It was well past curfew, but Ralph was craving a snack. He rolled out of his bed, grabbed his robes, and hurried towards the Kitchens. He slid inside and grinned mischievously. He had the entire area to himself! Well, aside from his pet rat, Basil. Speaking of, Ralph reached into his pocket and set the tiny creature down. "It's a party of two, Basil. Let's chow down and have some fun." Yes, it was after midnight. Yes, he might get detention. Yes, Liam would be mad. Still, he was full of energy and he couldn't sleep. What else was he supposed to do? Hang out in the common room was the proper answer, but that was boring and Ralph was anything but boring! He was the big one-three now! That made him an official teenager, and he vowed to be more adventurous and braver! Starting with the simple task of a midnight snack. He found a house elf and without much trouble, he had plenty of ice cream and candy and biscuits to chow down on. Today was Friday, so it wasn't like he'd have to pay attention in classes. Most of the coursework on Friday was review, and if he really needed someone to fill him in, he'd just ask Liny. See, he had it all figured out. Without any more hesitation, not that there had been much to begin with, he started into sugary treats. Basil sat across from him on the table, nibbling on a biscuit crumb. Ralph finished his ice cream and stood on the bench. "I'm king of the castle!" He started dancing along the length of the seat, completely unaware that someone had entered the room.

Ryder couldn't sleep. He'd been having a harder time of it lately, ever since his mother's passing. The young boy didn't have the words to express just how hard that had hit him. Then Noah got in a fight with their father literally minutes after she was gone and just up and left. Ryder hadn't seen his older brother since. Well, except for in the Quidditch magazines. It wasn't the same, though. At least his brother wrote to him once a week, but Ryder didn't really know what to say about everything he's been feeling. He just tells him how school is going, tells him about the adventures he goes on. Sometimes he'll talk about Quidditch, but not often. There was, like, this understanding between them that the sport takes a backseat with them. Neither of them needed a reminder of their father and his burdening expectations.
Groaning, he rolled over in his bed, trying for the fiftieth time to fall asleep. His mind just kept spinning with racing thoughts and feelings that he couldn't make any sense of. His eyes were shut tightly, but the noise in his head wouldn't relent. It was no use; he wasn't going to be able to sleep right now. Letting out a heavy sigh, he sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed, jumping out of it. He slid his feet into his slippers and grabbed his robe, throwing it around himself as he walked to the Common Room. It was empty when he arrived, the only sound was the crackling of embers from a dying fire. Sometimes, when he had trouble sleeping, his mother would take him to the kitchen and fix him up a sweet snack with a cup of warm milk. It always worked when she did it. Maybe it would work tonight.
He snuck out of the common room and wandered through the dungeons until he came upon the painting covering the entrance to the kitchens. The young wizard stepped up on his toes and reached to tickle the pear, smiling at the giggle it produced, and leaned back onto his heels as it swung open. Ryder stepped through to find Ralphie dancing on a bench, his brows shooting up in surprise. "Ralph!" he called out to his friend, giving his head a shake, his lips spreading into a smile. "What are you doing? I didn't expect anyone to be down here." He started to move over to the puff, his dark eyes passing over all the sweets before him. "Wow! The house elves do all this for you?"

Ralph danced without a care in the world while Basil looked on; all the while nibbling on his own midnight snack. It was only when someone called his name did the Hufflepuff resumed his routine shyness. Caught red handed, he turned slowly. The voice had been familiar, but in his panic, it could have been a complete stranger! Ralph faced the newcomer, and it was obvious how relieved he was to see Ryder. "What am I doing," he repeated the question. "What are you doing here? You almost gave me a heart attack." He placed his hand on his chest for emphasis. Hopping down onto the ground, he gave an exaggerated huff. He plopped down on the bench as Ryder examined the spread. "Yeah, the house elves and I get along quite well. They always make me nice snacks when I can't sleep." He picked up a biscuit. "I'll forgive your trespassing into my kingdom this time. I am a generous king, and shall allow you to partake in my feast." He chuckled at his own silliness. "I'm guessing you couldn't sleep either," he asked.

If he was going to run into anyone in the kitchens tonight, Ryder was glad it was Ralph. The boy's face brightened at seeing his friend, knowing that the weight on his chest would ease in his company. "I didn't mean to," he defended himself with a laugh. "You were a little too busy to notice me come in." His lips spread into a wide smile, one that showed all his teeth. Ryder had never interacted with the house elves before, but he thought it was real cool that they'd do all of this for a student. He had just expected to raid the kitchen until he found the things he needed. James Bradley never tolerated house elves for some reason, so he had never been around them until he got to Hogwarts. And even then, he didn't really ever see them. Ryder bowed dramatically at Ralph when he said he'd forgive his trespassing. "My kind, benevolent king," he exclaimed, rising to grin at him. His friend asked if he couldn't sleep either and Ryder's smile faded, his gaze falling to the treats in front of him. His hand reached for a biscuit. "Yeah," was all he said about it. He didn't want to burden his friend with something so heavy. "Long live King Sagewater!" he cried out as he raised the biscuit in toast before bringing it to his lips to take a bite. His smile returned as he chewed. "Why couldn't you sleep?" he asked, taking another bite out of the biscuit.

