Character History: Marie Lastinger never knew her father. In fact, she didn’t even know his name. All she knew was that he came into her mother’s life like a whirlwind and left just as quickly. He was just some wizard from France who happened upon her mother outside a jewelry store in Paris. She supposed that she must have gotten some traits from him, considering she was made of half of him, but she was never able to figure out what they were. Her mother, Anais, was a Veela who owned an art and dance studio in the countryside outside of Paris. Growing up, Marie would learn about her Veela ancestry and start to feel a connection to that part of her. She would dance and sing with her mother, learn all the moves and the secret ways of the Veela. It wasn’t until she had been accepted into Beauxbatons that she remembered there was another side to her as well. She was a witch before she was a Veela.
The beginning of her life had been spent learning about the Veela side of herself, but her school years really showed and taught her of the magical side of her. Marie went to school, with a wand powered by her own mother’s hair, and she started to excel. Drawn to healing magic and charms, she poured herself into her studies with the hope that, one day, she would become a Healer. Potions and Herbology were fascinating, but she loved the beauty in her charms. Marie was popular and fun-loving and she got along great with her peers. School went well for her. When she graduated, she accepted a job at the local hospital. It was there that she would meet a charming young wizard who had come to France for adventure and fortune. Harold Winchester had the courage to ask her out before he had been discharged and the rest was history.
Harold was a Cursebreaker for Gringotts in London, having come to France to find an ancient witch’s tomb. Marie was enamored with him and all his stories of his adventures. It wasn’t long before the two of them fell in love and she fell pregnant. He was excited to become a father and he made promises of marrying Marie as soon as this job was over. Marie was swept up into this romance and wanted nothing more than to start a family with this man. Then he found the tomb and left to go explore it. He never returned. It was months before Gringotts sent anyone to go find him and Marie was due any minute. When they confirmed that he had perished inside, she went into labor. She was forced to deal with the overwhelming grief of losing the love of her life compiled with the joy of bringing new life into this world.
Anita Marie Winchester was born twelve hours later, healthy and crying. The grief of Harold’s loss lessened when the babe was placed on Marie’s chest, easing even more when her mother finally walked in. The first few days of Anita’s life were filled with love and mourning. Marie, barely nineteen and a single mother, was sent home with her daughter a few days after. Unable to stomach the idea of working in the same hospital she met Harold, Marie would accept a job at St. Mungo’s in London. Her mother came with her to help raise Anita, the small family moving into a large apartment in Bristol. For most of Anita’s early childhood, her mother worked long, grueling hours to support them while her grandmother raised her. Anita fell in love with her Veela ancestry just as her mother did, but what she loved more than all of that was the art of it all. She loved to dance and sing and paint. Anais showed the young witch everything she knew.
Then Anita got her Hogwarts letter. Marie and Anais both encouraged her to go, to learn all she could, but to, most importantly, have fun. She went, her grandmother’s hair in her wand, and was immediately sorted into Gryffindor. Much like her mother, Anita fell completely for magic and all its wonders. She, too, was drawn to charms and healing magic and soon had the same ambitions as her mother. But by her second year, she started to be drawn more to Quidditch. Anita was her father’s daughter, after all. She joined the house team and soon began to rise to stardom. Well, what little stardom there was at Hogwarts. Riding a broom came naturally to her and she took to the sport very quickly. As the years went on, there were some talks of her going professional after graduating. By the time she was fifteen, she was Captain of the team. Quidditch is how she met her boyfriend, Ian Lancaster, Slytherin’s Keeper.
Her mother also remarried around the time she turned fifteen and had another girl, Layla. Anita was thrilled to become a big sister and she doted on her baby sister as much as she possibly could. Whenever she was home from Hogwarts, she was helping take care of her sister. Her mother was around more as they grew more comfortable and, eventually, moved into a three story house. Anais was around for the first couple of years of Layla’s life before her health would start to decline. Anita was allowed time at home from school to say goodbye to her grandmother when she was on her deathbed. Anais gave more hairs to the family for Layla and any future children. The grief Anita felt at her grandmother’s passing was immense. A heavy darkness fell upon her life in the months following, but when she woke to a brand new easel, a last gift from Anais, light started to filter through.
Anita poured herself into her art, reconnecting with the memory of her grandmother’s lessons. Through art, she was able to heal. She started to work on a portrait of her grandmother, one she would enchant with her likeness, so she would always have her with her. Anita finished it by the end of her seventh year. Her mother had a third child, a boy, Pierre, and Anita loved and cared for him as much as she did her sister. Since their grandmother was gone, Anita took it upon herself to pass over her teachings, with their mother’s help. They kept the spirit of Anais alive.
When she graduated, she accepted a position at St. Mungo’s on the fourth floor. She married her longtime boyfriend, Ian Lancaster, and moved in with him. Anita fell into a routine after that, one that went on for many, many years. Until the night of their tenth wedding anniversary when Anita caught Ian in bed with another witch. Anita had always been hot-blooded; it was a side-effect of having Veela blood run through your veins. But when she saw him with her, in the bed they shared together, she saw red. She kicked him out and filed for divorce the next morning. Anita left her job at St. Mungo’s, no longer finding joy in healing with the heartbreak she was going through. She spent many weeks wallowing in her misery until she saw a job posting at Hogwarts for the Art and Music professor. Art was able to heal her once before, and a change in scenery would do her good! Anita applied and interviewed at the castle.
That was two years ago now and Anita spends most of her time at Hogwarts. Her divorce had finally been finalized and she moved into a new place. She was right that this change would be good for her. Anita is back to herself again, finding joy in her passion and her students.
