There was a break in the cold weather, and Poppy was taking full advantage of it. The red head had wandered down to the Black Lake for a myriad of activities. The first was to write her father a letter. Her handwriting was an absolute mess as she scribbled out what she'd been up to lately. The letter contained a mixture of smiley faces and hearts every few sentences. She told him about how she and Parker had stuffed themselves silly with strawberry ice cream. She'd told him of the ghost story Headless Nick had spooked them all with in Gryffindor Commons. She'd even informed him of her two weeks of detention with Professor Greer, which had been a total drag, but she'd played with a Pygmy Puff when the woman hadn't been eyeing her like a hawk. It was one of her favorite creatures. When her letter was finished, she left it on her satchel to allow the ink to dry.
With a fist full of smooth stones in her hand, she went about skipping stones across the lake. Other students were wandering around the shore, but Poppy ignored them. She was hardly bothered by others unless she had a bone to pick with them. After she'd become bored with skipping rocks, she went about her way walking the shore until the sound of laughter reached her ears. The fourth year raised her head. That laugh sounded oddly familiar. She spotted Laurie Greer and her good mood was instantly ruined. Poppy marched towards the Ravenclaw, ignoring the boy that was with her.
"Greer."

After the blizzard, it seemed like Hogwarts was heading into a winter apocalypse-- but thankfully, the weather started looking up. The snow had all but melted and despite the frozen ground, Hogwarts and her surrounding grounds were looking rather scenic on that beautiful Friday afternoon. Laurie was happy-- strangely happy. The past two weeks had throw her for a loop but now things were looking up. She had new friends, her sister was back in her life, quidditch was going EXCELLENT! She couldn't complain about anyone-- except maybe the finch that tried swooping down on her the other day. But even that couldn't make her mood sour.
Despite the cold, she was insulated and warm, wrapped up in a scarf and a coat, sitting on the shore next to Nathaniel. She swore, in the past hour they'd talked about a million things. He was just.. easy to talk to. It was strange. Laurie never made friends with boys like this, and certainly not Nathaniel James. "I swear to Merlin that's what happened!" She explained, a laugh rolling from her chest as she sat up on her knees, pressing into the rocky shore. "Every year they throw the same prank wars-- It's horrible and I refuse to participate but they swear each year the I will. I basically have to lock myself in the dorm to avoid their torment-- or what they call pranks." She smiled, letting out a soft sigh as she settled back in. "I'm glad we don't have quidditch today..." She said, glancing his way as her hand ran over the rocks. She'd been feeling different in the past few days, but was convinced it was probably a cold or something.
Furrowing her brows at the harsh footsteps approaching, she turned, eyebrows furrowing at the sight of Poppy Fucking Carmichael. Tragic middle name, Laurie thought when she'd first introduced herself. Pushing herself up to a quick stand, she felt her heart leap. She didn't want a fight. She really didn't. Or to be thrown in the lake. Either of those things sounded like a bummer. "Poppy." She repeated, taking a step back. "What can I do for you?" She asked, offering a soft smile. Kill them with kindness, Laurie thought, but then pushed it away. Poppy might actually kill someone, but definitely not with kindness.

Poppy found it amusing how quickly Laurie had gotten to her feet. Did the older girl think Poppy was going to leave a boot imprint on her face? She was probably right in taking such precautions. Laurie took a step back, and Poppy took two steps forward. "Where ya going, Greer? You're not scared are you?" She cast a wicked smile at the other girl. "It's not wise to show fear in front of a predator. Makes for a bad day." She rocked back and forth, watching that smile on Greer's face. She'd like to wipe it away. "We didn't get to finish our little talk," she said calmly. "I know it's been over two weeks since we talked, but your sister had my hands tied with detention." Her icy blue eyes held a fair amount of annoyance at remembering those two weeks spent with Professor Elsie Greer. "I bet you were hoping they'd expel me." She stopped rocking, her hands clasped in front of her. "Or maybe you'd just forgotten completely." The Gryffindor hadn't so much as raised her voice, which in itself should have been a key indicator that something was seriously wrong. "I sort of did too for a while," she admitted. "But then I was hanging out over there," she said as she pointed to where her things were, "And I heard you laugh. That's when I remembered our little chat," she said, tapping her temple. "Now I know you weren't laughing at me just now. You probably didn't even know I was down here, but I gotta say Laurie, I really hate your laugh."

