Liam had been hard at work since his chat with Nate. That had been a week ago. He couldn't deny that this entire plan could have been set in motion two days prior, but his nerves had gotten the better of him. In that timeframe, Liam had actively avoided the Astronomy Tower during the evening hours. He didn't want to run into Bella by accident. Mainly because he didn't think he could hold water now that Nate had opened his eyes to the fact that Liam and Bella may have been tiptoeing around their feelings for Merlin knew how long. The second part was being stressed. He wanted this to be perfect, hence he'd enlisted the help of several individuals in secrecy. The first being Fiona Haze of the Knitting Club and Blaise Grantham of the Astronomy Club. He'd gotten the two together and sworn them to secrecy. The idea was to have Blaise guide Fiona in making a blanket with the constellations of Perseus and Andromeda. They were Bella's favorites. His peers had not let him down. Blaise was an expert and had offered up the idea of Fiona knitting the individual stars, but also an outline of the figures for those who weren't familiar. The accuracy and detail of the finished result were to Liam's satisfaction, and he compensated them with their requested items.
The next step was a bit harder. Liam had to find someone who knew how to paint. Apparently, Gryffindor had an art club, so that was where he'd sought out his help. Salley Stewart drove a hard bargain, but they'd come to an agreement in the end. He'd had to sit with her for hours almost every evening, giving details on what he wanted painted. At one point she'd asked if he was going overboard, and he'd had to wallow in embarrassment. The painting was from memory of the time he and Bella had discussed Andromeda and Perseus. She'd rested her cheek against her knee, her chocolate eyes watchful, and he'd been...starstruck as corny as it sounded. Even Salley's insistence on details couldn't spoil the moment that was engrained in his soul. The finished product was worth it. Salley was nosey and she'd made him question his whole existence, but she did amazing work.
The final step was a little more complicated. How did he get Bella to the Astronomy Tower? That's where the two days of delay had come in. He could pretend to give her study notes with a letter slipped in between the pages. He could write her an owl. He could just tell her. All of the overthinking had led him to lay in bed like a sick puppy for half an afternoon. For a moment he'd considered asking Nate, and then trashed that idea as soon as it came. This was Nate's fault to begin with. Still, the delay worked in his favor. There so happened to be a meteor shower tonight. Liam had dragged himself to the Great Hall during breakfast and stopped by Bella long enough to say good morning and inform her of said meteor shower, in case she didn't know. He doubted she didn't, but it was an implied invitation. That's the best she'd get out of him. He'd then disappeared to the opposite end of the table to sit with his friends. Before the night grew too dark, he raided the Kitchens.
The setup was the blanket placed for them to sit, the canvas painting was wrapped and laying off to the side, the telescope was set up and ready for viewing after the meteor shower, and of course hot chocolate and a variety of snacks. Liam let out a shaky breath. Maybe he should have had Nate come up and see if this was 'romantic' enough. Maybe this was too much. It was too late now, there was no turning back. He tried not to pace. To ensure as much, he stood looking up at the night sky. Everything was going to be just fine. What could possibly go wrong?

