Leaving the castle and making her way across the lawn Lina tried to swallow down her guilt. Just the other day had been her father's birthday, apart from the first year, she'd hadn't spent his birthday with him. And this year he'd even turned 40! That was a big milestone and after everything he'd done for her Lina really wished she'd get a chance to celebrate with him.
Even worse? It was Lina's birthday, her sixteenth birthday even and she was stuck in a big stupid castle in cold stupid Scotland. Something about holidays always made Lina sad. She refused to think that it might have something to do with the fact that her mother had died before Lina ever got the chance to meet her, let alone know her. She definitely refused to give Raheem Zaman any thought, if he wanted nothing to do with her then Lina wanted nothing to do with him.
He was happy, back in Egypt, with his wife and tire four children in their big pretty house that had never really had any space for her.
At least Ra'd had space for Lina, he was there, he wanted her.
Sniffling a little Lina entered the forest. She stubbornly rubbed at her eyes and found a nice flat rock and sat down, chewing her bottom lip. Part of her just really wanted to hug Ra'd. Impossible as that was, she missed him.
But he was in London, and she was the forest around a big stupid castle all alone.
The sound of scuffling and tiny paws drew Lina's attention. She looked over and saw a long white. . . . something scratching in the underbrush and sniffing away. The head lifted and the cutest little nose sniffed the air. With the back of her sleeve Lina wiped her cheeks, which were not damp!
Head tilted to one side Lina studied critter. It was long, not quite as large as a ferret, with short little legs, white fur turning rust brown on top, the long fluffy tail was darker at the tip. Over all, it was kinda silly how long it was. "What are you?" She asked the critter, not actually expecting an answer. "Are you a baby ferret?"

They weren't allowed to be in the Forbidden Forest, hence the word 'Forbidden', but the Coin Competition was still very much on! Ralph was sure it would continue until the end of the current school year. It wouldn't be too much longer before everyone was drowning in final exams and then summer vacation! He was excited to get back home, but there were other affairs to be dealt with first. Everyone knew that Ralph Sagewater had an adventurer's heart, but he was terrified of getting in trouble. Most times, he was tagging along with his friends, but today he'd taken a different approach. Instead of getting Liny or Ryder to accompany him, Ralph had decided to venture out alone. The last time he'd come into the forest, he and Liny had run into some nasty fairies that had tried to drag Liny away. It had been a frightening experience. He was hoping that in the daylight, he wouldn't run into any trouble. With his pet rat Basil on his shoulder, Ralph entered the forest.
Talk amongst the under classmen was that the Slytherin Tyler Frankz had moved the coin from the spot where Liny and Ralph had dropped it way back in January. Ralph had recently turned thirteen, and now he had this idea in his head that he was older, wiser, and braver. He could get the coin, take it deeper into the forest, and claim the title of Coin Master for the remainder of the term. Still, his heart beat like a drum in his chest, and every sound made him want to jump out of his skin. The forest wasn't nearly as intimidating as it was at night, but it still had an ominous feel to it. He held his wand in his hand, his steps cautious. He could hear someone talking in the distance. It sounded like...
"Lina?" Ralph knew he probably should have avoided the Prefect, but it was odd seeing her in a spot that could get her in trouble too. He peered a bit closer. What was she looking at and why was she talking to it?

Quickly Lina rubbed her cheeks, making double sure that her face was dry before she looked up. Standing between the trees Lina saw a younger housemate, one much too young to be alone in the forest in her books. Not that Lina had the moral high ground, she was in the forest alone herself after all.
The critter Lina had been watching clearly had no fear as it merely paused for a moment then returned to it search.
"Ralph, right?" She asked, just to be sure. Lina didn't know all of her underclassmen, she knew most of them, but not all. "What are you doing out here? You know it's rather dangerous out here don't you?" Lina sat up straight, arms crossed as she studied the young puff.

Ralph waited for Lina to turn around, and gave a small nod when she spoke his name. "That's me," he perked up with a bright smile. He crossed his arms behind his back and looked away when she asked what he was doing out there. He knew it was breaking the rules, but he had to be brave! He had to make sure Tyler Frankz's reign came to an end! "Well...I'm uh...sort of doing a scavenger hunt," he told her. It wasn't a complete lie. He did have to find a tiny coin in this giant forest. The rules were that the coin had to be placed near the path so no one got lost. It was also enchanted, so Revelio could be used to find it. He gave a small smile when she said it was dangerous. "I know, but if I win, Hufflepuff gets all the glory. Oh, and Basil is keeping a lookout for me." He the little rat perked up when his name was spoken. "Is that your pet," he asked, changing the subject. He pointed to the little creature that was searching the foliage. "I didn't know you could bring anything aside from a toad, cat, or owl," he said, taking a step closer. "Can I pet him?"