Nate was having the time of his life with Laurie by the lake, just chatting it up and laughing with her. The boy fully understood his feelings for his housemate and teammate, but he wasn't acting on anything. Most would wonder why Nathaniel James, the ladies man of Hogwarts, wasn't acting on actual feelings for another girl, but the truth was that he didn't want to rush into anything. He was enjoying being her friend more than any desire he had for more. Nate was content living his life like he had been. Laurie was telling him about the pranksters and he couldn't help but laugh out loud, the boy clutching his stomach as the laughter overtook him. Trying to imagine Laurie Greer participating in any prank was hilarious to him and, of course, her delivery had him in stitches. He was wiping tears from his eyes when they were approached by one particularly angry Gryffindor. Well, he should say Laurie was approached because Poppy was decidedly ignoring his presence. That kind of pissed him off.
The raven stood when his friend did, his hand hovering by her arm in case Poppy made a move to hurt her. He'd let Laurie handle it before he stepped in, but he wasn't about to sit by again as she got plummeted by a fourteen year old. His blue eyes watched carefully as the other redhead started to speak, her voice calm but dripping with venom. Nate grasped Laurie's arm then, letting her know he was still here and willing to step in should he need to. It's not that he didn't think she could handle herself, but he felt a sort of protectiveness toward the witch. She was his friend and no one was going to threaten his friends in front of him. Not on his watch. He listened as Poppy spoke, a deep frown marring his features as she continued. There was a sense of danger with her words that had him bristling in response. When the younger witch finished speaking, he stepped forward, placing his body between the two of them. "I think you've said enough. Why don't you go back to whatever it was you were doing and leave us alone, yeah?" His cerulean gaze flashed dangerously, warning the girl to back the fuck off.

"No--I'm not scared." Laurie said unconvincingly, but as Poppy stepped forward, and she took a step backwards, she knew Poppy didn't believe her. In truth, she was fucking horrified of Poppy. The two girls stood on even footing, but Poppy seemed daunting and presented herself with the confidence of a 6'7" criminal. Why was she intimidated by a fourteen year old? Maybe because said fourteen year old had threatened to permanently disfigure her and hated her guts! "I didn't want you to--" She was cut off, biting her tongue as Poppy continued. Poppy had it all wrong! Laurie didn't want any trouble with her-- in fact, Laurie had been hoping Poppy was just upset or something. Not that the two girls could be friends, but she didn't wish ill on Poppy. Similarly to her sister, she just wanted Poppy to not be so... punchy. Poppy continued and Laurie's gaze hardened, glancing between the other red head and Nate, who still remained seated on the shore. "Listen Poppy," She took a hesitant step forward. "Like I told you the other week, I don't want trouble with you. I'm sorry you hate my laugh but--" She swallowed her nerves, straightening her shoulders out. "But I'm not going to stop laughing just because you don't like it. I really don't know what I did to you, but I'm not my sister and I would very much appreciate if you separated us in your mind. Please don't hit me again-- there's really no reason for that in the first place. Now if you could just leave us alone, everything would be awesome and fun and amazing. And no one would get detention again." She smiled nervously, hoping the Gryffindor hadn't misinterpreted her words again. Laurie was trying to be incredible forward-- she didn't want trouble. Thankfully, Nate was on her side and wouldn't sit idly by as Poppy verbally berated her. She sent him a look of gratitude and tried to ignore the strange feeling that blossomed in her chest. It was probably the cold again.

