Character History: Back when Septimus attended Hogwarts he regularly heard two comments regarding his house. It was either a joke with varying degree of wit, playing on how similar his name, Septimus, is to serpent, making Slytherin a perfect match, or a comment on what a shame it was that Ravenclaw had lost such a bright student. But what people did not consider was that all his studious drive and brilliance was simply born out of the greed to know everything. Every subject just an obstacle to overcome so he could say he did it. It was certainly his dedication and work ethic that gained him the title of Prefect, but he carried resentment for a number of years for not having been chosen for Head Boy.
His parents were proud of him regardless though (his mother somewhat cluelessly so, being a muggle)
Right after school Septimus was driven to continue on immediately, to learn more and jump into a job straight away. It took his father considerable effort to persuade him to take a year to travel, if only to be able to show future employers that he gathered experience outside of school. What his father did not know was that he went to the US not for life experience but that he walked straight through the front door of MACUSA. He did few meaningful tasks and was mostly kept busy instead of employed in an efficient way, but he soaked up the atmosphere and ended up putting his name into the minds of a few (though admittedly not very influential) people. He had his first taste of government work and he could hardly wait to return back home and start his career in all seriousness.
Back home he got himself a miniscule flat in London and started the arduous journey of studying the law, his sights set on joining the ministry as a fully fledged member of the International Magical Office of Law. It took many years of hard work, but he reached his goal, and relatively quickly too.
Aged 37 he had reached a position high enough that he was afforded a personal assistant to help him manage his workload. This is how he met Leon Wilson. Against his better judgement he let his defences be whittled down by the young man’s charme and wit and when his resolve finally crumbled, things moved fast between them. Despite his best efforts, the press got wind of their relationship and it was all he could do to scramble and salvage the situation by moving Leon away from his position as personal assistant and get him into the proper training, but most importantly in a position that had him not dependent on Septimus. It took him calling in a number of favours, but it helped ease public opinion relatively quickly. After the dust had settled, it took less than two years for them to get married.
This went well for a while but they fought often due to their similarly headstrong and passionate personalities. But Septimus decided to pour more of his energy into his work, his connections and his ambitions and it paid off. Aged 43 he managed to get a seat on the Wizengamot. And while Leon showed himself proud and happy, the jealously was quite obvious to anyone willing to see it. For Septimus it took a long time to see, time which Leon used wisely to expedite his partner’s connections and influence.
Indeed, he was completely oblivious to Leon using him for his own gain until details of a meeting were made public, which happened behind closed doors. Details were leaked that revealed Septimus’ not quite legal use of magic to bring a favourable outcome about. It took for his career to be destroyed before he started doubting Leon’s motives. How well he had played him. Leon then painted himself as the good guy, the tragic hero, doing his best to salvage the situation and the trustworthiness of the council Septimus had been a part of while going against his own husband.
(Aged 46) Wallowing in self-pity and at his lowest in his career and self-esteem, he still found the strength to make the decision to leave his husband and retreat from the public eye. He sold his house that they had been living in and moved to a modest village at the coast. With the surplus of the London living, he could afford to take time off and refocus, rediscover himself and rediscover his fascination with magic.
He built a rather impressive library for himself and spent his time studying, at times with the help of renowned individuals and academics, that only fuelled his thirst for knowledge.
Before long he started offering his knowledge to others by becoming a private tutor for transfiguration with an angle of the history of the subject and found himself quite content with his low-profile life and more time for leisure and curiosity.
