 7, she and her family moved to Mexico City where her parents began working at the top University in Méixco; Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Méixco. Mexico City was strange, far more popualted than Acapulo. No longer could she run out to the sandy shores and dive into salty seas as she once may have in Acapulco. Carmen can't recall when exactly she started noticing how strange her parents and siblings were, but she does recall that once her oldest brother moved overseas, that things were different. Once her siblings turned 10, they would go off with Samuel, far, far away to London which felt a million miles away to young Carmen.
She knew things were strange with her family, but she was unable to remember why. She just assumed all families were like them-- with strange things floating about the house, dishes washing themselves, and books flying off the shelf when a toddler got too angry. Were their families that didn't experience that? How peculiar Carmen would've found that.
Finally, when she turned 10, all her siblings were go, off and away to London with Samuel, who had since graduated university and started a career. It was finally her turn to go off and reunite with her siblings who she'd only seen during holidays. Thankfully, her parents also decided it was time to reunite with their children-- and so at the age of 10, Carmen Canek and her parents packed up their entire existence and moved to London-- and Carmen would've been lying when she said it was difficult to acclimate. The language was hard, but Carmen had been learning English since she was a small child, the culture was drastically different than what she was used to, and the cold! Oh the cold was the worst! The winters felt as if they were centuries long and summer was far too rainy to enjoy.
After only a year of living in London, the girl began to resent in until one day she received a letter that explained everything in her life-- a wizard, or, well, technically a witch, her mother corrected once she proclaimed that she was a wizard. Her family was filled with witches and wizards alike, running in their family for many centuries. Both Canek and Clarke possessed magical abilities-- thought it was Elena who insisted her children attend school at her alma mater.
And so too did Carmen follow in the footsteps of her parents and siblings and attend the wizarding school, forcing her to learn more and more in this unfamiliar environment. Carmen was clumsy with many things, taking a longer time than other students adjusting to her magical prowess. Charms were hard to remember, their movements getting lost in her muddied minds. Potions made her head hurt and she almost always ended up with singed hair. Other classes, such as history or flying came a bit easier. And oh how Carmen adored qudditch-- it was the one thing in the magical world that she understood. Soaring above the school grounds was intoxicating-- it reminded her of the warm days in Acapulco swimming and the freedom that came with it.
Though she only recent graduated, her hopes for becoming a professional quidditch player were cut short when an injury took her out for a game when important scouts were going to be there-- still, she's not too heart broken. Finding a home at the Daily Prophet as a photographer was easy and fulfilling. Samuel, her eldest brother, had an easy time finding her work at his job-- and journalism, especially wizarding journalism, was somewhat thrilling. If she couldn't play quidditch, at least she could take pictures of it.

Role Playing Sample: Little toes sink into wet sand, small body sinking deep into the grainy beach as waves crash over her tiny feet. The sun burns the back of her neck but she doesn’t care, basking in the warm sunlight like a snake on the rock. Only a moment later when her oldest sister comes running down the beach and scoops Carmen up in her hands. “Sofía!” The little girl squeals, her older sister holding tightly as they spin, threatening to fall into the water. “¡Me asustaste! ¡Qué sucede contigo!” Carmen cries, throwing her arms around the older girl. “Es hora de cenar. Mamá quiere que vuelvas a casa, pollita! ¡Vamos, pollita! ¡Haremos una carrera!” Sofía drops Carmen, giving her only a few seconds to stbalize herself before she runs off, kicking up san. “Isla! Jose! ¡Vamos!” Sofía cries out. Carmen does her best to catch up with her older siblings but their legs are much longer, they cover far more ground than her stumpy little legs. “¡Esperar!” Carmen cries, holding her hands up to wave to her siblings as she scoops her school bags up. “Wait for me!” She cries, not wanting to be left behind. Her siblings were always running ahead, leaving Carmen to run as fast as she could catch up.
Luckily, this time, Samuel wouldn’t let the youngest Canek get left behind. Scooping the girl up, he tossed her quickly on his back. “Hold on tight.” Her brother grinned with a mischevious smile. It was only fair Carmen won at least one race before they moved away from Acapulo. She didn’t know what Méixco City would hold, but she knew it wouldn’t be as fun as chasing crabs in the sand or splashing salty water at her friends on summer days. She would miss the salty air of Acapulo more than she knew. Laughing mischeviously, the two siblings finally surpassed their brother and sister, crying out triumphantly as they ran the few blocks home. Though Carmen didn’t know it, this would be the last bit of home she would have for a while.