A scavenger hunt? Well that sounded both dangerous and fun. The way Lina figured it she had two real choices: keep an eye on this 'scavenger hunt' and make sure no one got hurt, or tell a teacher and totally ruin everyone's fun but make sure that people were safe. Now Lina knew what she ought to do, but she was also fifteen years old and no one actually wanted to be known as a 'Buzz Kill'.
"Scavenger hunt?" Lina inquired hesitantly. "Isn't it dangerous to have a scavenger hunt in the forest?" She was clearly worried about this scavenger hunt and what it could possibly lead to. Should she really let them continue with it? It was hard to say, but, for the moment, Lina was in the forest with Ralph and so she couldn't tell any teachers about the scavenger hunt whether she wanted to or not. That gave Lina time to mull things over.
It was clear that Ralph was excited for this little game, listening to him she smiled. "Oh well if Basil is looking out for you then I suppose I don't have to worry about you, do I?" She joked with a giggle. The rat, Basil, was such a cute little thing and clearly well trained.
Glancing down, then back to her fellow Puff she jumped to stop him before he could touch the strange critter. "Oh no! He isn't my pet," Lina explained. "I suppose he's sort of like, a new friend? We just met, I have no idea what he is but I think he looks like some sort of ferret, or maybe a weasel?" She wondered aloud, brow furrowed as she looked down. The little guy had been startled by Lina when she stopped Ralph from petting the wild animal. It clearly hadn't gone far though, jumping to hide but still watching, still hoping to find some food.

Ralph was convinced that he probably shouldn't have told Lina anything about the Coin Challenge. The underclassmen would be super disappointed if their game abruptly ended because someone decided to run their mouth. He wished he'd kept his mouth shut. "Yes," he answered with equal hesitation. "We thought that it would be okay if we stayed on the path," he told her honestly. He didn't want to lie. Ralph had been taught that lying was bad. "And with it being daytime, we figured it would be less dangerous." He rubbed his hands nervously. "Please don't tell on us. The term is almost over and then we won't ever play games here again." His eyes watered as he stared up at the older girl. Everyone was going to be really mad at him. He visibly relaxed when she said that it would be fine since Basil was keeping a lookout. Thank Merlin. "Thank you so much Lina. I promise you won't regret it." He gave Basil a little pet and slipped the rat one of the crunched up biscuits he kept in his pocket. Basil happily took the snack. He was obviously not concerned with the creature on the ground.
Ralph blinked when Lina stopped him from petting the creature. This wasn't her pet. He looked a bit sheepish. Oops. Ralph loved animals, so sometimes he forget they weren't all friendly. He pulled his hand close to his chest. "He looks cool," Ralph commented. "You think there's more," he asked.

"Path or no Path, day or not, this little game still sounds like it could be dangerous." Lina scolded lightly, weighing the pros and cons of tell a professor about this little 'Coin Challenge'. It was hard to do what one had to do, when you knew you'd piss a lot of people off doing so. But Lina also knew that if someone got hurt then she'd be blaming herself for the rest of forever. Merlin she really wished that she'd been told nothing about this game. "What if someone got hurt? Or went missing?" Lina asked the young boy as kindly as she could. She didn't want him thinking that Lina blamed him, it took more than one person to get a game like this going.
Folding at the sight of Ralph's tears Lina sighed, "Oh there's no reason to cry. I'm not going to run off to get a professor," she assured him, but, just because Lina wasn't going to run to tell at professor at that moment, didn't mean she wouldn't walk up to one with her worries in the future. The half truth tasted bitter in Lina's mouth, given the family she'd grown up with Lina hated lying and liars, and she did her best not to lie. But sometimes she didn't know what else to say.
"Yes he looks very cool, and brave too." Lina agreed with a smile, Moving carefully Lina crouched down next to Ralph to get a better look at the critter. It had jumped, rushing back to hide when Ralph had approached. Now that the students were still the stoat came forward, scratching at the same place and sniffing about. "Perhaps a little too brave," Lina joked softly. "There's probably others around, I think? I honestly don't know much about rat, weasels, hamsters, and ferrets. Do you think there'd be more?"