The guy stood up, but Poppy continued to ignore him. She wasn't here for lover boy. She was here for the girl that he was so desperately trying to look intimidating for. She was willing to bet he was all bark and no bite. Not that it mattered. So long as he didn't bother her, she wouldn't bother him. It seemed like a fair trade. She cracked another smile as Laurie tried to claim she wasn't scared. "Is that why your voice is trembling," she asked, taking another two steps forward as Laurie tried to back away. "Careful of your footing, Greer, it'd be a shame if you were to trip. You see when a predator is on the hunt, it looks for the weakest prey. A downed animal is easy pickings."
It actually surprised her when Laurie decided to take a step forward. Her brows raised curiously. Was the Ravenclaw actually standing her ground? Poppy could have started bouncing with anticipation, but she remained still; steady like a snake preparing to strike at the first opportunity. Oh, now this was unexpected. Laurie really was standing her ground. She spoke her demands, and Poppy nodded to show she was listening. She could be attentive when she wanted to be. Scratch that, she was attentive so that she could hang onto every little word and twist it into something that would anger her further.
Besides, she was busy trying to process Laurie's words. "No," she finally said. "You don't want to fight because you don't know how to," she told the girl plainly. She was going to say more, but Nate decided to place himself between the two girls. Poppy, standing at a whopping five foot even, looked up at Nate without fear. Her Papa had taught her that the bigger they were, the harder they fell. "I think it's best you sod off," she told the guy. "The ladies are talking." She peered around him to look at Laurie. "I see you've got a pet," she mused. "You think he's going to deter me from having a chat with ya, yeah?" She gave an actual tickled laugh. "You want to call him off before I hurt the both of ya? I think I might start with you first, just so he can watch helplessly as I finish what I started." Poppy had come willing to chat, just like before, but Nate had gone and stuck his nose where it didn't belong. Now she was annoyed, and an annoyed Poppy didn't care for mindless chatter.
She sidestepped Nate and swung at Laurie. All bets were off.

Nathaniel was fuming. This little punk was going to talk to Laurie like that and think she's just going to get away with it? He wasn't about to sit idly by while she abused her to her face. It was a shame he was somewhat respectable and wouldn't hit a girl because he could have decked her right then and there. His jaw was working and his eyes were hard and piercing as he stared holes into her. The ladies were talking, as if this brat could ever think of herself as a lady. His chest puffed out as she continued to talk to Laurie as if he wasn't even there, the white hot anger bubbling up inside of him. Nate watched and waited for her to make her move, and when she tried to sidestep him, he moved to block her path, his hand coming up to grab her fist tightly in his grasp as she tried to swing. "I think you need to cool the fuck off," he said in a dangerously low voice. As if he'd just sit here and watch this happen. Not on his fucking watch.

Poppy could insult Laurie all she wanted-- she could take the harsh words of a mean fourteen year old, even if they hurt, but the minute she started throwing rude remarks and insults Nate's way, she tensed up. It was the same as when Poppy started spilling harsh things about her sister-- why would Poppy be so... so... awful?! Laurie simply didn't understand it! No one wanted to fight Poppy, so why did the arsehole of a Gryffindor keep trying to pick them. She contemplated for a second what it would be like to but Poppy in her place and what it would take-- she had a feeling whatever anyone did would be met with stubbornness and a punch to the face. "He's not a dog, Poppy." Laurie stated lowly, fists clenching softly. She sure didn't like the way Poppy was talking at or about Nate. Frowning at her threat-- well, with Poppy, it was a promise-- she shook her head. "Poppy, you're not going to hurt anyone. There's no reason for that..." Despite feeling intimidated, deescalating the situation felt like the best thing in the moment. If they could flag a prefect over or a Professor-- but none were in sight and it would take a while once the fighting started to wave one over, she thought.
Nate stepped in between she and Poppy and Laurie tensed, knowing that the witch wouldn't like that at all. Poppy was quick, moving around with a fist that looked like it was going to hurt her face pretty bad-- eyes squeezed shut, body tense and uncomfortable but a punch never hit her. Eyes fluttering open, Nate grabbed Poppy's fist, looking... well, certainly looking like nothing she'd ever seen of him. She let out a small breath of relief, eyes wide at the situation. "I think we call just need to calm down..." Laurie said, taking a step to the other side of Nate, as if she were about to make a run to get help from an adult if Poppy kept going on like this.

