Lunch always served as a nice break between classes. His schedule was usually extremely busy during the morning hours, and slightly more lax after lunch to avoid the sluggishness that often overcame him after a large meal. Today in particular, he looked forward to the midday meal for the sole purpose of seeing Bella. He had enjoyed spending more time with her, and while he did not want to fall into the mushy gushy category that Finch and Rose held, he could understand why. There was a certain sense of peace that came with devoting one's time to another person. Liam personally enjoyed not having to spend every second in the Astronomy Tower, just for a mere moment with Bella. Still, that Tower was his favorite spot in the whole castle. When the night skies were clear, he was there. Those moments would always be special.
Taking a brief moment to stop by the Hufflepuff table long enough to bother his little brother, Liam ruffled Ralphie's hair and told him to keep out of trouble. It seemed he was having to tell the younger Sagewater that more often than not. Ralph seemed to be in the business of poking his nose where it didn't belong. Liam was concerned, but he knew his brother was just trying to impress his friends and keep up with the crowd. He couldn't recall getting into that much madness at Ralph's age. All the same, kids were going to be kids. So long as their mother didn't find out, everything would be just fine.
He took his seat at the Ravenclaw table next to Bella. "Sorry to keep you waiting. How's your day been," he asked with a bright smile.

Things were going so well with her and Liam, but Bella was going through it right now. She recently discovered that all of her mother's belongings had disappeared, likely stolen for some reason. Bella didn't want to believe someone was capable of stealing such intimate items, but she and Claire had exhausted all other options. Her heart was breaking with the loss of them, feeling like she just lost her mother all over again. She did her best to stay positive, but it was getting pretty hard to do. The young witch went through the motions that morning, attended her classes and did her best to pay attention, but there was this heaviness sitting on her chest that just got heavier with each passing moment. The only thing that kept her going was the promise of seeing Liam at lunch. Laurie might have failed to cheer her up, but perhaps Liam was the key to making her feel better.
As soon as the bell rang, Bella bolted out of Arithmancy and went directly to the Great Hall. Laurie had been spending more and more time with Nathaniel while Bella was spending time with Liam. She never pressed her friend on details of what the two of them got up to, but she could see that she was happy. That made her feel less guilty for abandoning her for her boyfriend. Her boyfriend. She had a boyfriend now. That singular thought was enough to put a smile on her face as she took her seat at the Ravenclaw table. Her chocolate gaze lifted from her plate to see Liam ruffling his brother's hair and yet another smile touched her lips. Her heart fluttered a bit in her chest and she was growing more confident that he'd be able to make her feel better. He made his way over to her, a bright smile on his face, and she couldn't help but match his enthusiasm. "I didn't mind," she said before leaning over to press a soft kiss to his cheek. He asked how her day has been and she faltered. The girl chewed momentarily on her bottom lip. "It's better now," she answered honestly before a sigh escaped her. "Some of my stuff was stolen. Things that belonged to my mother." She tore her gaze away from him to push food around her plate with her fork. "I can't imagine anyone would be so cruel as to take them, but Claire and I have searched everywhere and they're nowhere to be found." Bella glanced up at him with sad eyes, but a small smile pulled at her lips. "But now I'm here with you and I already feel better."

Her response reminded him of how pure of heart she was. He liked that Bella was always patient and kind. He had vowed never to take advantage of that. He would do all he could to be on time and be there for her in her time of need. He didn't know his vow was going to be put to the test so soon. She kissed his cheek, and he wished for a brief moment that they had more privacy so that he could give her a proper kiss. Those thoughts faded into nothingness as Bella informed him that her things had been taken. Things that belonged to her mother! Liam was not hot-headed or tough. He couldn't defend Bella like Nate had defended Laurie during the fight at the Black Lake. Yes, he'd heard. Everyone had heard. That being said, he could be upset. He knew how much Bella's mother had played a part in Bella's life. He knew that Bella loved her mother dearly and that her passing had taken a heavy toll. He couldn't imagine the angst she was feeling at the loss of items so precious.
Liam did the first thing that came to mind, and that was to wrap her in a tight hug. "I'm sorry, Bella." He held her for a long moment. He didn't get why anyone would do such a thing to her either. Bella Clarke of all people should not have enemies. She was the nicest person in the world. He slowly released her, his gaze meeting hers. "What can I do to help?" He hated seeing her sad like this. He would ask around and get to the bottom of this, but for now, he wanted to help her in any way he could at this exact moment.

