Poppy had detention for the entire month of February. It was a rather unpleasant experience, but not one she wasn't used to. Admittedly, she'd been staying out of trouble because of it. Her goal was to go to Hogsmeade with Parker next month. They were going to get sugar quills and whatever else her twin wanted to do. When she wasn't serving out what felt like a life sentence, Poppy was catching up on all the homework in the world. It was tiresome, but it was one of the requirements to maintain her Hogsmeade privileges. The only downside to all of this was that she didn't have time to write her father. Even so, he never failed to send her a letter. He was worried about her, and she silently vowed to write him before the day was out. He had enough to worry about with her absent letters. Today's task was cleaning out the trophy room. Each trophy was meant to be dusted off and polished by hand. She'd scuffed at the assignment. She didn't need magic. She got that it was a school for witchcraft and wizardry, but she swore Hogwarts acted as if one day without magic was supposed to be the bane of everyone's existence. Dressed in clothes she didn't mind getting dirty, Poppy had gotten to work in silence. Poppy, despite being a pain in everyone's arse, had managed to finish an entire case without fail. She had taken out the trophies, dusted the shelves, then the trophies, and finally polished the trophies so that they were spik and span. Someone was supposed to come check in on her every hour, but Poppy hadn't seen a single soul in at least two. She stopped long enough to wipe her nose, leaving a dirt smear across her nose, and then started back on the next case. The door opened and Poppy gave an exaggerated huff. "I was beginning to think you'd forgotten about me," she commented, balancing on the top step of the ladder. "Did you at least bring a snack, or am I to work unsupervised and starved?"Tags: Lina Stover

The castle was always chilly, thus winter's cold touch made Lina long for the warmth of Cara. To combat this longing Lina always made sure to dress in clothes she loved but never would've been able to wear at home. Like her stupidly fluffy pink and yellow jumper, grey wool skirt, and warm knit legging, and comfortable fur lined boots. People just didn't wear cute fluffy clothes like that back home. Reminding herself of such things helped make Lina less homesick.
People could be annoying, loud, and sometimes Lina just wanted to not deal with gossip and too loud debates about silly things like different editions of chocolate frog cards.
Escaping the chaos of the common room with one of her adventure romance novels, and a cute messenger bag filled with snacks (she planned to read for a while, of course she'd need snacks!), and a blanket incase she got a little too chilly while reading. Usually the trophy room was empty, it wasn't great but there were some seats and Lina could often get at least a couple of hours of reading or finishing her class assignments. Apparently today was going to be an outlier, someone was already there. Without any context Lina might've been confused, but Poppy's used of the word 'unsupervised' alone told Lina all she needed to know.
Clearly Poppy was serving detention.
"Honestly I hadn't even known you were here." Lina replied, looking Poppy over. Setting her bag down near the door Lina went to stand near the base of the ladder; it looked very dangerous, what Poppy was doing. Lina wasn't surprised that a such a fierce Lioness would behave so stupidly.
Taking the time to really look at Poppy's face the older girl frowned slightly her hand itching to pull a handkerchief from her pocket. But Poppy was perched rather precariously, she needed both of her hands. Lina still told her though, "You have some dust on your face, did you know that?" She tapped her own face to show Poppy exactly were. "Just there."

