Rufio's Detention Mixtape Track 1
To tell you the truth, Rufio still wasn’t totally certain what he had been given detention for. If he had to guess it was a punishment for Hufflepuff’s recent loss to Gryffindor. Rufio’s refusal to join the Hufflepuff team had sent waves through the Quidditch world, and his fellow teammates were feeling the aftershocks. Would Rufio put it past his mom to pull some strings with Professor Chandler to make things as uncomfortable as possible for him until he came to his senses and picked up a broom? It seemed that she was capable of anything these days.
But the joke was on all of them! For Rufio, detention was a new and exciting opportunity. Five disparate misfits locked in a study hall for an entire Saturday morning, locking heads before discovering that they’re not all that different after all. Could detention be more romantic?
Rufio was the first to arrive, much to the delight of Professor Quintana who had detention duty that morning. He had prepared an activity for the kids to discuss their heroes—the hope being that in making the students analyze the people they most looked up to, they might glean some idea of what career they wanted to pursue in the future. Example: Tony Hawk. Tony Hawk rides skateboards. Skateboards are objects. Objects are affected by the law of gravity. Therefore: you may be interested in pursuing a degree in physics.
As a professor in the Muggle Studies department, Professor Quintana’s activities rarely lined up with the ambitions of his very magical students.
Kathy Domergue arrived next, her thick, unbrushed hair falling over her eyes like a mop. Rufio recognized her from long, knit sweater that nearly fell down to her knees. She sat down next to Rufio he offered her an energetic, “Hi!”
Ivy Lennox followed in after Kathy, looking absolutely radiant for the setting. Rufio had had a crush on Ivy since he’d spotted her at the Slytherin table his first year. This was the closest he’d ever come to sharing a room with her. She took her seat as far away from everyone else as possible.
Jeff Champion arrived in his Gryffindor letterman jacket, giving Professor Quintana an amped up high five before sitting down in the front of the classroom. “Little dude!” Jeff greeted Rufio with a Sam Spade smile and a thumbs up. “Hufflepuff sure missed you on Wednesday!"
Last to arrive was Alistair Crump in his acid wash jeans and leather jacket. He shuffled dramatically through the door, his Chucks scraping over the stone floor until he reached his desk at the end of a row. As he plopped down, Rufio saw the self-stenciled lettering on the back of Alistair’s jacket which read, “SATAN RULEZ.”
“Well,” Professor Quintana cleared his voice, glancing judgmentally over his spectacles at Alistair. “Now that everyone’s here, I have a fun activity for us to do today.” He leafed through a stack of parchment, moving through the rows of desk to place one sheet flat down before the students.
Rufio sat up in anticipation, then turned to see Ivy looking dreadful, but still fabulous, in her corner. “First time?” he smiled.

Ivy had no idea what she’d done to get detention!
That’s what she would claim when her father wrote to her once he found out she was spending another Saturday locked up. This was the third time this semester and she was close to not only being benched from the team but losing her allowance. And all for what? Because someone kept instigating arguments with her in the middle of class? And of course she was nowhere to be seen this morning as Ivy strolled in after Kathy Domergue. Ivy quickly found the seat farthest from Professor Quintana, Kathy’s frizzy hair, and thankfully from Jeff who decided to sit front and center. The last one to come in was Alistair. He made a show of dragging himself to the back of the row, making sure everyone saw that dumb leather jacket he wore at all times.
As Professor Quinta started to pass out papers, Ivy crossed her arms over her chest and looked forward with a small frown on her lips. Why was he always doing too much? Other professors would let them sit in silence, seething over their lost weekend or contemplating the wrong choices they had made to land in detention on a sunny day like today. Professor Tannen would accept compliments for get out of jail free cards. But no, Quintana had activities planned for them.
Ivy was looking down at the parchment placed in front of her when she heard Rufio Gable speaking to her. What was he staring at? She crossed her legs then raised her eyebrows at him as if to ask ‘what?’ but just to make sure he knew that she didn’t appreciate the glances he had stolen when she walked in she scoffed at him and said, “Are you serious? Look at you sitting up straight and ready to go, you’ve clearly never been here before. Are you lost? Or are you punishing yourself for screwing over your own team?”