At no point did it register in the younger girl's mind that she was outnumbered. If Nate and Laurie had put their heads together, they could have taken her on and won. Instead, Nate stood towering over her like some giant beanstalk waiting to be cut down while Laurie cowered in fear. Maybe if Laurie had continued to hold her head high and showed a little more assertiveness, Poppy would have left her be. Poppy could respect someone willing to throw it all away. Still, she kept her eye on Nate. He was fuming and she was willing to continue to poke the bear. It was always a personal favorite of hers to snap people out. What would make him tick until he finally went boom.
Laurie tried to defend him, claiming he wasn't a dog. "I never said he was. I said pet," she declared in a singsong voice. It irritated her that Laurie was so determined to turn this situation around without violence. Poppy thrived off of violence, and this girl wanted to extinguish her flame. Poppy hated her for it. Laurie pranced around like she was oh so innocent. Wouldn't it be nice to get some dirt on her and air it out to the whole school. She could worry about it later once she'd finished tearing Laurie limb from limb.
Blue eyes narrowed when her fist was caught in Nate's grip. The red head identified him as a threat for the first time since she'd arrived. She tried to pull back, but she was stuck. What had her father taught her about sticky situations? 'Don't panic. Find a weak point in your opponent's defense and give them everything you've got. Once they're down, make sure they stay that way. You don't fight to win, Poppy. You fight to survive.' Poppy remembered her father's words as if he'd spoken them to her yesterday. She met Nate's gaze, and without so much as batting an eye, she brought her right foot up as hard she could between his legs. Rearing her left arm back, she swung it forward towards his face. She wanted to leave a nice shiner as a reminder of the time he decided to try and interfere with her business.

He was barely registering Laurie's words, but he noticed when she moved to stand beside him. Nate wanted to tell her to get back, but his attention was focused entirely on Poppy. The girl tried to pull her fist back and he gripped it more tightly, letting her know that he was not tolerating any of her shit. She stared up at him and before he could tell her to back off again, she had kicked him square in the family jewels. Sharp pain erupted in his core and his stomach turned with it. His knees buckled and he fell down, his hands going to clutch himself. His ears were ringing as the waves of pain washed over him. Then, while he was down, Poppy swung and her fist connected with his jaw. A low groan fell out of him, a searing pain spreading along the side of his face and he could feel a wetness in his mouth, tasting something metallic. He brought a hand up to his lip and then held it out, his head spinning when he saw the bright red blood on his fingertips. Nate lifted his gaze to look at the bitch, his eyes flashing dangerously. What he wouldn't give to be able to put this girl in her place once and for all.

