With the warm weather washing over the Scottish highlands over the last few weeks, the common room in Ravenclaw tower was practically empty. This was how Michael preferred it. During the winter months, it had been crowded with students chatting or playing games. It made it difficult for him to relax or study so he'd spend all his time in the library until curfew was upon him. But not lately.
It was a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon when Michael arrived at the tower, his stomach filled with good food. He answered the doors riddle easily and stepped inside, his caramel eyes sweeping over the room. There were some third years sitting by the window, all of them reading the same fictional book. Michael recognized it as the only book that he ever saw his sister read. It wasn't his favorite book, but he could see the appeal a Quidditch romance had to young witches. His eyes continued their scan of the room, falling to rest on a familiar head of dark hair. An easy smile fell upon his features as he started walking in the wizard's direction. Liam was sitting at a table instead of being cuddled up with Bella. Michael was glad; it seemed like all of his dorm mates were entering some kind of relationship and he missed their company. "Hey," he said as he neared, patting him on the shoulder before sliding in the seat beside him. "What are you doing?"

Alas, he'd been separated from his favorite person, as Laurie had detached herself from Nate long enough to steal Bella away. It was a devastating blow, to say the least, but he had other ways to fill his time. Homework was always one of them, seeing as though he was a studious boy. Then again, he was studious enough to not let his relationship with Bella interfere with his schoolwork. Kudos to him for dating someone who had the same mindset. His next option was to find Ralph, but his little brother had run off with a few kids his age to enjoy the weather. His options were becoming limited by the second. He took a spare moment to write his parents and then proceeded to play chess by himself. He was comfortable where he sat, and to be honest, the idea of traveling down the stairs just didn't sound appealing.
He was halfway through the match when someone spoke to him. He looked up and saw Michael. "Hey mate," he greeted. "Just mulling over my next move," he responded with amusement. He'd have to catch a chess club meeting here soon. If everyone hadn't been super involved in being outside, he'd have taken the opportunity to play ages ago. "Finally escaped the library," he asked with a smile. "What are you up to?"

Michael's bright eyes looked over the chessboard, taking in the positions of each piece. He liked Wizard's Chess pretty well; it was equal parts stimulating and relaxing. "I'd move your bishop to C6," he said casually, leaning back in his seat with his arm resting on the table. Michael let out an amused huff at his question and lightly shrugged his shoulders. "Change of scenery," he offered with a small smile. The views from Ravenclaw tower were some of the best, but if he really wanted to take in a view he'd go to the Astronomy tower. Liam asked what he was up to and Michael raised his brows and let out a heavy breath of air. "No clue, honestly. Figured I'd just sit by a window, read something." He looked over his friend, his eyebrow quirking upwards. "I would have expected to see you with Bella," he said. Romance wasn't something that Michael ever really considered until recently. He watched his sister go through relationships and he didn't really care for any of the guys she dated. But it all seemed so arbitrary to him - he'd much prefer to put that effort into his studies. He was happy for his friends, however, even if he didn't quite understand it.

Liam wasn't the type to be concerned with what others thought about his habits. He could play chess by himself all day, and never once think it was strange or out of the ordinary. He believed in living one's life to the fullest. For him, living such a life meant partaking in activities such as Chess, studying history, observing the stars with Bella, and debating politics. What was the point of existing if not to enjoy every moment of this brief thing they called life? Liam nodded approvingly as Michael suggested his next move. "Ah, you're right. I was considering my knight, but the bishop holds the better play." He gave his friend a curious look, a smile plastered on his face. "Most people have vacated the premises to enjoy the sun. The courtyard has been crowded for days." The warmer weather lifted moods. Liam could appreciate that. He could also appreciate the stars no longer being covered in snow clouds for weeks on end. "Then again, you're not most people, are you?" He turned his head away to hide the rush of color that often came to his face at the mere thought of his girlfriend. "Laurie came and stole her away," he chuckled. "I guess it's not a bad thing. I get to hang out with you, and maybe now we'll be graced with Nate's presence." He abandoned the chessboard for a moment. "How've you been? Learn anything interesting while you were down in the library?"