Rufio's Detention Mixtape Track 1 Track 2
“Today I want to consider heroes,” Professor Quintana said as he returned to the lectern. He did a little gesture with his hands as if he were flying around with a small laugh to accompany it. “No, I’m not talking about strong men in capes. I mean the people who inspire you.”
Professor Quintana studied the room now: Jeff, lazing casually in his chair with his arm hung over the back as if he was physically spilling out of his seat. Kathy dozing off next to attentive Rufio. Alistair snapping bubble gum as loudly as he could. Ivy with her arms crossed giving him her deadliest stare.
“I get it’s not ‘cool’ to care,” he continued. “But one day soon you’re all going to find yourselves in the world outside and if you don’t start looking inward, you’ll land in some employment office pursuing dead end jobs. So, rap with me, dudes. Who are some of your heroes?” Professor Quintana looked pleasantly surprised when Alistair volunteered his hand first. “Yes, Mr. Crump?”
“Beelzebub,” Alistair said with a mischievous little smile.
“Okay…” Professor Quintana sighed. “Let me tell you about my hero.” He came back around the lectern and grabbed a chair, spinning it around so that he could sit backward on it. “He’s this Muggle bloke who was spitting rhymes four hundred years before Kendrick. You know what his name was? William Shakespeare.” Professor Quintana paused to let that one sink in.
Rufio sank a bit in his seat, trying to look more casual after Ivy’s comment. Had he obsessed over her for five years? Maybe. But Rufio had always been too shy to approach her, too busy with training to approach any girl, really. Now with a schedule full of nothing, he was suddenly desperate to impress her.
“I have my detention slip if you want to see it,” he said quietly to Ivy as Professor Quintana started reading from Shakespeare’s twentieth sonnet to Jeff’s encouragement (“Right on, Mr. Q!”).
“What landed you here?” Rufio asked her casually.

Ivy was horrified when Professor Quintana’s high-pitch voice started reciting Shakespeare back to them in this rhythm that was probably supposed to be rapping but his voice was so unpolished and rough that Ivy couldn’t stand to listen to it. She sank into the hard chair and let the frown deepen. Jeff, on the other hand, was vibing with Professor Quintana. His head and shoulders bobbed along with the words. Kathy’s head popped up with curiosity from where it had rested on her folded arms on top of her desk.
Suddenly a whispered conversation with Rufio didn’t seem so bad. Anything to distract from the tapping Jeff had started on his desk to accompany the rap. Ivy leaned across the small space between their desks.
“I set a girl’s hair on fire,” Ivy straight up lied to him. Her eyes stared back at him for a second before she glanced up at his hair and a small smile played on her lips. “She had hair like yours. Real curly and shiny. It makes me want to do it all over again.”

Rufio's Detention Mixtape Track 1 Track 2 Track 3
It was a little surprising to Rufio to even find Jeff in detention. He was everyone’s hype man, whether it was knocking players off of their brooms so Gryffindor’s chasers could score goals, or being every professor’s favorite student. Even in punishment he seemed to be having a good time.
Alistair, on the other hand, looked like he was being tortured. He rolled his head around in wide, dramatic circles as Jeff began to beat box.
Rufio was losing track in the performance in Ivy’s unreal face. Even as she admitted to setting another girl on fire, Rufio thought she looked stunning. Was this how it happened? Confined in a room together, their icy first interactions would warm until they began to connect and realize that they weren’t all that different? That was probably Professor Quintana’s hope in his little assignment, and admiring Ivy’s cruel smile was making Rufio hope for it too.
“Sure,” he said. It wouldn’t be the first time his hair had been set on fire. “My sister used to set my hair on fire all the time. It was actually big problem when she got her wand. That’s pretty cool, though. Way cooler than me. I’m a political prisoner.”