She, too, wished for more privacy. While part of her was certain that people were too engrossed in their own lives to pay them much attention, she didn't like the idea that they could see everything the two of them were doing. She wanted to kiss him, yes, but talking about her mother was sure to bring tears and she wanted to tuck away in a corner somewhere where they couldn't be seen. She was doing her absolute best to keep it together and being around Liam already had her feeling lighter. He pulled her in for a tight hug and she wrapped her arms around him and buried her face into his shoulder. He told her he was sorry and she squeezed her eyes shut tight to stop the tears from flowing over. It just... it was such a cruel and unusual thing for someone to do. She couldn't imagine who would have done such a thing. Bella couldn't think so ill of people, but there were no other options at this point. Someone had broken into her dorm and stole things that were most precious to her. What did she even do to deserve that?
Isabella sniffled as he started to pull away and she quickly wiped at her eyes before meeting his gaze. Liam was so caring and compassionate and it made her heart swell to see. She offered him a sad smile and brought a hand to rest upon his cheek. "I just need you here with me," she told him, her thumb sweeping momentarily against his skin before she let her hand fall to her lap. "I don't want this to spoil our time together. Will you tell me about your day?"

Liam was already going through the list of potential suspects. All roads led to a certain Gryffindor, but that wasn't entirely possible. In fact, it was a downright stretch. How could Poppy manage to get into the Ravenclaw tower without anyone noticing her? How did she know which bed belonged to Bella? Maybe, and this was a big maybe, if she did manage to break in, it had been Laurie she'd been going after. The only other option was that it was a Ravenclaw who was the culprit. No one came to mind that would be so selfish, intolerant, bold, or foul to commit such a heinous crime. He met her gaze as she looked up at him. She looked really sad and it broke his heart. There had to be someone out there that knew something. Who at Hogwarts had their nose in everybody's business? He'd pay them whatever they wanted to see Bella smile again. He leaned his cheek against her hand, nodding lightly as she told him what she needed. "Whatever you need, Bella." He gently took her hand in his. "Let's I passed my Alchemy exam this," he told her. "That's about the highlight of the day," he told her with a half hearted smile. "Everything else has been busy work." He wished there had been more to report.

The witch had given it a lot of thought and she could not think of a single person at Hogwarts who would want to target her like this. It just seemed so unimaginable to her. All she wanted was for this person to bring her belongings back to her. She'd hold no ill will toward them and she'd forgive them immediately if they were just returned to her. But this was the last thing she wanted to think about while she was spending time with Liam. If she could just push the thoughts away for the duration of their time together, she'd be happy again. He took her hand in his and she held onto him tightly, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. Her eyes were focused on him as he started to tell her about his day and a soft smile started to spread across her face. "That's great," she told him. It was a small bit of good news to help lighten her spirit. "My day's been much of the same. I may have... fallen asleep in History of Magic," she admitted with her cheeks burning. Bella had never once fallen asleep in a class before; she always paid the utmost attention, but she could admit that, with everything going on, she hadn't been getting the most restful sleep. "I don't think anyone but Laurie noticed, but I've got to read over her notes later tonight to make sure I didn't miss anything."

Liam couldn't help but question how he'd gotten so lucky. Bella was genuine, even when her world must be turned upside down. He gave her a surprised look when she admitted to falling asleep in History of Magic. It was his favorite subject, but that wasn't the reason for the surprise. He'd never seen Bella sleep through class. She was a model student. "You're lucky Professor Binns didn't catch you," he said after a moment. He looked over the spread before them. The vegetable soup was looking promising. It was light and he wouldn't be too drowsy afterwards. "If you want, I'll lend you mine as well," he offered. "Or we can meet up later this evening in the common room and have a study session." Yes, he was just trying to spend a little more time with her. They could sit by the fire and bounce some facts off of one another. That was the nice thing about dating someone who was an intellectual like himself.