Poppy was surprised to hear the younger voice of a student. She turned and stared down at her unexpected company. It was a Hufflepuff girl. What was her name. Leta? Lemur? Loser? Poppy gave an amused snort. It didn't matter. The girl was not the Professor she'd been expecting. Lovely, now she had to wait even longer to be relieved of this sentence. Poppy shook her head as Lina spoke. "Save your breath. I thought you were one of the high and mighty wardens that runs this place." She turned back to the trophies on the top shelf. They all needed to be placed on the ground below. Poppy wasn't going to stay up here and clean them. That would be ridiculous. She didn't fancy falling over and breaking something. She'd broken her arm once. It had been very unpleasant. She'd been in a cast so long she'd become convinced it had become apart of her. The worst part, she wasn't allowed to fight anyone. Jokes on the neighborhood kids though. They'd made fun of her, but once she'd been free, it had been open season.
Poppy glanced down at Lina warily as the girl got closer to the ladder. "You'd best not try any funny business," she warned. "This ladder moves so much as a millimeter and you'll wish you-" she stopped speaking as Lina pointed out she had something on her face. Poppy crossed her eyes trying to see what it was. She gave up after a moment and glared at Lina. "Of course I didn't know. It's not like I keep a mirror plastered to my face," she snapped. The Gryffindor gave a huff and rubbed her sleeve across her face, trying to get the dust off. Once she was satisfied she continued glaring, her eyes widening as she took in Lina's appearance. "What are you wearing," she asked. The outfit was the only thing that saved Lina from being told off. Poppy still had to finish her detention. She didn't need, nor want an audience. The younger of the two girls grabbed an armful of trophies and started to make her way down. "You look ridiculous." Poppy couldn't go without some sort of insult, even if she did think the outfit bold. Lina was asking for trouble, but people didn't stand out without being able to protect themselves. That was her assumption at least.

Lips pursed and head tilting slightly to one side Lina observided Poppy. Merlin help her the Lioness was contrary, thankfully Lina was a Hufflepuff Prefect, and thus not directly incharge of Gryffindor students. That didn't did mean she wanted to see anyone get hurt though so she rested one hand on the ladder to help hold it steady, the other Lina rested on her hip. "Do I really look like the sort to mess about like that?" She asked the younger girl, more than a little insulted.
"You do realise properly polished metal, the stuff most of those trophies are made of, is supposed to be reflective, right?" Maybe she was being dangerously sassy given she was talking to Poppy of all people. But Lina was a little hurt by the insinuation that she'd do anything that could result in another student getting hurt. Being on the receiving end of Poppy's glare didn't help matters. Lina might be older but she was a little bit scared of the Lioness when the redhead was properly angry.
Feeling self conscious Lina looked down at her clothes, blushing in embarrassment, "No I don't," she snipped back but the defence sounded weak even to Lina's own ears. "I think it looks cute."

Poppy smirked. "I don't even know you," she responded. "I've upset the balance of so many lives around here, I can't keep up with the lot of ya." She gave a small huff. "You might be the friend of my enemy." She stepped down off the ladder and set the trophies on the ground. She glanced up at the next shelf and wished for a brief moment she could use magic to just bring them all down. She'd shine them without it, but the task of climbing up and down was a punishment in itself. She turned to Lina. "Besides, you ever heard of a wolf in sheep's clothing? They come in like they're one of ya, next thing you know, you're dead. Can't be too careful."
Poppy hadn't forgotten the sly little comment about the trophies. She'd have happily dropped the armful she'd held moments before on Lina's head, but it would do her no good. Instead, she took a different approach. "And for the record, I'm sure there's plenty of mirrors in the dorms, but I guess you like getting dressed in the dark." She started back up the ladder. She'd come to the conclusion that this soft-hearted badger wasn't going to cause an 'unfortunate accident'. She paused when Lina stated she thought her outfit was cut. "You should try thinking less."

Frowning in distaste Lina had to wonder to herself, how did Poppy Carmichael see the world? Honestly, how could one person be so aloof, insensitive, and down right antagonistic. "You're paranoid Poppy, you know that?" Lina informed the Lioness primly. It was wild to Lina, she couldn't imagine it, having so many enemies. The hufflepuff felt like it'd make her crazy, like she'd be looking over her shoulder so much she'd be better off walking around with a mirror in her hand. But Poppy? She might be a little paranoid but she also seemed almost proud of her reputation and ever growing list of enemies.
"There's nothing at all wrong with liking colour. The castle is already so gloomy and dreary," she shot back, trying to pretend like she wasn't just a tiny bit hurt. "Do I have dress like a school girl at a funeral in our silly gloomy uniforms all the time?"
Cheeks puffed up Lina pouted, "Okay, well, as fun as this has been, I think I've been insulted enough for one day." The prefect said decisively with a nod. That said she turned and made for the door, "Bye bye Poppy, and worry not, I'll send a professor to check on you soon."