"No, I'm not," he replied with a small smirk, his fingers drumming against the wooden table. Crowded areas were not Michael's favorite by any means, not when people were conjuring things for fun or playing ball or some other game, coming and going with so much chaos. He supposed it would be good for him to get out of his comfort zone every now and then - he just wasn't the kind of wizard to put himself out there like that. Michael liked the warm weather, but the intermittent bouts of heavy rain made lounging on the grounds a little difficult.
Color rose to his friend's face when he brought up his girlfriend and Michael was amused by it, his lips twitching upwards into a smile. He mentioned that Laurie stole her away and he nodded solemnly. Laurie and Bella used to be joined at the hip until Laurie started hanging out with Nathaniel and Bella started hanging out with Liam. He hadn't really seen much of either of his dorm mates since then, but he was glad that the girls were getting some quality time, leaving room for him to finally see his friends. Liam mentioned Nate and Michael scoffed. "Not likely. He's probably out riding his broom."
Liam asked how he's been, wanting to know if he found anything interesting at the library. Michael's head started bobbing a little as he spoke, his shoulders shrugging nonchalantly. "I've been good," he said. Which was a true statement, but there had been something that had been weighing heavily on his mind for the past few months that he couldn't quite shake. But Michael didn't want to talk about it and he knew that Liam didn't need to hear it. "Found a few grimoires that seem interesting in the Forbidden Section, but I haven't gotten very far into them." His honeyed eyes lifted from the table to look him in the eye. "What about you? How's the whole boyfriend gig?"

Liam wasn't going to tell Michael that he should get out more, or something pushy like that. He respected his friend's decision to stick to smaller groups. Crowds could be chaotic and loud. Some people enjoyed silence; Liam was one of them. Liam tilted his head thoughtfully when Michael mentioned Nate taking to the skies in favor of hanging out with them. It was a fair assumption. Liam wasn't into Quidditch, he thought the sport far too violent for his liking. Call him lame, but he saw zero appeal in dodging a metal ball speeding toward you at ungodly speeds. He'd seem some beaters who swung their bats as if their lives depended on it, aiming to purposely cripple their opponent. It was a hard pass for him. Liam preferred books and astronomy and chess. He supposed that was a stereotypical Ravenclaw thing, but at least he was happy as things were now. "Well, it's a good day for riding. Can't say I blame him."
Michael confirmed that he'd been well. That was always good to hear. The mention of grimoires in the Forbidden Section had him looking curious. "Someone's been exploring," he mused. "Come on, what'd you find," he asked. Surely there was something to be shared. Liam didn't venture to that part of the library, but he would admit he was always curious about what secrets were held within. He rubbed the back of his head when the conversation was turned back to his relationship with Bella. He was blushing all over again. He couldn't help it! "I uh, I think it's going well. Bella seems happy," her late mother's items being stolen aside. "We spend a lot of time together, and it's new, but nice." He looked at the table as if it were suddenly the most interesting thing in the world. "I'm good though. You know, just keeping up with my studies and trying to divide my time."

Michael didn't care for Quidditch either. He was decent enough on a broom to play, but it was his sister that got all the talent. That was fine by him. He'd much prefer to stick to his potions and his runes. Nate was a good Beater, but he was too hotheaded and sure of himself. Not that it mattered all that much to Michael. He didn't think that his dorm mate wanted to go professional so it probably didn't matter to him either. The young wizard nodded his head in agreeance to his friend's words. It certainly was a good day for riding. Michael may not like the sport, but he did enjoy a nice broom ride every now and then.
The corners of his lips turned upwards into a smile at Liam's curiosity. Whenever Michael took a book out of the restricted section, there was always the chance of there being some dark or forbidden magic in them. He didn't care for that so he just ignored it, but typically in the pages of the grimoires there were a few spells and potions to learn. The boy was always looking for new opportunities to learn things. "I picked up the grimoire of Dragan Popescu, some Romanian wizard from the 1300s, and the journals of one of my ancestors, Fiorenza Moretti, in runes," he said with some excitement in his voice. There was a sparkle of it in his hazel eyes. "I can show you if you want. I haven't learned anything useful just yet, but like I said I haven't gotten very far into them." If Liam asked him too, he'd summon them from their dorm room. Maybe with both of them looking, they'd cover more ground.
Despite him not really understanding the whole relationship thing, he still cared about his friends and it made him happy to see them happy. He listened to Liam talk about Bella, noting the color in his friend's cheeks, nodding his head along. He felt some relief when he didn't continue to talk about it, but instead told him how he was doing. Michael smiled. "That's good," he said. "Glad it's going well." He didn't see himself getting into a relationship. At least, not anytime soon. He had a lot going on and there wasn't really a person he would want to do it with. Michael didn't feel like disrupting his routine at the moment, not when it was the only thing keeping him going. "Have you given any thought to what you'd like to take to NEWT level?"
