Overall Personality
Asher is driven. He believes there is nothing that can't be overcome with patience, perseverance, dedication, and a healthy dose of calculation. Many people are intimidated by his competence and no nonsense approach. He doesn't think its his job to be less intimidating. People can just do better.
Raised in a prominent Greek Pureblood magical line, he believes there is a reason magic can be traced through families and it's not as simple as blood. He thinks that's an archaic thought. He's of the opinion that magic is genetic and that's all the more reason to encourage magical people to marry other magical people. Asher won't go so far as to say a Pureblood shouldn't get together with a muggleborn witch or wizard if that's what they want in life, but it's at the cost of carrying on their magical legacy, which he views as irresponsible.
Asher believes that the reason why one works hard is so that they can have nice things. Luxury isn't something he's ashamed of or something he denies himself.
Family History
Persephone's magical lineage could be traced back to the Hellenistic period. She was proud of the rich magical family tree that was painstakingly maintained by magical historians. She liked that she was recognized in magical locations. The matriarch of the family, Persephone was entrusted with a significant family fortune she's used to preserve antiquities. She knew from a very young age that she was meant to marry a pureblood of only a few families. An entire industry existed to match witches and wizards dedicated to preserving the bloodline while still ensuring genetic diversity limited complications. Persephone didn't mind. She didn't think marrying for posterity less than marrying for love. Love was temporary. A legacy was forever.
Nico was groomed from a young age to pursue a life in politics. A Sideris had held a political office all the way back to the Ottoman Empire and he was destined to carry on the tradition. After completing his education at Beauxbatons, Nico moved to London to work with the ICW. He knew his best asset in the future would be a vast network of influential witches and wizards. While living in the UK he was approached by a matchmaker to consider Persephone for marriage. She was the right pedigree and had deep connections to the right families. There was no reason to think twice. The couple was married in 1985. They had their first child in 1986. Orion was perfect and the Sideris' marshalled every resource to ensure his life was enriched. No expense was spared. The efforts to raise Orion was nearly a fulltime job for several people. Persephone split her time between managing the tutors and au pair and running her charitable foundations.
Ophelia was also planned and benefitted from the infrastructure the family had in place to raise the cultured children. The only real question was which school was good enough for their kids. They knew there was still unrest in England following Voldemort's fall. They thought the reaction against pureblood supremacy may be waning in the intervening years and decided their kids would go to Hogwarts unless something changed before Orion was of age.
When Persephone found out she was pregnant again, well that was a surprise. They had their one boy and one girl. Orion was away at his boarding school and Ophelia was fiercely independent and preferred his tutors over clinging to his parents. Deciding to make the best of it, the Sideris prepared for their third child.
Character History (early years)
Asher, from day one, lived in no one's shadow. He arrived two weeks early, walked early, talked early... as if he sensed he was going to be compared to his siblings at every turn. As soon as he could read, he didn't bother with fairytales. He wanted to know real things that happened to real people. By the time he turned seven both Orion and Ophelia were off to Hogwarts and he had the complete attention of the staff his parents had hired. The two people whose attention he didn't have were Persephone and Nico. They were working to rehab their image. They hadn't joined the Death Eaters but they had provided financial support. His dad was a lawyer at the ICW and argued the Death Eaters deserved barristers at their tribunal and they needed to be from the ICW not a biased ministry of magic. It sealed his fate in England. He was labeled a sympathizer. When Asher got his letter to Hogwarts, his parents were already making arrangements to move back to Greece, his dad was eyeing political office back home.