After her conversation with Laurie, Bella had been giving talking to Liam a lot of thought. Instead of going to the observatory like she normally did, the dark haired raven avoided it and stayed in her dorm. When she wasn't in class, she was lying on her bed staring at the ceiling, her thoughts swirling around in her mind. She did her best to avoid Liam during her classes, sticking by Laurie's side. It wasn't like she wanted to avoid him, it was just... she didn't know what to say. Laurie told her she didn't have to say anything if she didn't want to, but a part of her did. It was just taking a long time for her to muster enough courage to do it. Her friend was understanding of her position and she stayed true to her word. Perhaps her time with Nathaniel was changing her. Bella didn't give it much thought because she had other things filtering through her brain.
After about a week of this, Bella found herself determined to tell him how she felt. It was just a matter of when and how. The young witch was thinking on it during breakfast when Liam approached her. Her heart had sputtered in her chest when he told her good morning, Bells repeating it back to him with her face flushed. He mentioned the meteor shower tonight, something that she had completely forgotten about with everything going on, and just like that he was gone. Bella was left with her body tingling at his invitation, ignoring Laurie's pointed stare. This was... actually perfect. But, Merlin, was she nervous. For the rest of her day, butterflies swarmed in her belly and she was having trouble eating thanks to her anxiety. She snuck glances at Liam all day until dinner was over and the girls went back to their dorm to get ready.
She didn't want to go see him in her robes so her friend helped her pick out the right outfit to wear. There was this strange lightness bubbling up inside her as she stood in front of the floor length mirror, inspecting her appearance. The nerves were fluttering inside her, her heart crawling in her throat as the anticipation thrummed through her veins. There was a small part of her that wanted to back out and just hide in their dorm for the rest of the night, but she couldn't miss this opportunity. Even if she lost her courage to say anything, seeing the meteor shower with him sounded like a dream come true. Before she left, she grabbed a copy of one of her favorite books and hugged Laurie. "Wish me luck," she said to her just before she left to head to the Astronomy tower.
Her heart was pounding loudly in her ears as she climbed the expansive staircase leading to the observatory. It felt like there were a million butterflies swarming inside her as she neared the top. Would he already be there? If he wasn't, would it be too late to go back? So many questions were swirling around in her head, making her feel dizzy. She managed to get a handle on it by the time she reached the top of the staircase, her gaze lifting from the ground before her to rest on the figure of Liam Sagewater gazing up at the stars. For a moment, she just stood there watching him. There was that lightness again, filling her chest and making her feel like she was floating. This was it. She could do this. Bella stepped forward. "Liam," she greeted him warmly, crossing to him in a few strides. "I have something I want to-" she paused, her eyes taking in the setup. She saw the blanket first, images of Perseus and Andromeda staring back at her. Then the snacks and hot chocolate and telescope. Then the wrapped present. Heat crawled up her neck to settle on her face, dusting her cheekbones with a soft, rosy hue. "-tell you," she finished quietly, her gaze snapping up to meet him. "What is all of this?"

Liam turned as Bella greeted him, a smile appearing on his face. When he'd been oblivious to the idea that either of them held feelings for one another, acting casual hadn't been a problem. Now it felt like some internal battle that he was on the verge of losing. "Good evening, Bella." If he could default to mannerisms, he'd be fine. Liam suddenly felt silly for all of this. He should have ignored Nate and just invited her up for the meteor shower as a friend. Not because he had ulterior motives. She started speaking, and the knot of nervousness that was twisting in the pit of his stomach loosened. Maybe he could get his thoughts in order while she spoke. Hah! Jokes on him, she wanted to know what all of this was. Liam glanced down at the blanket, his expression going blank.
There was no way he could come up with a lie quick enough to save himself from this situation he'd placed himself in. No, it was all or nothing now. He swallowed, his throat feeling extra dry. All of this work, and he hadn't even rehearsed what he'd say. Smooth move Liam Sagewater. He raised his gaze back to hers. He had suddenly forgotten the English language. That tiny voice in the back of his head was whispering, 'What could possibly go wrong? Hmm, Liam? Nate said nothing and you believed him. Now who's the jackass?' Liam searched her face, checking for signs from Nate's 'How To Know If A Girl Likes You 101' crash course during lunch. She was blushing. That was a good sign, right? Right!?
Liam, words. Use them before she thinks you've gone off the deep end, he told himself. "I um, thought that maybe-" he stopped. He was one hundred percent saying the wrong thing. He needed a redo button. "This is-" How could he manage to stand in front of a whole class and give a flawless presentation, but he couldn't talk to a girl? "I'm sorry," he finally said, rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment, his gaze dropping to the floor as if there was something interesting down there. "I-I really like hanging out with you, and I...I wanted to do something nice," he admitted. Not the whole truth, but not a complete lie either. He was getting there. "And the meteor shower seemed like the perfect time to do it, and it's been a little chilly lately so I figured hot chocolate would keep us warm because everyone likes hot chocolate. And I always bring snacks, but I don't really know what you like, because I never asked, and I'm sorry about that too." He was rambling. Merlin, someone save him from himself. He was never going to live this down.