After a few tumultuous weeks, Rose had finally had the sense kicked into her. She had known deep down that she wanted to be with Finch, but it took him avoiding her and Liam Sagewater's words of wisdom to get her to admit to it. The girl was grateful she wasn't too late and, for the first time in her entire life, she had entered her first real relationship. It was strange, but a good strange. She had some practice during their two week bubble Christmas break and all Rose had done was gone back to that. She no longer cared if people saw her with Finch because it no longer mattered. He was hers and she was his and the entire school knew it. It was... rather freeing, if she was being honest. She could love him the way she wanted to without this crippling fear overtaking her. Things were good for the first time in literal weeks.
The weather had let up a bit, the air a lot warmer than it had been with all the snowstorms, and Rose was taking advantage of it. The redhead was cuddled up with Finch on the shore of the Black Lake, laughing and kissing him as they had their own little picnic. Her heart had never felt so full. She was leaning in when she heard some kind of commotion a ways down the shore. Her head turned toward the sound and she saw that brat Poppy Carmichael with Nate and Laurie. Her manicured brows furrowed and she tapped Finch to get his attention. Something was going on. Rose extracted herself from her boyfriend and stood, her hand finding his as they slowly made their way over.
She saw when Poppy swung and Nate caught her fist, a bit of pride spreading through her chest for her friend, but then the girl kicked him between the legs and he went down, Poppy swinging and punching him square in the jaw. Anger surged inside Rose and she let go of Finch's hand to stomp her way over. "HEY!" she hissed as she lunged forward to grab Poppy by her hair, yanking her backwards. Using her grip on her, Rose turned Poppy's head so she could see the sickly sweet smile on her face. "Poppy Carmichael," she cooed, her voice dripping with venom. "How about you leave my friends the fuck alone, yeah?" Without waiting for a response, Rose drew back and swung her fist, aiming directly for Poppy's face.

She could have retreated from the pain, but instead, she let it enrage her. It fueled the fire beneath her, and she struck out with precision, bringing the Ravenclaw to his knees. Nobody, absolutely nobody hurt Poppy Carmichael and got away with it unscathed. She didn't care if Nate was twice her size, she'd made him regret every second of his existence. A twisted smile came across her lips as he fist made contact with his jaw. Damn it hurt, but she didn't care. Nathaniel James would forever remember this moment. This was a victory for the ages. She might even leave Laurie alone so the girl could break down and apologize for dragging her friend into this mess. It would be pleasing to watch. Poppy unleashed a laugh as she spotted Nate glaring at her. "Hmm, you haven't had enough," she asked, rearing her leg back to finish the job. She'd have done the same to Poppy on the stairs had Professor Cloud Nine not shown up.
Poppy was ready for the follow through, but Rose Kelly came upon her. Poppy felt the girl take hold of her air, yanking her back with such force that the younger Gryffindor lost her balance. She had no choice but to grab at Rose's wrist to keep herself upright. Her head was forced up to look at Rose, and her fellow Gryffindor hit her in the face. Pain exploded in her face, blood rushing from her nose and mouth. Poppy had mixed feelings of betrayal. Three on one was a nasty fight, but she wouldn't just roll over and accept defeat. If they needed all hands on deck to take her down, so be it. Fuel her ego!
"Fuck you, you pretentious bitch," Poppy raged. She would just have to lose a handful of hair because staying this close to Rose was dangerous. She yanked her head back and kicked out with her left leg, hoping to catch the girl in her thigh. She needed space to recover. She needed space to recalculate the situation. Then she'd tear them all to pieces.