Ralph grinned. "I was practicing my killer dance moves." He tapped the table and Basil came scurrying over. The rat was now clinging to a piece of cheese. He climbed up Ralph's shoulder and rested in the crevice between Ralph's neck and shoulder. Ralphie was always so proud to have Basil at his side. The little rat was super smart and well behaved. He was all laughs as Ryder bowed. He liked when his friends got on board with his shenanigans. Hogwarts was filled with plenty of fun stuff like learning magic, but there was plenty of boring stuff like homework and exams. It was always nice to forget the boring stuff for a while. The Hufflepuff watched the light fade from his friend, and he wondered if he'd said the wrong thing. He'd only asked if he couldn't sleep. He rubbed his hands nervously on his pant leg. Then just like that, the Slytherin was cheering to the king, and Ralph's worried disappeared. "I don't know," he answered. "I'm just full of energy I guess." He paused, taking a moment to look around as if he expected someone to be hiding in the shadows. "If you really want to know, I found a new secret passageway. I'm going to take a peek after classes," he said with that same excited grin. "There's bound to be something worth checking out at the end of the tunnel."

Ryder was very familiar with Basil, seeing as he was often hanging out with Ralph and the rat was always hanging around him, too. The young snake was perhaps a little envious of the bond between the two of them. His relationship with his owl, Finn, was a close one, but he hardly got to see the bird unless he made the trek up to the Owlery. Having your common room be underwater really put a damper on having your owl nearby. Maybe he should have gotten a cat like Lydia.
He continued to snack on the biscuit as the puff explained he was just full of energy. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. He wished that's the reason he was awake right now. At the mention of a new secret in the castle, Ryder's eyes widened with excitement and his brows started to raise, chewing up the rest of the biscuit he just shoved in his mouth. Ryder swallowed and grinned. "That's awesome! We have to check it out! Do you want to invite Liny?" With the whole gang together they could make it a proper adventure! He was bouncing on his heels, anticipation brimming under his skin. "Where is it? How did you find it?"

Ralph was grinning ear to ear as he watched the excitement blossom on the Slytherin's face. This was why they were friends. Anyone who was down for a good adventure was okay in Ralph's book. He remembered listening to Liam tell stories about the different houses as a kid. One of his concerns was whether he'd get along with people outside of his assigned House. All of Liam's friends were Ravenclaws, so he'd had certain expectations. None of that mattered once he was actually at Hogwarts. He had friends all over. He had Ryder who was a Slytherin. Aisling who was a Ravenclaw. Martha who was a Hufflepuff like himself. He wasn't limited by house boundaries and rivalries. Hogwarts was just as great as the day he'd arrived. "One hundred percent!" He then nodded. "Of course, we have to invite Liny. She'll be disappointed if we left her out." Liny was the bravest girl he knew, and a little crazy if you asked him. He still remembered their encounter with the fairies in the Forbidden Forest. "It's on the second floor," he told the other boy. "I was meeting up with Liam to get my snacks, and after he left I sort of just hung out because I had nothing to do." Ralph shrugged. "Anyway, Basil was sniffing around at the end of the hall. I tried calling him over, but he wouldn't listen, so I went to check it out. One of the stones was loose. I pulled it, but it wouldn't budge, but then I pushed it!" He was leaning forward. "Hidden tunnel!"

For the most part, Ryder found his friends in the other houses at Hogwarts. He got along with most of his dorm and housemates, but he wasn't particularly close with any of them. It was mainly just Ralph and Liny. That was fine by Ryder; he didn't care all that much about his house. Like, okay, sure he had pride being a Slytherin, but it wasn't that deep for him. His lips spread into a huge grin when he said they'd of course be inviting Liny. Adventures just weren't the same when the three of them weren't together. The young snake took a seat on the bench and listened intently as he told him about finding the passage, his eyes widening with excitement. "Dude, that is soo awesome!" They were only in their second year. Ryder was feeling the anticipation surging through his veins at the thought of all the secrets they'd uncover before they were through with school. "I wonder where it leads. Probably somewhere super cool!" He was bouncing in his seat at just the thought of exploring it. "When were you thinking of exploring it?" Tomorrow? Tomorrow would be cool.