He smiled at her and she could feel her lips pulling into a smile of her own, her heart fluttering in her chest. This was the moment she had been waiting for and she had to get the words out before she lost all her courage. But when she saw what he had setup, she faltered. Bella didn't understand what this was about, but her heartbeat quickened as she took everything in. This felt... more special than the other times they had met up. Her gaze kept pulling to the blanket that was laid out, Perseus and Andromeda stitched together in the stars and she wondered if he had had it made. What did that mean exactly? She asked him, but he stared at her in silence for several moments. Bella watched him carefully, anticipation flooding through her as her brain started to put it all together. Did he... was this...?
Liam opened his mouth and words started to pour out, Bella standing there surprised as he struggled to put a sentence together. He had never been at a loss for words before and she was confused. Laurie's words came back to her at that moment as she watched him, Liam adverting his gaze and stumbling out that he liked hanging out with her. What if he liked her, too? she had said. Bella's eyes widened a bit, that lightness bubbling up in her chest again. He started to ramble and she couldn't help but smile softly as he did. She always found it cute when he went on like this, but she could tell he was nervous. She was nervous, too, but the nerves started to dissipate as she stood there listening to him. Was it possible that he felt the same way? For the first time, she started to truly hope.
She reached out to grasp his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze and flashing him a kind smile. "Liam," she breathed. "I think it's lovely." Her touch lingered for a moment as she found she didn't want to let go, but she had brought a present of her own. Reluctantly, she let go of him and handed over the book that was tucked in her arms. "For you," she said, another blush rising to her cheeks. "It's a book about Perseus and his adventures. It was one of my favorites growing up and I thought you might like it." Being here with him, seeing the way he was acting, she felt a sense of calm that had escaped her for over a week now. "I..." she started to tell him, but the words died on her lips. You can do this, she told herself. "I-I've been meaning to tell you something, but I'll be honest I don't know where to start..." She was getting nervous again. Warmth flooded her face, but she kept her gaze trained on his face. She couldn't lose her courage now, not when she was so close to telling him. "I don't... I mean... I just - I like hanging out with you, too. A lot. And I wanted... I had hoped..." Her courage was waning and she knew she had to get the words out before it dissipated completely. "I... I... Liam, I - I like you. I mean... I've had a big crush on you for a long time now and I wanted..." The words were out there, but she couldn't get the rest out. Her face was burning at this point and tears had started to well in her eyes. Why was this so difficult? Did he think she was mad? Or stupid? Her stomach twisted as the anxiety gripped her tight and she was worried she had just ruined everything in one fell swoop. The girl covered her face with her hands and shook her head as the embarrassment overcame her. "I've just ruined everything, haven't I?" she managed to get out as she hid behind her hands. This was a terrible idea, wasn't it?

