Character History:
As a child Eric never knew that his two eldest brothers, Edmonde and Everette, had a different mother than he and Elwin. Like his brothers, and most people in Echternach to an extent, Eric grew up speaking Luxembourgish, French, and German but the four eldest boys also tacked Spanish onto that list.
They weren’t linguistic protogies, but rather shaped by the environment they lived in. Since the national language was Luxembourgish they learned it first, Edmonde and Everette’s mother had been Spanish and they continued to speak it as much as possible after her death; thus Eric and Elwin picked some up by proximity. Then Eric’s father made sure his children learned French so they’d be ready when it came time for them to study at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Since they would all go to aforementioned schools they were encouraged to speak French around the house. The nature of Echternach, a town split in half by the Luxembourg - German border, meant that the Anderson boys picked up German on top of Luxembourgish and French. How even unintentional the last was.
The Anderson house was always a storm of boys, language, and familial love. Often the boys switched between languages from sentence to sentence, thought to though. One minute Everette was trying to talk Evan into putting on his shoes, the next he'd be yelling insults at Elwin. Although as each boy got older they spoke more and more French in the house.
Unlike his brothers Eric kept up learning German from the neighbours, he liked the idea of being able to read more books and talk to more people.
Shortly before Eric was to turn 4 his mother went to Canada for work, she was meant to return at the end of August but her plane went dark during a storm. Eric’s mother, along with everyone else on the plane was believed to have died when the plane went silent. Edvard was the only one who refused to believe his mother was gone.
Eric was 9 when he met Jane at a quidditch new years party for his father's work. The young woman was a new member of another small french quidditch team and she was being scouted by Elliot’s team at the time. Eric wasn’t sure what had happened but within a year Jane got his father smiling more than he’d seen in years so when his father told Eric and his brothers that Jane was going to be their new step-mother Eric took it better than the rest of the Anderson boys. He cared more about his father smiling than the ghost of his mother.
It was during school that Eric became very annoyed with his brothers, Edmonde was known as the best Duelist, Everette was already a star on the Quidditch pitch and Elwin was known to get along with everyone. Eric felt like he couldn’t go five minutes without someone comparing him to one of his brothers. So Eric quickly made himself stand out in his own way.
Needing to stand out in his own way Eric came up with a plan.
Unlike his brothers Eric spoke German, Luxembourgish, and Spanish openly in classes. Often showing off with all the languages he knew, Eric made friends with many students from all ages who spoke languages other than French. Since the Beauxbatons Academy accepted students from Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Belgium as well as France Eric had no shortage of friends to make over the years. In fact he became well known among younger muggle borns who knew very little French as someone to ask for help, if he didn’t speak their native language than Eric had at least four friends who did.
As Eric got older he found himself deeply in love with Charms, runes, ancient writings, and myths. He had taught himself to read Latin, Just so he could read more ancient myths. He also developed a love of romantic concepts and writing and thus grew into a rather romantic persona. He liked the way girls would stand back and watch him while giggling as he read and so he made a point of reading alone in open places just so it would happen more often.
Between studying every charm and rune Eric could read about he also spent time studying history of all sorts when his brain needed a break from magic. He found he was immensely fond of Greek and Roman history and thought that the Library of Alexandrina was the best thing ever. He fell in love with the idea of working there only to find out within moments that it had been burned down.
During the summer after he learned of the tragedy that was the Library of Alexandrina Eric told his step mother Jane because she encouraged his love of books as best as she could. It was Jane who found out for Eric that there was such a place as Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a commemoration of the Library of Alexandria, and an attempt to rekindle something of the brilliance that this earlier center of study and erudition represented. Eric was 14 when he swore to one day work at Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
By the time Eric was in his 6th year he already had a reputation with girls, boys, and everyone in between a mile long. Yet he still managed to find many willing partners to flirt with. He was careful not to lead anyone on though. Mostly because his younger brother Edvard had made good friends with Joan Forest and she tended to give Eric long winded lectures about his dating habits. He found her older sister act to be immensely annoying. Once he tried telling Joan that he’d stop playing around if she went out with him. Joan hexed Eric into next week and he never flirted with her again.