Laurie's head was spinning from all the action-- one moment she and Nathaniel were sharing a moment by the lake, a respite from training and classes and the normal chaos of their lives-- and now she was kneeling down to check if he was okay. Poppy Carmichael was a tornado that Laurie just couldn't seem to escape from. She was seriously getting fed up with Poppy's antics and she needed to figure out some way to put a stop to this madness! She hadn't even done anything wrong to Poppy and it seemed like the little Gryffindor's life goal was to make Laurie MISERABLE! "Nate!" She exclaimed, going down to one knee with wide eyes. Blood slowly seeped from the corner of her mouth and she felt anger bubble inside her. "Are you okay?" She asked quickly, worry rising in her voice as she cupped his cheek and wiped away the blood-- it didn't help, only stain her thumb with crimson. "Just... sit tight. Okay? I'm going to take care of this..." She murmured, giving his shoulder a quick squeeze as she helped him to sit up.
Rolling her sleeves up, she clenched her fist. Laurie had never been in fight, nor did she have the desire to get in one. But it was serious time. Poppy needed to learn that she couldn't just run over whoever she wanted because she could pack a punch. Before she could enact whatever plan she'd come up with, another red head that wanted Laurie done with appeared on the horizon. Rose. It was like a convention of aggressive red haired Gryffindor's was just a hop and a skip over from where Nate and Laurie were hanging out. Rose was quick to anger and quick to action, Laurie could hardly process what had happened when Rose had Poppy by her hair. Friends? Friends...? Okay, she could deal with that. For now, she needed to break this fight up before Poppy and Rose killed each other.
"Let's just.. Calm down, okay!?" Laurie said, approaching both of the girls like they were rabid dogs. "I don't think this is necessary! At all!" Laurie was out of breath and she felt panicked, like if this continued for one second longer she was going to lose her mind of the Headmistress was going to expel all of them in a second. "Shit.. Shit.. Shit.." She murmured to herself as Poppy went to kick Rose. Her hands were numb and her heart was pounding but adrenaline rushed through her veins and in an instance she was tackling Poppy to the ground as gently as she could, trying not to get hurt in the process. With Poppy to the ground, Laurie quickly scrambled off the younger girl, chest heaving up and down. "Poppy... Just... Stop fighting for one fucking second!" Laurie yelled at the lion.

The pain was still rolling over him in waves and his stomach was still turning from getting kicked where the sun don't shine. His icy eyes, though, were fixed on Poppy's face. He stared daggers into her and a deep scowl marred his handsome features as she threatened to hurt him more. Nate was helpless in front of her and he hated that more than anything. He'd never hit a girl, but what he wouldn't give to compromise his ideals and beat the ever-living snot out of this brat... Laurie grounded him to the present with her hand gently cupping his cheek and he tore his gaze away from the Gryffindor to look upon his friend's worried face. His hand came up to rest against hers and he stared at her with wide eyes as she wiped the blood from his lip. She asked him if he was okay and he couldn't get the words out of his mouth. He'd be fine. It didn't matter how many times Poppy hit him, he'd suffer them all to make sure she didn't harm a hair on Laurie's head, but she was standing too soon saying she was going to handle this. Nathaniel moved to grab her wrist and tell her not to, but she was gone before he could.
He watched as the scene unfolded before him. Rose had snatched Poppy back by the hair and decked her in the face, Laurie was standing by trying to calm everyone down, and Nate just wanted to move. But he just couldn't. His groin and his jaw were throbbing and he felt like he was going to be sick all over this shore, but when Laurie tackled Poppy to the ground, he found the courage to rise and rush to her. She was already standing by the time he reached her and, without hesitation, he pulled her into his arms. He gave no thought to the action or who was around, he just held her tightly against his chest with his hand coming to rest on the back of her head. He just wanted to protect her from Poppy's wrath.

Pain seared along her knuckles as her fist made contact with Poppy's face, but it didn't matter in the least to Rose because the satisfaction of landing her blow overpowered the sensation. No one, and I mean no one, was going to abuse her friends in front of her. Rose might not be a mean girl like Ivy capable of throwing insults back and forth, but she had her fists and she had her wand to defend herself and those close to her. Of course, she preferred to use her wand - she couldn't afford to damage her pretty hands - but something about seeing Poppy hurt Nate like that lit a fiendish fire within her. Poppy screamed at her and yanked her head from her grasp. The girl moved to kick her, but Rose was ready for it. She knocked her foot aside with the side of her thigh, but was prevented from acting further by Laurie Greer literally tackling Poppy to the ground. Rose stepped back and watched with her mouth hung open. Did that really just happen? She never would have guessed the raven was capable of that. Rose respected her more at that moment, the feeling only intensifying as she yelled at her. Nathaniel took Laurie in his arms and Rose lightly kicked Poppy while she was down. "How about you just fuck off now before a professor comes down here?" She could see Professor Walker in the distance and it was only a matter of time before she realized what was happening.