He briefly glanced up, saw her eyes had gotten wide, and his gaze dropped again. Was it shock? Probably, but in what form? Was she happily surprised, or shocked at his audacity? Why'd he have to go and do something fancy. He could have just as easily told her in any of Hogwarts' many corridors. That way he'd feel less hurt and embarrassed if she rejected him. Oh no, what if she felt pressured because he had gone to such great lengths!? The Ravenclaw would have liked to disappear off the face of the earth now. No matter which way he looked at it, this had been a recipe for disaster. Liam was always level headed and collected, but throw a little feeling into the mix and he would shut down. Sweet Merlin, feelings were his kryptonite.
The world stopped on its axis as she took his head. The color rushed to his face. The explosion of feelings came all at once. Liam felt giddy and nauseous all at once. Bella said she thought it was lovely, and the world suddenly better. All of his anxiety melted away with those four words. He'd done good. She released his hand, and he found that he wished she'd held on a bit longer. Her hands were warm and soft. She offered a gift, and he took it without hesitation. The book had sentimental value, and he kicked himself for not thinking of offering up something of the like. "Thank you," he told her. He was going to return his dorm and read it cover to cover, so long as Nate and Finch didn't complain about the light.
Bella had more to say, and he was going to listen. She stumbled over her words, but he didn't interrupt. She kept eye contact, and he gave her props because he couldn't manage as much during his word vomit. The floodgates were open the moment she said she too enjoyed hanging out. Nate was right. Ah, bloody hell, Nate was right! Did this mean he had to tell him? In an instant, none of that mattered, because she let him know she liked him. She had said the words, followed up by admitting she'd had a crush on him for a long time. Guilt washed over him. The feeling worsened as he saw her eyes water. Liam shook his head as she asked if she had ruined everything, but realized she couldn't see him with her face covered.
The darked haired male slowly pulled one hand away from her face. "Not at all," he told her gently. If she could be honest with him, he could do the same. "I like you too, Bella. " He took in a small breath, mustering his courage. "I think you're amazing, and smart, and spending time with you is the highlight of my evenings. I actually put this all together so I could tell you as much," he admitted with a sheepish smile. "I wanted it to be special, but I definitely dropped the ball." He gave a small sigh. "Sorry about that." He nodded towards the blanket. "That's yours by the way. I know how much you like Perseus and Andromeda, so I had it made." Look, he knew how to use words now. "And I have something else for you if you want it."

For a moment, Bella considered running back to her dorm and hiding beneath her bedcovers for the rest of her life. She couldn’t believe she had just done that! This was all Laurie’s fault. Bella inwardly sighed - she couldn’t blame her friend, this was on her alone. Laurie may have planted the seed, but Bella was the one who watered it. She was getting ready to apologize to him when he tenderly took one of her hands and removed it from her face. Her other hand fell as he did and she slowly opened her eyes to look at him. There was a soft look in his eye that comforted her, his reassurance that she didn’t ruin anything had her heart speeding up. Did that mean…? His next words reached her ears and her breath hitched in her chest, a thousand butterflies fluttering around inside her. He liked her. She couldn’t help the way her eyes watered as the joy washed over her. He told her he did all of this to tell her and she let out a happy laugh, the tears bubbling over her waterline. Bella wiped them away with a smile. The blanket was for her, something he had specially made, and her heart swelled. “That is so incredibly sweet of you.”
“And I have something else for you if you want it.”
Her chocolate eyes widened excitedly and she offered him an eager nod. She looked over at the wrapped present. “Is that it?” she asked him. Bella moved to sit down on the blanket. Glancing over at Liam, she gestured toward it. “May I?” Assuming he said yes, Bella reached to grab it and pull it toward herself. It was surprisingly light for how large it was and Bella wondered what it could be. She carefully removed the wrapping paper and she let out a loud gasp as she laid her eyes on the most beautiful painting she had ever seen. Her hand came to her chest as she was overcome with emotion, more tears starting to well in her eyes. She looked up at Liam and smiled softly. “This is beautiful. Was this from memory?” It had to have been. The meaning was not lost on her. He had committed every detail of that moment to memory and had it brought to life on canvas. “I - this is the most romantic thing ever,” she said with a light laugh. Her gaze flickered back to the painting, her fingers running over her painted face. So this is how he sees her? She had never felt… more beautiful. “Liam, thank you.” Bella raised her gaze to look him in the eyes, her lips parted. She reached out to hold his hand in hers, her thumb sweeping along his skin. Before she could second guess herself, Bella leaned forward to press a soft kiss to his cheek. When she pulled back, her face was flushed and she had a bright smile on her lips.

