Bryant's knees were killing him. He'd been on the hard linoleum of the kitchen floor for an hour with his head under the sink, honestly causing more damage than he was fixing, all to the soothing song of Blossom fussing in the living room. Daisy stayed close to Bryant as he worked.
"What's that?" Daisy asked, pointing to Bryant's hand.
"This?" he asked, holding the strainer sleeve up for Daisy to get a good look at it. It was a small, circular metal piece that fit somewhere on the piping beneath the sink and now Bryant was fighting to put it all back together. "It's a nerfcrimper."
Daisy laughed. "That's not a real word!"
"Sure it is," Bryant insisted. In ten years as a professor at Hogwarts he had gotten really good at sounding like he knew what he was talking about.
"Can't you just use magic?" Daisy asked.
"Maybe," Bryant said. "But your mum keeps a natural household so," and of course there were no plumbers to call in the magic town.
As Bryant torqued his wrench around a washer, he realized that the house was surprisingly quiet. Abbey had finally managed to calm down her fussy six month old. He released a contented sigh, as the washer locked snugly around the pipe. "All done," he announced, sliding out from under the sink. He held his hands out as if to present the new and improved sink to Daisy, just in time for the piping to collapse in on itself in a loud chorus of metallic clanking.
In the living room Blossom began to cry again. Daisy just laughed, "Try again!" she smiled.

Usually Abbey would take care of any broken thing around her home but it was hard to say no to Bryant’s help when he refused to take no for an answer. She figured it was part trying to be a good friend and part wanting to spend time with the girls. Daisy absolutely adored him and she was always jumping with excitement when he came around. When Abbey tucked her in at night, Daisy would sigh and ask when Bryant would visit her next. Blossom was only six months old so she couldn’t voice her opinions if she had them but her wailing would stop whenever Bryant held her. He was surprisingly good with kids and animals. That says a lot about a person, Abbey often thought.
Blossom was extra fuzzy this evening, they were already past dinner time but Bryant had taken over the small kitchen while he worked. So Abbey tried her hardest to soothe her crying baby while Daisy and Bryant talked in the other room. Every once in a while, Daisy’s little laugh would filter into the living room and Abbey couldn’t help but smile. She had managed to get Blossom to settle down when the loud sound of metal crashing down startled her and the crying resumed.
Abbey held her close to her chest as she rushed to the kitchen. “What happened?” She asked in a panicked voice.

The patter of Abbey's feet scurrying toward the kitchen gave Bryant about five seconds to come up with a good excuse for the mess. He was hungry, so he knew Blossom would be too, and the constant crying wouldn't have Abbey in a good mood. Nah, this was nothing he hadn't managed before.
Bryant winked at Daisy. "Watch this," he said.
On his feet now, Bryant pressed the palm of his hand onto the edge of the sink where he leaned casually as Abbey entered the kitchen. Sweat rolled down Bryant's forehead and he wiped it on his Sonic the Hedgehog shirt which he'd likely owned since the mid-90s. Though Bryant was still thin, he'd filled out a bit since he and Abbey were in school. His old clothes fit snug over his body.
"What happened?"
"Nothing to worry about," Bryant waved. "Just a little hitch in the repair," he brought his hand down again onto the edge of the sink for emphasis, and the bowl collapsed down into the counter space below with a loud bang. "I think you're just gonna have to move."

This was going as well as she thought it would go. The basin collapsed down, Blossom kept crying, Daisy was giggling and Bryant gave her advice she didn’t need or want. And she still had to make dinner after all of this. She almost pulled her wand out, but Daisy was watching her and what was that teaching her daughter? That magic could fix all her problems? Abbey had committed herself to giving them the same upbringing her parents gave her and her sister. Magic was used only when it was absolutely necessary.
“Here,” she said, putting Blossom in his arms. She pulled out her phone and looked for the nearest take out place.
“Are we moving?” Daisy asked. She jumped up, her strawberry blonde curls bounced with her excitement, and she turned to Bryant. “A big house with room for you too.”
“We’re not moving,” Abbey replied. “Bryant wouldn’t be able to move with us if we did. He lives at the school and it would be hard for him to even visit us. Isn’t that right?” She looked to Bryant, urging him to agree with a look.

The old Bryant would have undermined Abbey. He would have sat at the table and propped little Daisy up on his knee and said something like, "But you can move into the castle with me. There are tons of bathrooms!" But this Bryant was mature and thoughtful. Instead he just smiled and said, "In a few years you'll start school and then you'll basically live in a big house with a room for me. There are tons of bathrooms!"
Bryant loved Abbey's kids like they were his own. Would he purposely sabotage her sink for an opportunity to spend time with Abbey and the kiddos? Probably. Am I saying that's what Bryant did? I'm not saying that's not what he did, you follow?
"But your mum's right," he said. "I've always got loads of school work to do and being a professor is basically like having forty kids of your own." He whispered "The little bastards." under his voice. Bryant raised his gaze from Daisy to Abbey, saw her struggling with her phone as Blossom squirmed in her arms, and he reached out to take the baby. Blossom settled down just as Bryant settled her down in the crook of his arm. "I can pay for dinner," he told Abbey with those sad, wistful eyes. "Whatever Daisy wants."