Yes, Liam was surprised. Bella offered him a sheepish smile at the look he was giving her. She's an honest witch, but she'd prefer they didn't get into the reasons why she fell asleep. She could remember the way kids teased her her first year for being so emotional. She didn't want to tell him how she'd been falling apart at night long after her dorm mates went to bed. He told her she was lucky Professor Binns didn't catch her and she felt ashamed for half of a second before it went away. "I know," she said with a soft sigh. Laurie had, thankfully, woken her up before she slept through the whole class. Her gaze followed his and she took in all the food in front of them. Bella knew she should eat something, but she just didn't feel like eating right now. Still, if she didn't eat something Liam was sure to be worried about her. Her teeth grazed her bottom lip for a moment before his voice was reaching her ears again. She looked up at him, a soft smile spreading across her lips as she reached out to pour herself some vegetable soup. "I'd really like that," she told him, pausing for a moment to lean in and press another kiss to his cheek. She turned back to the soup, bringing it to her and taking a cautious sip. "Laurie is bound to be with Nathaniel so maybe we can get a quiet corner all to ourselves." Bella looked back over at him and smiled.

She was right, he would have been worried. It was sort of in the boyfriend job description. He waited for her to fix her plate before he did the same. "Excellent pick," he told her with a smile, hoping to lighten the mood a bit. It was cheesy, he knew that. It was even kind of lame, but it was the best he had. He should be better at cheering people up. He'd had to do the same for Ralph after his father had passed away. This was a little different. Bella's mother had been absent for years. This wasn't something new. Saying it was like ripping off a band aid didn't quite cut it. No, this was far more heinous. The color flushed to his cheeks as she leaned in and gave him another kiss. He didn't think he'd ever get used to that. He wasn't sure he ever wanted to. Sure, they were still in that new love stage of their relationship, but he had no complaints if the feelings lasted forever. "They sure have been spending a lot of time together," he commented as he too took a moment to eat a spoonful of soup. "Are they secretly dating," he asked. She figured Bella and Laurie were bound to share such secrets. Nate hadn't exactly been open about the matter. Liam had his suspicions though.

Bella offered him a bright smile when he complimented her pick before she leaned in to kiss his cheek. His skin was soft against her lips and the feeling brought a rush of warmth to her cheeks, her smile turning a bit sheepish as she leaned back in her seat. Liam had been her favorite person for a while now because of how understanding and kind he was. He cared about others even if he didn't show it. Their relationship aside, she was really glad to have him in her corner. Unable to contain herself, Isabella reached out and grabbed his hand, intertwining their fingers together. Just being here with him was already helping more than he could ever imagine.
Liam asked about Laurie and Nate and Bella sputtered as she went to take a spoonful of soup, splashing what was on the spoon. She let go of his hand to clean up her mess, feeling a little flustered. "Nate and Laurie?" she let out a strange laugh at the idea of them being together. "No way! That's not what's happening. It can't be! They're just friends," she got out, though his question did have her wondering... "Laurie would have told me if she was. That's not something that she would hide from me."

For a long time, Bella had just been that girl whom he'd run into on occasion. Sometimes he'd hoped she would be there in the tower, but he'd never looked into why. He had been oblivious to his feelings for her. He'd just considered her a fellow Ravenclaw who had tasteful interests and provided good company. Maybe that was why they paired so well together. They'd been friends first. She kissed him again, and like clockwork he smiled. He liked it when she kissed him. He liked kissing her. He'd never even considered it up their first kiss. It was kind of funny and sad at the same time. Her fingers intertwined with his, and he leaned against her ever so lightly. He used to think Finch and Rose were over the top in their honeymoon phase. Talk about calling the kettle black.
He instantly pulled back as her soup splashed. "Sorry," he apologized, not meaning to have startled her. He tilted his head as she laughed. Was she covering for Laurie and Nate? "I mean, we spent a lot of time together too. Now look at us," he said with an amused smile. Nate was such a stickler. He was willing to bet he wouldn't say anything even if they were dating. Laurie was a different story. "If they're not dating, then what's up with the two of them," he asked. "I thought they didn't get along, but recently it seems like they get along just fine."