"I am not," she retorted. Poppy had no reason to be paranoid. Paranoid people were always afraid, and Poppy Carmichael knew no such thing as fear. She was brave and fierce and would crush anyone who said otherwise. The red haired girl couldn't disagree with the comment on how boring and dreary the castle was. It really could use some color. "Feels like a prison, yeah?" She frowned lightly. Hogwarts had been all the talk, but this place kind of sucked. Yeah, it had some good qualities here and there, but for the most part, all of the rules were a drag. She bet Lina didn't mind the rules, she was a Prefect after all. "I'd much rather wear pants," Poppy commented. "Skirts are too restricting."
When the other girl started pouting, Poppy was all smiles. "I doubt it's been fun, else you wouldn't be leaving." She leaned back some since she wasn't too high on the ladder. "Hey, wait. Didn't you have a reason for coming in here," she asked. Poppy was a bit bored by herself, so some company wouldn't hurt, so long as Lina stayed on her side of the room.

Frowning like a mother who'd just heard their child say something disappointing and a little bit sad Lina shook her head. "Poppy, how often do you just assume some is, or is at least friends with, an enemy? Because if it's more than once in awhile I would argue that's paranoid." Why was Lina even having this conversation? She didn't know, perhaps because Poppy was so wildly different from herself that Lina was curious? Maybe it was because Lina couldn't help herself around a cute girl.
Humming Lina rocked back and forth on her heels, "Yeah, I think it might be all the stone, and no windows. Back where I come from it's all huge windows, and stone the colour of sunlight. England is so bland and colourless by comparison." Lina told Poppy, maybe talking about Egypt a little too much. Who wanted to hear about the boring little village Lina grew up it?
She didn't really understand how skirts could be 'restricting', "Jeans aren't?" Lina asked, she supposed that it was a matter of familiarity, she just hadn't worn heavy, tight jeans like Poppy probably had.
Half way out Lina paused, looking back at Poppy very confused and blushing slightly. Why was Poppy stopping her? Honestly Lina had thought that perhaps Poppy wanted her to leave. Still, confused or not, Lina lifted her heavy bag, "I came here to avoid people, read, and have snacks." Lina answered primly.

Poppy thought about it for a moment. "Well, I don't have any friends, but I do have a lot of enemies." She grinned at that. People she didn't mess with only included those who were friends with Parker. She didn't want her twin suffering just because she had a nasty attitude with the general population. Aside from those people, everyone else was a potential enemy. "And I'm sure normal people have plenty of friends, and thus friends of friends." She shrugged. "I'm not worried about them coming at me though. I strike fear in the hearts of all men and woman, not the other way around, so your point is invalid." She put on a pleasant smile just for shits and giggles. Her eyes sparkled for just a moment and then she shrugged.
She started back up the ladder, pulling more of the trophies into the bend of her arm. "Is that so? If you ain't English, what are you," she asked. She peered down at the Hufflepuff curiously. Poppy thought everything was bland. She considered what she was about to say, then said. "I think the world needs more pink." She nodded as though it was the only answer. Poppy loved the color pink. As rough and tough as she might be, it was her favorite color. Most of her journals were filled with enchanted pink ink.
Poppy then shook her head. "Nopes. I can run in jeans. Skirts just show everything and I have to sit a certain wait. It's bloody ridiculous." She rolled her eyes. It was kind of nice talking to someone that wasn't her brother. She wasn't saying she wanted to be friends with Lina, but she honestly didn't mind the company. She'd been bored out of her mind prior to the Hufflepuff showing up. She'd even go so far as to cut back on the insults. Just for the time being. "Well I'll clean my trophies and you read your book." It was almost a demand. "And maybe throw me a snack. I'll give you money."

