Character History:
Raheem and Ra’d Zaman, a pair of magical brothers, grew up in the small Egyptian oasis of Cara. Less than 500 people called the oasis home, it also housed the second most Egyptian wizard and witches in any one city.
Growing up Ra’d was excited to study at Uagadou, right up until he started going to school at Uagadou. As a kid Ra’d thought that being the son of a magizoologist was cool, being the son of Torben Zaman, the crazy man who thought Werewolves should have rights was not cool. It didn’t help that in Ra’d’s second year his father petitioned for the Sphinx to be considered a being and not a creature.
Raheem began meeting every insult to his father with a fist. Ra'd, though, was smaller and faster and smarter than his brother. While Raheem knocked the teeth out of one or two guys Ra’d learned to duck and weave through fights and cleaned up his brother’s messes by taking people out while they were distracted. The two brothers always had each other's backs, but this often left Ra’d feeling as though he had to clean up his brother’s messes.
When it came time for Ra’d to try out for the school’s quidditch team he came up with an amazing plan to stand out. He convinced his friends to release 4 extra bludgers, and stole the snitch before anyone could stop him. Ra’d found that dodging a bludger was much easier than a fist and in his fifth year Ra’d made history. In one season he stole the snitch more than anyone else had in the history of Uagadou.
During his sixth year Ra’d received a letter that his father had gone missing. Part of Ra’d wanted to stay close to his family, but, after graduation, Ra’d had made the National Quidditch team for Egypt as a seeker. He enjoyed travelling across the world playing quidditch, during the off seasons Ra’d would even help out his brother by delivering large shipments of potions to witches and wizards in villages surrounding their hometown.
It was years after his disappearance when Rahaam learned that their father had been eaten by a Sphinx while he’d been trying to prove that Shinx were miscatagorized and should've been considered Beings not Beasts. A fact that Rahaam neglected to tell Ra’d about their father’s fate until Ra’d came home for his older brother’s wedding.
The two brothers got into a huge fight, Ra’d was devastated that Rahaam waited so long to tell him about their brother. Over the years Ra’d cooled off enough to return home from time to time, though he was never very close to his brother again. Which turned out to be a mistake when his brother told him about his own ‘daughter’, something Ra’d knew was impossible given the fact that he was a deeply closeted gay man who’d never even kissed a woman.
Needing to put as much space as possible between himself and his brother Ra’d quit quidditch and decided to travel, he went to the Middle East studying magical creatures, history, and a little bit astronomy. Over the next few years Ra’d travelled north, visiting Greece, Bulgaria, Moldova, even going as far as England to see an old friend. He learned a lot, including muggle philosophy which sparked deep introspection. He thought about bigotry, his father, and more importantly he thought about legacy.
Eventually Ra’d took a job in England where he defended the rights of magical creatures and beasts. Oddly Ra’d found he liked England, they had some good Quidditch teams, even if he found their treatment of werewolves to be disappointing at times. Seeing such cruelty Ra'd began to move away from research to become a creature Rights Advocate.
Part of Ra’d would’ve been happy never seeing his brother again, but he kept getting letters from Rahaam, most of which he burnt upon receiving. Then he made the mistake of being a little too curious and read about a letter from his brother about how Ra’d ‘had to come pick up his daughter before she was surrendered to an orphanage’. That sparked another argument, a trip to Egypt, three more arguments, and a fist fight.
Ra’d won, because Rahaam never bothered to stay in shape.
In the end Ra’d returned home to Egypt with a ten year old Lina, who was legally his daughter, because his brother thought it was a good idea to lie on her birth certificate to hide his own infidelity.
The hardest thing Ra’d ever had to do, was sit a young Lina down and explain the truth to her. He felt it was necessary, Ra’d didn’t want to lie to her for the rest of her life, and nor did he want her learning the truth years later and feeling betrayed by him. So he came clean, and very quickly had to learn how to be a father despite having no prior desire to do so.
Going from being single and alone to living with a ten year old daughter was a big adjustment for Ra'd. But looking back in retrospect he felt that the chance was good for him. It gave him a reason to stay in any city longer than he had lived anywhere since quitting quidditch.
Having committed to living in England he committed more time and energy to his work as a Creature Advocate, a lot of his work involved the treatment of werewolves and those afflicted with lycanthropy. He even became a consultant with the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures: Beast Division, mostly working with the Werewolf Registry, and Centaur Liaison Office.