Before today, Ivy had not given Rufio a second thought, but she knew exactly who he was for a few reasons. He was an exceptional Quidditch player. Not just good at his position as Keeper, he seemed to be able to take on any role his team needed. And the second reason, the reason why she figured he was so good at what he did on the pitch, was the simple fact that he had Quinn blood running through his veins. So he had to be good at Quidditch. Her gaze trailed down his face and she noted his bone structure. Another benefit of the Quinn name.
“I always knew your sister was a psycho,” she said leaning back in her seat just as Professor Quintana stood up and picked up speed in his performance for the captive audience of the two students who were actually looking at him. He seemed to thrive on the attention.
Ivy pointed her quill at Rufio and said, “You know, I’m pretty sure she tried to bribe me once. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s the one who called Professor Chandler over when I was fighting that awful, trashy redhead just because I didn't go along with her plan.”

Rufio's Detention Mixtape Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4
Rufio hadn’t stopped thinking about Ivy since his first night at Hogwarts. He had taken his seat on the stool to be sorted. The only thing going through his mind in that moment was Gryffindor, Gryffindor, Gryffindor, remembering how disappointing it had been for his parents when Claire was sorted into Ravenclaw. But then he opened his eyes for one second just as the Headmistress lowered the shitty old hat over his head and he locked eyes with her. The blonde bombshell was reaching across the Slytherin table to collect a spoonful of magic mashed potatoes for her plate.
“What about Gryffindor?” the sorting hat whispered. “Huh?” Rufio replied, completely awestruck by the stunning vixen who was now stabbing her fork into the arm of a Slytherin boy. “For a second you were all ‘Gryffindor, Gryffindor, Gryffindor,’ but now there’s nothing here. Oh well, if it’s not that important to you…”
“Hufflepuff!”
Back at the front of the detention hall Professor Quintana had finished his rap to Jeff’s thunderous applause. He’d shifted the focus on the students now and had dragged his chair over to Alistair who Professor Q had clearly singled out as his project.
“Why do you see he’s your hero though?” he asked Alistair.
“Because,” Alistair shrugged. “Satan rules, dude.”
“That’s not surprising at all,” Rufio whispered back to Ivy when she spoke about Claire. “My sister thinks that everyone can be bought, but I think people are more complicated than that.” He wouldn’t go so far as to call his sister a psycho, but he did wonder sometimes where she got the criminal gene from. As cruel as his mom was, it was important to her that her children understood the value of hard work. And his father? Probably the most honest man in Muggle Great Britain. Everyone loved Rufio’s dad, that’s why he was such a successful businessman.
“Anyway, my mom says she’s a lost cause,” he shook his head. “Never knew life without money. Me? I plan on giving my share away. I want to build something like my father did, to succeed on my own merits.”

Professor Quintana was too preoccupied trying to reach into Alistair’s non-existent soul to notice the two kids in the back whispering to each other. Part of Ivy wished he would shush them and part of her hoped he didn’t notice them or else he would stage a therapy session right in front of everyone.
Rufio seemed to need one, actually, having a sister like Claire Gable. Everyone swore she was some sort of genius but was that really a compliment when you were setting kids on fire? Ivy had only joked about it, she would never actually do it. She did like the fear she saw in people’s eyes sometimes but that’s a story for another day. Today, it was about Rufio and his comment about his share of the Gable jackpot. Ivy wasn’t sure what his father actually did for a living but they were loaded. If it weren’t for Rufio’s mother, they would be shunned as nouveau riche by others.
“That’s so interesting,” she finally said after a full minute of just staring at him in silence. But it really wasn’t. Rufio was a good kid, everyone knew it, of course he would be determined to give it all back. Ivy was already at risk of losing her inheritance so she had to be cautious from now, saving whatever she had just in case her father decided she was too much of a troublemaker. She chewed on the inside of her cheek before she made a decision on the spot. She shifted in her seat so she could face him completely and she reached across the space between them to gently squeeze his arm. “It must have been hard growing up like that.”
It wasn’t a big deal. She was bored and willing to try something new. Then she saw Jeff looking back at them and she immediately pulled her hand back.