Liam was a bit confused. Bella was laughing and crying at the same time. Talk about mixed signals. Still, the moment remained pure as she wiped those tears away and offered him another smile. "I was kind of worried I had overdone it," he admitted, finding it easier to have a conversation now that he'd spilled his guts to her without being rejected. He gave a small nod as she asked if the wrapped present was her second gift in question. "Go ahead," he told her. It wouldn't be much of a gift if she didn't open it. He hadn't even realized he was holding his breath until she spoke again. Liam had the modesty to look embarrassed. "Yes," he answered. It took all he had not to explain why he'd chosen that one particular moment. The simple answer was that she'd left him speechless that evening, but he could go into full detail on how and why. He opted to keep his mouth shut. Brownie points to him and his newfound self control. He was admittedly glad she liked the painting; it made it all the more worth dealing with Salley Stewart. He would be sure to thank her again when he saw her. Bella thanked him, but he couldn't accept it. There was no need to thank him. He'd only done something nice in hopes of winning her favor. He would have protested her thanks, but she'd taken hold of his hand again. Liam was rendered silent, the silence reinforced as she kissed him on the cheek. It had been unexpected, but not unpleasant. He had very much liked it. Her lips were soft, just like her hands, her smile, her laugh. He traced the shape of her lips with his eyes. "You're beautiful Isabella Clarke."

”You didn’t,” she assured him with a warm smile. “I think it’s perfect.” Bella thought it was even more perfect after opening her gift. The painting was such an intimate touch to this whole evening and it made her heart skip beats just thinking about the effort he put into all of this. It made her last minute gift pale in comparison.
Her cheeks were burning as she pulled back from her impromptu kiss, her eyes fixed on his face. She noted the way his eyes focused in on her lips and her breath caught in her chest in anticipation, her own gaze drifting down to his. Bella wanted to lean in and kiss him, but the last of her courage was spent kissing his cheek. Still, her heartbeat quickened at the thought and her thumb continued to sweep along the skin of his hand. Her gaze flicked back up to his eyes as he told her she was beautiful, the color on her face deepening. “You are as well, Liam Sagewater.” Bella scooted closer to him. He’s told her all these wonderful things and all she’s managed to say was that she had a crush on him. Her eyes drifted down to their joined hands. “I think you’re really intelligent. And you’re kind and considerate and I can tell you care about others, even if you don’t want to admit it sometimes.” A soft smile touched her lips as she went on, “I like the way your face lights up when you talk about something you’re really passionate about and I like hearing you talk.” She pressed her ear to her shoulder, a sheepish look about her face. “I really love spending time with you and I get disappointed when you’re not up here. I just - I really do like you and I never would have said something if Laurie never found out because I was too scared of ruining what we have.” She lifted her gaze to look at him then, her head straightening out. “I’m just really happy right now… thanks to you,” she finished with a smile.

It was a good feeling knowing he hadn't completely messed everything up. He was happy to see her happy. To know that he had the ability to make her smile in such a way was rewarding. Liam could feel her thumb making circles against his skin. She moved a little closer, and he could feel the fabric of her clothes brushing his own. His heart was pounding in his chest like a drum. He listened to her speak about the things she liked about him. She'd struck a chord when she mentioned how passionate he got about certain subjects. "That means a lot," was all he would say on the matter. In the past, it had not been a likable feature. How many times had he been told he was far too chatty? Maybe those people were just shallow. The mention of Laurie finding out made him raise a brow, but he quickly mellowed out. That was odd. It couldn't have been a coincidence that Laurie had prompted her, just as Nate had prompted him. The timing had been far too perfect. He would let it be for now. Bella was all he wanted to focus on. "I hope I can continue to make you happy," he responded before closing the gap between the two of them. His lips pressed against hers, kissing her softly. As if on cue, the meteor shower started, and he pulled away slowly, unable to tear his gaze away from her.

Time seemed to slow as she lifted her eyes to meet his gaze. There was that soft look again and her heart skipped a beat when she saw it. Laurie had been right and Bella wondered why she had been so afraid for so long. Being here with Liam, now, under the stars, was more magical than anything she had ever experienced. The young witch smiled at his words, but before she could respond he was leaning in. Her heart fluttered in her chest, a lightness bubbling up within her as she, too, leaned in to meet him. Her hand came to rest upon his chest as their lips met, sliding to his shoulder. His lips were soft against hers, her heartbeat quickening at the feeling. Bella had never been kissed before, so she didn’t know what to expect. Nothing could truly compare to the joy she felt at that moment. The rest of the world had faded away until he started to slowly pull away. Her lashes fluttered as she came to, her eyes wide with wonderment and searching his gaze. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see movement in the skies but her focus was zeroed in on him. “I -” she started to say something, but decided against it as she leaned back in to press another kiss to his lips.