Eric did have one serious girlfriend, a girl Ulla who was in his year, she was the only person apart from family that Eric has ever claimed to truly love. The two were very on and off during school since their 5th year, switching wildly between being friends and dating since, according to Eric, ‘I’ll never love anyone like I like Ulla, but I’ll also never get it right. Not even for her.’ Even though Eric always went back to Ulla he often got dumped by the girl since Ulla never felt Eric was fully committed to the relationship since he prefered to study history and runes over going out on dates. They also never completely broke up since both of them always had strong feelings for each other.
Between the times he was dating Ulla Eric also went out with a girl Selene, they broke up because according to Eric ‘she had the same hair colour as me’. There was also Paulina, Jeremiah, Candice, Alex, Bendt, Maria, Sergio, Sara, and two different Allys.
As Eric finished his 7th year he felt rather lost as to what he was going to do with his life, he debated the whole year between studying more history or more runes. Right up until he was walking around Paris with friends and saw in a paper that the Louvre was hiring.
While it wasn’t Bibliotheca Alexandrina Eric felt it was close enough to start. He finished his last year at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic with the highest grades in Charms and History that he could get.
The first job Eric ever got was working at the Louvre. It wasn`t until Eric was actually there sitting in the interview that he realised he had no formal muggle education and had no actual experience the job required. But Eric wasn’t going to let silly things like that keep him from the job he wanted. One quick memory charm and he got a job in the Roman Antiquities department talking about art to tourists. He had to fry himself studying art to get it right since he actually knew myths and history better than he did artwork but Eric’s vast skills at talking up a storm in multiple languages saw he did well at the job.
Still, while Eric loved talking art and history at the Louvre it still wasn’t what he really wanted to be doing. Since Eric was living in the muggle world he began practising wandless magic. It was dangerous to always care his wand, but he didn't like how defenceless he felt without it. While learning wandless magic he found charms to be the easiest.
Knowing that his next job was going to tie him down for a while Eric went to see a few of the most noteworthy Libraries he knew of. He visited Al-Qarawiyyin Library in Morocco and St. Catherine’s Monastery Library in Egypt (that one was last), Eric also once broke into the Vatican Library with a bit of magic late at night just to enjoy it without all the tourists that had been there during the day. He almost got caught by a lazy night guard but magically made a noise sound from back the way the guard had just come and Eric quickly got out without incident.
Knowing he wanted to move to Egypt Eric took his time, he made sure to learn Egyptian Arabic from a muggle co-worker. After Eric had turned 20 he had saved up enough money and got himself on a plane to Alexandrina Egypt. It then took Eric 7 months and 24 days of working at a cafe before he got an interview at Bibliotheca Alexandrina. While he actually knew a thing or two this time Eric still needed the help of yet another illegal memory charm to get him a job working at the Rare Books and Special Collections Library a part of Bibliotheca Alexandrina. For the first two years Eric worked as an unpaid grad lying about needing the internship for his Master's degree in Library Science. Between quickly picking up everything, making a great translator, and the lie being about studying Library Sciences of all things he was never caught. No one even considered that the young Eric, who could easily speak French, Luxembourgish, German, Spanish, Egyptian Arabic, and read Latin would ever lie about something like Library Sciences.
Who would even lie about studying Library Sciences of all things? Well Eric Christian Anderson would.
It wasn’t until Eric finished his first day at Bibliotheca Alexandrina that he finally let himself visit the ruins of the Library of Alexandria.
Working at The Rare Books and Special Collections Library Eric learned a lot of history. Most of his work related to checking translations, and translating for visitors, out of necessity he began picking up English. Because a lot of English speakers could only speak English. After several years at the library Eric began to miss the magical world and went home to Luxembourg to see Elwins and Everette’s children.
It was back home that Eric was encouraged to find something new by his step mother. She even helped him figure out his next destination: it had to be new, and magical, and he had to be able to work as more than a well read translator. So he spent 20 months with family, working in a magical Germany, and brushing up on his magic; he'd only been using it sparingly for years. But Eric ws happy to find that he could still cast charms as easily as ever..
It was only when Eric got a little too bored back in Echternach that Eric decided to set off in search of a new adventure. He applied to a few places in magical England, even writing to Hogwarts about applying as a charms Professor or Librarian. He’d be happy with either one.
