Bella was rifling through her dorm searching for something she discovered was missing recently. Clothes were strewn across the room as she pilfered through her trunk, the girl adding more and more to the piles as she desperately searched. The anxiety was crawling up her throat, her heart pounding in her chest, tears threatening to spill over at the sheer panic she felt. How could she have been so daft as to lose something so valuable? Her attention was focused entirely on her search and she didn't even realize someone had come to join her in the room. "Where could it be?" she asked herself out loud, her voice breaking as the emotion overwhelmed her. How could she have been so careless?

Claire was always busy, busy, busy. Sixth year brought new opportunities which turned into work, so Claire’s schedule was full all day. But her dad thought her that no matter how busy she was, she had to schedule at least thirty minutes to do absolutely nothing every single day. She glanced down at her wristwatch, noting that she had exactly thirty minutes until she had to go down to supper. She was already sliding her school bag off her shoulder when she opened the door to her dorm and stopped in her tracks. Normally no one would be here at this time and Bella’s frantic form threw her off a little. “What’s going on?” She asked, knowing Bella wouldn’t notice her until she spoke up.

Bella jumped a little when she heard a familiar voice speak up, the girl whipping around with a few items of clothes in each hand. “Claire!” She took in a shuddering breath. “I can’t find my mum’s journal.” Tears welled in the raven’s eyes. Her mother’s journal was one of her most prized possessions; it contained all her mother’s thoughts and pictures of constellations she had drawn by hand, their stories written alongside them. “It’s one of the only things I have left of her. You haven’t seen it, have you?” It was almost too much to hope that she had.

It seemed liked Claire would have to give up her free time by the look on Bella’s face. It wasn’t until the tears started to well up and she mentioned her mother that Claire realized how serious this was. She had both of her parents, even if they were dragging their divorce out, and she couldn’t even begin to imagine just how horrible this must have felt. But she tried her best to understand.
“No, I haven’t,” she replied as she placed her bag on the foot of her bed before she turned to face Bella. Why would someone move the journal? It was very unlikely that if it had been stolen that it was one of their roommates. They had all been together since first year and had little to no issues in the past. But this wasn’t the first time Claire noticed something had gone missing in the last few months.
“Take a deep breath. When was the last time you saw it?”

Panic was starting to rise, her throat constricting and an overwhelming sense of grief washing over her. Bella clutched her chest in an effort to slow her heartrate which had been steadily climbing since she realized it was missing. Claire sat her stuff down and turned to her, telling her to take a deep breath. Bella did as she said, breathing in deeply through her nose and then slowly out of her mouth. She took another and she could feel herself starting to calm down. There was still that sense of urgency, but her mind was clearer than it had been. The young witch offered her friend a small smile of thanks and took one more look around. "It was on my nightstand last night," she said, moving back to it and opening the drawer to find nothing but rolled up parchment. "I was reading it before I fell asleep and I don't -" she checked under her pillow, "I don't remember seeing it this morning."

There was no way Claire could allow herself to walk away from this situation. This was literally her job as prefect and she had to admit she had a soft spot for Bella. She was the only one who minded her own business and Claire appreciated that.
“Did you check behind your night stand?”
Bella seemed to calm down a bit and Claire stepped past her to move it herself. She got down on her knees and peered behind the crack between the wall and night stand, using her wand to illuminate the cramped space. She spotted something but when she reached for it, it was soft and small. Claire pulled her hand back and presented Bella with a navy blue scrunchie.
Even though the other brunette wasn’t hyperventilating, it didn’t mean she wasn’t on the verge of a panic attack. Claire had gone through something similar a few weeks before. Her great grandmother’s bracelet had gone missing. And even though this Claire never met that Claire, it still had sentimental value. It still hadn’t turned up and she hoped that wouldn’t be the case for Bella.
“Maybe Laurie or Dot accidentally moved it and forgot to tell you?”

There was a gaping hole inside her that ached when she discovered it was missing. This wasn't something that had value to anyone but herself, so she couldn't imagine that someone had run off with it. Or at least she hoped no one would be so heartless as to take something so personal. It couldn't have been any of her dorm mates, she was certain of that, but could it have been another witch or even a wizard who snuck in here? No, Bella didn't think that was possible. She watched anxiously as Claire looked behind her nightstand, her heart starting to pick up speed when she pulled out a scrunchie. Bella had been looking for that, but that was so low on her priority list that she had forgotten about it weeks ago.
The girl chewed nervously on her bottom lip as Claire asked if one of their other dorm mates might have moved it. "I don't think so," she started. "Laurie knows what that means to me and Dot doesn't usually come around my corner." All of a sudden, a thought came to her and her eyes widened. "An owl flew in a few weeks ago and tore up one of Laurie's books. Do you think it's possible an owl took it?" Perhaps it was farfetched, but what other ideas did she have? She's already torn apart the room in search of it.

That seemed unlikely too. Laurie’s book being destroyed by a maniacal owl was more like a freak accident. Someone had left a window open and the rest was history. Claire had taken it upon herself to check the windows were locked every night since.
“No,” she replied flatly. What was the point of indulging her theory?
She stood there, her arms crossed over her chest, and then something rang in the back of her mind. Without a word she walked over to her bed, retrieved a small notebook from her bag and flipped through it. Her eyes scanned over the notes she’d taken during the last prefects meeting. The Slytherin prefect mentioned someone had sticky fingers over in the dungeons because Ivy Lennox had complained about multiple items disappearing from her room, too.
“Who else knows about the journal?” Of course she didn’t mention the fact that Ivy was experiencing the same thing because it was most likely a coincidence. Besides, who had excess to both the dungeons and the tower?

She nodded solemnly. It didn't seem plausible, but Bella was a little desperate for an answer. It just wasn't something that she would lose. She had a few of her mother's belongings that she kept close to her heart... oh! She hadn't thought to check the rest. As Claire moved to her bed, Bella moved to her trunk. While she had been sifting through it, she didn't think to double check and see if her mother's blanket and telescope were still there. She dug through it frantically, barely registering Claire's question as she did. "I'm not sure," she said. "Laurie knows for sure, but I'm not exactly secretive about my mother." After a few moments, she came back up with tears spilling over. "My mother's blanket and telescope are missing as well." She turned to Claire, sniffling. "I can't - why would they just be gone?"