Rufio's Detention Mixtape Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5
Rufio was as surprised as anyone else in that room would have been from Ivy’s sudden kindness. Part of his attraction to her was how devastating she could be. Rufio had always believed that there was a softness hidden somewhere inside of her and he imagined finding it for himself, but he didn’t know that it would come so easily. Her hand felt warm on his shoulder and he felt the butterflies immediately, offering an innocent little smile back at her. He didn’t fully know what she meant when she said, “It must have been hard growing up like that,” but he sensed an opening with his unintentional vulnerability.
He was going to place his hand on top of hers, but it snapped away before he could. When he looked up he saw Jeff shooting him the double thumbs up and mouthing, “Nice.” Rufio blushed, but he turned back to Ivy and looking into her eyes all of his embarrassment melted away. Why should he be embarrassed to fall for the most gorgeous girl in school.
“My parents are getting a divorce,” he said. “I don’t know if they’re going to split the family up. My sister would probably go with my dad and I would go with mum, if I had to guess. I was her project, the ‘Quidditch prodigy.’ I really looked up to her…” He paused, trying to gauge Ivy’s reaction to his casual bit of trauma dumping. Was she into it? Was it going to get her to put her hand on his arm again?
Of course, Rufio hadn’t considered that her gentle touch had come just seconds after he’d mentioned his family’s money. Never having to want for anything also bred a certain level of naivety. Frankly, Rufio didn’t understand the levels of desperation that people were capable of when they were hurting for money. Why should he have been suspicious anyway? He knew that Ivy came from money too. That’s why they were perfect for each other, he thought.
His hands had absently begun to draw on the back of Mr. Quintana’s worksheet. He’d started by sketching the smooth curves of Ivy’s hair, and next moved inward to trace the outline of her face.

Rufio didn’t waste one second diving into his family drama. Ivy was a little taken aback by the sudden trauma dump and she sat in silence while she listened. His big, innocent eyes kept glancing at her, almost like he was gauging her reaction and Ivy managed to keep a sympathetic smile on her face. It was the least she could do.
I mean, this was just too easy. She had been worried about her future ever since her stepmother gave birth to her dad’s long awaited son and suddenly, this dumb rich boy was basically dropped into her lap. Someone was looking out for her in the great beyond. She had to think quickly, she wasn’t expecting any of this when she walked into detention, so she didn’t have a fully formed plan.
From what Rufio was saying, she gathered that he was desperate to feel the comfort that a complete family brought. She silently thanked Mr. And Mrs. Gable’s failed marriage for creating this needy, cute boy. Anyone could see that he was going to be easy to manipulate. He was perfect. And honestly, Ivy was doing him a favor. There were worse people out in the world and she was willing to teach him that hard lesson early on.
Ivy ignored whatever was going on in the front of the classroom and she leaned over his desk, her long blonde hair cascading over his shoulder as she did so. Then she asked, “what are you drawing?”

Rufio's Detention Mixtape Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5 Track 6
What exactly did Rufio know about Ivy? She was the hottest girl in school with an attitude to match her looks. She’d destroyed other boys, not unlike the stepsister that she loathed so much, and that gave her a reputation among the types of sad, sensitive kids that Rufio hung around. But he saw somebody different. Of course he didn’t know about her mother, but he could see beneath the confident surface of her eyes that there was something sadder and he was determined to get at it, to know the real Ivy. Wasn’t that the truth of all bad girls?
Maybe Ivy wouldn’t volunteer her past to Rufio, but he was definitely comfortable volunteering his. Rufio had never dealt with trauma in the way most people did. Rufio’s dad had lost his own father at a very young age, and his mother’s family had survived some wild incidents like his Aunt Anya being kidnapped, or Aunt Anya being framed for murder, or Aunt Anya being fake kidnapped when she was on the run while being framed for murder. You know, the more he thought about it, Aunt Anya had been through a lot. His own trauma was nothing in comparison: getting passed over in his first year for a position on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team because “you’re not Harry Potter, kid,” Claire setting his hair ablaze while practicing fire magic, and of course more recently, his parents’ separation. Rufio just felt like the world would be a better place if everyone was more open and honest about their own experiences, and of course he could use what he learned about other peoples’ lives in his own writing!
He hadn’t expected Ivy to lean in so close that he could smell her perfume. At first he thought about lying, but it was obvious what he was drawing. He slid the page over a bit so that she could see it better. “It’s just a rough sketch,” he said. “But I think I got your nose pretty good.”