The more Lina listened to Poopy, the more her frown deepened. "I suppose that's fair, but I myself prefer to stay out of other people's drama and feuds. If I'm going to put in all the effort of having an enemy, then you best bet I will have a very good reason to have made them my enemy in the first place." Lina reasoned, eyes down cast as her hands fiddled with the strap of her bag. "It's much too much effort to be angry at someone, and I have other things to do; like arguing semantics."
"On that note, paranoid doesn't necessarily fear." The young girl began, unable to help herself. When she had first moved to England to live with her father he'd made arguing semantics into a bit of game, and a way to teach Lina the meaning of more complex English words. It had worked too, they'd still argue semantics over breakfast just for fun. Was Lina really going to argue semantics with a girl known for a short temper and strong knuckles? Yes, yes she was. "To be paranoid one just has to believe that others ar unfair, lying, or acting in someway with the intention of causing the first person harm. Though I suppose you do have some proof, but I would argue it's all rumor and thus not very strong." Lina rattled off like a girl who read dictionaries and thesauruses with the intention of winning arguments regularly.
Biting her lip Lina glanced up at Poppy, "But you know Poppy, in a way I do envy you." She began, the corner of her lips lifting in a slight, playful, smile. "I just don't have the energy to maintain so many fued and enemies. It sounds exhausting and yet you manage all that on top of classes."
Poppy's question surprised Lina, she never expected that the Lioness would care enough to ask. She just didn't seem the type to Lina. Whatever Poppy's motives for asking, the inquiry still left Lina blushing. "I'm Egyptian, the magical village I grew up in sat just on an oasis, and was the second largest all wizard community. Compared to here, it was beautiful, and bright, and warm. Magic was everywhere, so it feels it's odd here, how much one has to hide." Lina explained with a wistful sigh, turning away slightly. "Though I suppose I'd have to hide there too, just in a different way." The girl murmured to herself. Every place had pros and cons, and a person just had to decide what balance they could live with.
At the lionesses comment one of Lina's hand tugged at the pink hems of her sleeves, blushing. It was silly, it wasn't like Poppy had complimented Lina; and yet, she still blushed. A fatal flaw, a cute girl had to merely smile at Lina and the Puff turned into a blushing mess. It was a weakness, one that Lina was well aware of. But that knowledge did nothing to change the fact that, at the end of the day, Lina was a useless lesbian.
Giggling Lina shook her head at Poppy, "That's what briefs are for. Hide the important bits, and then you can wear any sort of skirt you desire. Plus, the breeze was always nice, especially under the midday sun."
The lack of insults, or rather the limited number of them, didn't go unnoticed by Lina. It was something she'd never heard of Poppy doing before and the girl had to wonder: Why? Was there some meaning behind Poppy's uncharacteristic civility? Did she, for some unknown reason, deem Lina worthy of her unique brand of kindness? That thought just made Lina blush, she thought that attraction seemed more likely than a desire to be friends. Or maybe, were they 'getting on' (was that the phrase?) simply because Lina didn't rise to the fight?
Lastly though, Lina had to wonder if maybe she was just plain bored.
She hoped it wasn't that one.
"That sounds like a fine idea," Lina chirped brightly, part of her was very relieved that she wouldn't have to look for somewhere else to read her books. The girl had just been about to set her bag down when Poppy offered to buy some of Lina's snacks. Charging someone for something that she'd readily share seemed wrong. "Or, hear me out you step off the ladder, because I'm not throwing anything at you while you're up there." Lina agrued, offering her own deal. One that took safety into account. "Then I share my snacks, and, if you ever see anyone bully me, you stop them." To Lina this was a much better arrangement, sure 'stop them' was a bit vauge, and Poppy might take it to mean 'punch them' but the Puff was quite certain that Poppy's face alone would be more than enough. Plus, it wasn't like Lina got bullied anyways.
Notes: sorry this got a bit long