Liam was suspended in time and space. Every physical thing aside from Bella had faded away. She had his undivided attention, ensnaring him by just being. If the world was to come to an end at that very moment, he'd be perfectly okay with it. Kissing her had ended some unspoken journey. He was Perseus and she, his Andromeda. The kiss broke, but he held her close. Meteor shower or not, he wasn't quite ready to let her go. She went to say something but stopped and leaned in for another kiss instead. Liam was curious to know what was on her mind. All the same, he kissed her back all the same. One hand rested gently against the middle of her back, the other lightly upon her cheek. His heart rate was starting to slow, and he could take a moment to truly enjoy the moment. To think, all of this time they had been dancing around their feelings. He didn't care. The wait made it all the more special.

Her lips moved slowly against his, her fingers digging in just slight as she kissed him. This was... more than she could have ever imagined. Her heart was pounding in her chest, that lightness in her making her feel like she was floating in the clouds. Her head started to spin, the only thought running through her mind was the feeling of his hands on her and his lips against hers. It was so magical she could have cried, but of course, she didn't. As the two of them slowly broke apart, she gazed at him with a soft smile pulling at her lips. "I think this is best night of my life," she told him shyly, finishing her thought from earlier. There was a rosy flush to her cheeks as she looked onto him, the meteor shower happening at that moment. Her focus, though, was entirely on him. Her heart swelled with happiness, the rest of the world fading away completely. It was just them, here in this tower, under the stars. Nothing else mattered at that moment. "What else did you have planned for this evening?" she asked curiously. Of course, she still wanted to kiss him, but there was more to this evening than just physical pleasures.

They separated once more and it was like coming up for air. He smiled at her admission that this was the best night of her life. "That makes two of us." He gently ran his thumb over the blush that colored her cheeks. "Hot chocolate," he said with an amused look on his face. "And snacks while we watched the meteor shower." He shook his head lightly. "I didn't have much of a contingency plan for how I'd handle this working out so well." He'd been so focused on the negative that the idea of success had been a fleeting thought. He supposed that they could still enjoy the meteor shower for a moment. The night sky was alight. He glanced up for a moment, taking it all in. "I'm glad I can share this moment with you," he told her.

Bella leaned into his touch as he swept his thumb along her cheek, a contented sigh escaping her. She let out a soft giggle at the look on his face and his plan, or lack of plan, for this evening should things go well. In truth, Bella didn't give much thought to what would happen after she confessed her feelings. Of course, she had worried about what happened if he didn't reciprocate them and she still didn't know what she would have done were that the case. The young witch looked to the sky as he did, her breath catching in her chest at the marvelous sight that awaited them. He told her he was glad to share this moment with her and Bella wrapped her arms around him and tucked her face into his shoulder. "Me, too," she whispered into his shirt, tilting her head so it rested on his cheek. "I feel so stupid for not saying something sooner."

Liam held Bella close as she wrapped her arms around him. He lightly kissed the top of her head, and turned his gaze up to the sky. Despite the fact that he had a feeling this had all been sort of some plan, he was glad Nate had given him a push. To be here with Bella in his arms was a nice feeling. To watch the meteor shower with someone who could appreciate every second was spectacular. The dark haired male blinked when Bella spoke on saying something sooner. He felt a bit guilty, considering he'd thought their encounters had been nothing more than two friends sharing an interest in a similar topic. Still, there had been plenty of nights where he'd come here hoping she'd be here. It got lonely watching the stars by yourself. It got lonely just being by himself in general. He mitigated those feelings by focusing on more concrete things, like studying philosophy and working towards a future career.
Those goals would remain, but Liam would make time for Bella. He was guessing they would spend more time together aside from stargazing in the Astronomy Tower. "Don't feel that way," he told her. "We've had plenty of good nights, but you only get one time to make a real first impression." He smiled down at her. "This just happened to be the perfect night for it."