Bella's mind was still circling as she tried to wrap her head around the idea of Nate and Laurie together. I mean, not that anyone thinking Laurie was pretty was a surprise, but Nathaniel James? He was like Hogwarts' own resident heartbreaker. Liam pointed out that they spent a lot of time together and that was true. Laurie never knew about her crush on Liam, she kept it close to her heart. But Laurie was different than Bella. She would have told her. "No, she definitely would have told me if she liked him." He asked her what was up with the two of them and Bella slurped on a spoonful of soup. She lowered her spoon and nodded her head. "She said that he's not at all like she thought he was. They actually get along great." Dark eyes widened as she looked at him. "Oh my gods, does she actually like him and really not tell me?"

Liam shrugged when Bella said she would know if Laurie had a crush on Nate. She was probably right. If Laurie had been bold enough to tell him about her absurd family curse, then surely she could be bold enough to tell her best friend about a crush. He just thought it was a bit strange, considering the reason he and Bella had even gotten together was due to Laurie and Nate conspiring with one another. That had not been a coincidence. He might have felt less inclined to bring up the topic, had the two of them dismissed each other's existence afterward, but they were still hanging out. It was strange. Not unpleasant though. He thought Nate could use someone to ground him, so long as he didn't break Laurie's heart. That would make things really awkward between everyone. Liam nodded in agreement as Bella informed him that Laurie had had the wrong idea about Nate. He could understand that. He hadn't liked Nate much in the beginning either. The guy was a brick wall, and it had taken a lot of patiently chipping away at said wall to get to see what was on the other side. Yes, Nate still irked him at times, but not nearly as much. Some days he was convinced it was on purpose. He paused with his spoon in his mouth as the realization sunk in. He swallowed and set his spoon in his bowl. "It's possible, or they could just be good friends." It was cute seeing her eyes get all wide like that. He raised his spoon, letting the contents of the soup pour back into the bowl. "Nate's lips are sealed. Maybe I can ask Finch, but I'm sure you'd have better luck getting an answer out of Laurie."

Bella was completely clueless when it came to the scheme to get her and Liam together. She had just finally admitted her crush to someone other than herself and Laurie convinced her to do something about it. She had no idea that Nate approached Liam in the same way. But she had grown a tad suspicious of how much time Nate and Laurie were spending together, but she had always given them the benefit of the doubt. They were good friends and it made Bella happy to see how much fun they had with each other. But with Liam bringing it to her attention, she couldn't help but wonder... If Laurie and Nate were dating or at the very least like each other, then that would mean that her friend would have a chance at romance and Bella thought that was a wonderful thing! He said that it was possible, but made the comment that they could just be good friends. Yes, that was true. Bella's eyebrows furrowed together as she thought more on it. Her dark eyes flickered over to his face as he started speaking again. "Maybe," she said. "I can't imagine that she wouldn't tell me if I asked about it." Bringing her spoon to her lips, Bella slurped on her soup. "I'll ask her before we go to bed tonight. And then we'll know!"

Liam let Bella think on it while he ate some more of his soup. He found a piece of bread to dip, and busied himself with tearing off pieces. When Bella finally did speak, he nodded, not wanting to speak with his mouth full. He'd give anything to be a fly on the wall as Bella interrogated her roommate. Then again, interrogate was a strong word. He didn't think Bella had it in her to sit Laurie down with a single candle lighting the room and demand answers. The image was amusing enough. Still, he'd have loved to see Laurie's reaction after she and Nate put him through such trouble. He wasn't upset with them by any means. He and Bella paired well together, and it was nice to openly reciprocate each other's feelings. The point was that they had plotted in secrecy. "Good luck," he encouraged the other Ravenclaw. "We can discuss your findings in the morning." Maybe this was good for Bella. It would hopefully distract her from the missing items for a brief moment.
