Character History: Natalia Cappello was a beautiful Italian witch who just so happened to be a muggleborn. Her family was not happy about her new life, but they grudgingly provided for her while she attended Beauxbatons. At school, they were more accepting of her blood status and she became quite popular as the years went on. She had an affinity for Healing magic, Herbology, and Potions and within her first couple of years at Beauxbatons she desired to become a Healer. Despite her family’s reservations with her being a witch, Natalia found happiness through her magic and her friends at school. When she graduated, she took a job as a Healer at the local hospital and started to build her life from the ground up, having been cut off from her parents.
To celebrate her newfound freedom and employment, Natalia ventured to Rome for a night in the city. The evening of August 4th, 2003 she found herself at a classy bar a few blocks from the Colosseum. That was the night she would meet Sebastian Bakke. Sebastian was the youngest son of Christen Bakke. The Bakkes were a family of dark, pureblooded wizards who followed Grindelwald during his reign of terror, then Voldemort after him. Blood purity was of the utmost importance to the Bakke family. Sebastian had always been rebellious, but he managed to keep himself from getting into too much trouble with his father and grandfather. When he ventured to Rome, he was off recruiting Italian allies. He stopped at a local bar and saw the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Natalia and Sebastian would fall quickly for each other and share a night of passion.
Sebastian left in the morning before Natalia woke up, leaving his watch and a letter for her explaining he must go back to England to report to his family. Unfortunately, he would never make it back home. Sebastian was captured and murdered for consorting with a muggleborn, having been seen by a few Italian wizards who went to school with Natalia. Natalia never heard from Sebastian again, but she kept his letter and his watch close. It wasn’t long before she realized she was late and, after a trip to the Healers, she discovered she was pregnant. Her heart had never felt quite so full, though she was extremely nervous to be having and raising a child on her own. Her son would be born in the early morning of April 24th the following year. She named him Matteo, meaning gift of god.
Matteo was a very happy and healthy baby. He hardly ever cried or fussed, further solidifying for Natalia that he truly was a gift. Life was still hard for the small family of two. Raising a child in that day and age was expensive and, still a fledgling Healer, Natalia often struggled to make ends meet. By the time Matteo was two years old, she had transferred to St. Mungo’s in London and rented a small two bedroom flat for them to live in. It had always just been Natalia and Matteo, the boy’s mother never dated and never had any more children. She devoted her entire life to her son. Natalia would work long hours, often picking up extra shifts, just to have the funds to keep them afloat. Matteo was always grateful and he didn’t take anything for granted. Natalia would spend all of her free time with him, nurturing him and making sure that every moment spent was spent well. The boy carried his happy-go-lucky attitude with him throughout his adolescence and into his teenage years.
When Matty got his letter from Hogwarts, Natalia was nervous to send him away. She wasn’t ready to part with him, so she kept him home for another year before, eventually, sending him to school. Matty was immediately sorted into Hufflepuff as the Hat could sense just how devoted and kind the boy was. He found friends in his year and house, becoming best friends with Jackson Davies. He took to magic easily and was quite gifted at flying. He didn’t get the best marks in his class, Matty thought himself quite dumb, but he tried his hardest and managed to get by. His third year he joined the house Quidditch team as Keeper, his best friend joining as a Beater. With his burly body, Matty made the perfect Keeper, though he relied on the school broom until his mother eventually saved up enough to buy him a Nimbus his fifth year.
His happiness and carefree attitude was infectious and Matteo loved to make new friends. He was quite popular during his years at Hogwarts as he was a true and devoted friend to many. Nothing ever bothered Matteo. Any problem he had just rolled off him like water off a duck’s back. Jackson was much the same, until his family were mauled to death by rogue werewolves the summer going into their sixth year. Jackson had been staying the night at Matty’s when it happened and his friend was never the same. Matty tried to get Jackson to talk to him, but the boy shut him out and continued down his dark path. Matteo would finally give up on him when he targeted Olivia Moretti during their sixth year. The Cappello boy was protective of his friends and would stand between them and anyone else who caused trouble for him. He was not a fighter, but he used his brute strength to prevent anyone from harming his friends.
Jackson eventually dropped out before their seventh year. Matty often felt sad that his life had taken such a dark turn, but he gave the boy little thought after that. His last year at Hogwarts was spent focusing on his studies, particularly the Magical Creatures. CoMC was his best and favorite subject. He absolutely loved creatures of all kinds and made it his biggest dream to work with them when he graduated. Matty spent a lot of time at the creature sanctuary in the Forbidden Forest, often stopping to chat with the caretaker. He did not graduate at the top of his class or anywhere near that, but he did well enough to ensure he could get the job he wanted. As Matteo got his dream job, his mother - who had started earning enough money to be comfortable - purchased a home for him off Brighton Beach. It was a beautiful, earthy home with plenty of space for his dogs and nifflers and crups and kneazles. It had a private beach and was nestled between two cliffs all on its lonesome. Matteo is so happy with how his life turned out. He still spends a lot of time with his mother, who was his only family.