Character History (School/Training Years)
Ordinarily Asher wouldn't have cared what house he was sorted into. It seemed a small minded way to segregate students. He also knew her last name would be noticed. Orion told him about the harassment he experienced during the tribunal. Their dad making several front page editions of the Daily Prophet. Ophelia had also gotten bullied in her early years. Being a Ravenclaw may have helped her strike out from her family notoriety. As Asher waited for the hat to make its choice he wanted it to say Ravenclaw. Or even Gryffindor. The hat would acknowledge he had characteristics that would sort him there, but kept coming back to Slytherin. He didn't protest when told him its final decision before announcing it, as if it was waiting for him to convince it differently. He wasn't going to argue with a hat about something that shouldn't matter. He was welcomed to the sea of green. In his first year he learned there were three types of Slytherin: those who were actively trying to rehabilitate the house's reputation, those who thought apologizing for their past house members was beneath the house, and those who were worried what their sorting meant about them, thinking they could become a dark wizard simply by the sorting. Asher didn't have time for any of the politics. That wasn't his realm, that was his dad and Orion's.
The summer after his first year was miserable. Greece wasn't home. He might have been born in Cyprus, he grew up in England. There was no where for him to go in England, he didn't have a choice. At least his parents seemed as happy as it was possible for them since leaving behind the constant harassment. His mother in particular was pleased to be back in her old social circles. She tried to pull Asher in to the fundraisers and brunches. They were awful. The only good thing about it all was that the Greek Ministry of Magic didn't have a law restricting underage magic. He was free to cast whatever spells he wanted.
By his third year, Asher found a small group of housemates he liked. Mostly because they each brought something different to the circle. Asher was skilled at Transfigurations and would help with homework and practice. It started as a study group but became a small cohesive click that didn't welcome outsiders. For the first time in his life, Asher felt a sense of belonging and enjoyed the fact that it was an exclusive group. When the term came to an end, one of his friends, Sebastian, invited him to stay with their family instead of traveling back to Greece and Asher jumped at the chance. It was the best summer of his entire life. It was spent traveling abroad gaining new experiences and meeting new people with the same philosophies. Through those travels he met Luca and Rayna Ivanova, who were family friends with Sebastian's family.
The time spent traveling was exactly what he wanted to be doing with his life. Leaving behind his family and their self absorbed life, working internationally. His ambitions were focused on the ICW and a life of freedom. Starting his fifth year, Asher was ready for a year of studying for his exams. Getting the marks he needed to progress to the N.E.W.T.s classes he needed was second only to staying in touch with Luca. The pair sent owls to each other at least once a week and even tried to coordinate some visit over the summer. Asher made it a point to know what every job at the ICW required and he made sure to limit his energy there.
He got the Es and Os in the subjects he needed. Everything else was meaningless. To his surprise this was an opinion that was reinforced by Luca's mother of all people. Asher managed a trip to Romania. Rayna Ivanova was everything Asher thought pureblood witches should be. Confident, assertive, unashamed, and cunning. She was perfect, and Asher wished she was his mother.
By Asher's seventh year he was more than ready to be on his own in the world.
Character History (adult years)
Asher took the summer to travel and gather up all the things he cared about in Greece. His parents were interested in his plans only to learn how his position might benefit them. He made it clear the only way he would use his job to help them was if it helped him. They seemed to accept those terms.
A legal aid position was open when he was ready to apply. Deciding to try his hand at law despite his dad's spectacularly disastrous practice, he was assigned as a legal aid in the London offices and started his studies to pass the legal exams in the future. There was no rush. Experience was more important than books.
When, Rayna moved to London Asher was all in. Asher and Luca had kept in touch, he was the brother Asher wished he had. Rayna's move didn't just mean he'd spend time with his best friend, he was hoping to learn from Rayna. The older witch was the mentor he always wished for. It started with Asher giving Rayna a heads up when an case was looking in her direction. He got reports from both the ICW and the Ministry, mostly for annotating and filing. He was a no body, it was the perfect cover. Asher decided she had no real interest in actually pursuing a legal career. Running a syndicate one day... well that was power. Rayna would help him get there.
It's come to his attention that a rival group has been crossing paths into Rayna's territory. Asher has made it a goal to find out what Lawrence Gable was up to and is ready to defend one of the most important people in his life.
