Setting: July 2023, Conwy Park
Iola and Maverick were sitting together in the shade watching Eva and Dot play together on the playground. There were many other kids running around, some of them playing with the girls while their own parents looked on. Well, some of the parents. Iola sipped on her tea, her gaze moving over to a group of parents sitting on the park bench with their noses in their phones. “They’re not even paying attention,” she said to him, gesturing with her head.

”Hope none of them get kidnapped. They’d never know it happened.” Maverick murmured, his gaze on Téa heavy. He might be a bit paranoid sure, but if anything ever happened to his daughter he’d never forgive himself. His gaze flickered briefly to Iola, she seemed more tense than usual, but if she wanted to talk about it she would say something. They’d grown in their relationship over the years and at this point he’d consider her a good friend, not just his sister in law. Besides, it was probably just about returning to school. He understood, he was in a similar boat, but not the same.
”What do you think they’re reading?”

Perhaps Iola would have once doubted that there would be a kidnapping in Conwy Valley, but she herself was abducted eight years ago while she was heavily pregnant. And more than ten years prior to that, Death Eaters came and destroyed her family. So, she felt that Maverick’s concern was warranted. After having children of her own, she found herself being a lot more careful when they’re involved.
She was a little tense preparing for the new school year. Iola recently accepted the position of Head of House which meant she had to spend more time at the castle in case of a crisis. She was happy about the opportunity, but a big part of her was sad that she’d miss out on spending time with her family.
“Maybe novellas to help spice up their life,” she replied curiously. Iola glanced over at Maverick. “What do you think?”

”That one,” he said nodding his head towards a blonde woman wearing all athletic gear. ”Definitely a novella.” She looked far too pleased to just be at a park, and honestly maverick was usually pretty good at sussing out who was reading versus who was doom scrolling these days. ”The rest of them I’d argue vary from Facebook to instagram or Twitter.” He explained, leaning back on the park bench as he looked at his daughter playing happily with Eva. He was glad she was happy, these days so long as she was happy he was usually in a good mood as well. He supposed that’s just sort of what happened when your own moods weighed heavily on the people around you.

A soft smirk pulled at her lips, her icy blue gaze flicking over to the blonde. The woman had this intense look in her eye, positively glued to her phone as if her life depended on it. “Poor thing,” she said, amused. Iola didn’t know what it was like to be lonely in your marriage. She hummed softly in response, glancing around at the other parents. “Gabby still hasn’t accepted my friend request,” Iola lamented with a sigh. “I would hope she’d want to see more of her nieces and nephew.” Her younger sister had never forgiven her for joining the Death Eaters, though she was a lot nicer now than she was twelve years ago.
Eva and Tea came running up to them, a warm smile on Iola’s lips as she set down her teacup and spread her arms for her youngest daughter to fall into them. “Mam, can we have a slumber party? Pleeease?” Iola glanced over at Maverick. “If your uncle is okay with it, then yes.”

“Oh I don’t see why not.” Maverick said, leaning back a bit as his daughter crawled into his lap so he could survey her and how dirty her clothes had gotten, she was honestly adorable so he never minded the dirt and grime. She’d all but stolen his heart when she came home with them anyways. ”Italiano, Tèa?” He asked, he liked for her to practice her Italian whenever she could and found that the easiest way was asking her to say a question in the language. She’d gotten much better since he’d started doing it and since he’d begrudgingly asked for advice from his mother who politely informed him that if he’d wanted her to be fluid he should have avoided English all together, which he had rolled his eyes at before she gave the actual advice of them needing to use it more conversationally.
Téa nodded her little head and cleared her throat before speaking “Possiamo dormire da noi?”
Well. That wasn’t quite it but she’d done good considering there wasn’t really a right word for it. ”Festa in pigiama, Sì? Good job piccolo.”

Eva's eyes and face lit up like a firework when her uncle Maverick said it was okay. Iola smiled at the sight of it, pulling her daughter into her lap to wipe a smudge of dirt from her face. She listened as Dot practiced her Italian, glancing over to watch the two of them interact. Eva had been trying her hand at a few words she's heard from her cousin, but Iola was not fluent in the language to know if she was saying anything correctly. Her blue gaze flickered back to her youngest daughter, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. "I'll drop you off at your uncles' after dinner. You'll still need to help clean up before you go," she reminded her gently. Eva blinked up at her mother, a bashful look about her face. "Oh, but I - I have to?" Iola chuckled softly. "Yes, you know this, Eva." The girl groaned, but nodded after a moment, climbing down from her lap to go tug on Dot's clothes. "C'mon! We can play Jedi and Sith!" The dark haired girl picked up a long stick and ran off toward the playground. Iola watched her as she went, smiling to herself. "It always makes me happy to see how close they are," she told Maverick as she picked up her tea and sipped on it.

It always surprised him, to see how far they’d all come. Raising kids… those kids becoming their own small people. It warmed his heart, one that had he been asked fifteen years ago, he’d had said was long cold and dead. “Us too. Never thought ten years ago we’d be having tea watching our children play at a park… judging other parents.” The last part made him laugh. It all felt so painfully normal compared to where they’d all started. “Lucien and Mary are coming back into town soon, they’d like to do dinner with all of us if you’re amenable.” His brother was much more trusting of people, he had enjoyed Iola’s company from the get go, found her snark amusing.

Ten years ago, Iola would have never expected her life to end up in this happy way. Her relationship with Maverick aside - though that was in of itself worth mentioning - there was part of her that maybe felt like she didn't deserve a happy ending. It was a part of her that persisted despite all the work she has done to heal her past trauma. But this was hardly the end of her story, she was only thirty-eight and she had a whole lifetime still to live. There was still a chance that things could go bad and Iola remained prepared for that day to come.
Her lips turned upward into an amused smile as he spoke, a soft chuckle flowing out of her. She never thought they'd be here either. The kids themselves were a big change, but Iola and Maverick overcoming their differences and becoming friends was something she never thought would happen. He mentioned Lucien and Mary coming into town and Iola perked up. She enjoyed Lucien and Mary's company. "Of course," she replied, bringing her teacup to her lips for a sip. "Just let me know when so I can tell Nyle." Work had eased up a bit for him, so she didn't anticipate there being a conflict of schedule. "Maybe I can ask them about Eva's sleeping," she said with a sigh. "She's been having nightmares again."

“Mary would be the one to ask she’s the psychiatric one.” And damn did she show the real practiced use of that degree when him and Lucien had rebuilt their relationship. It was rough going, lots of that was Mavericks fault, the other pieces the misinformation his mother gave him. “What’s she having nightmares about now?” Téa had nightmares of her own from time to time but they didn’t seem nearly as bad as what her cousin went through.

Iola let out a heavy sigh, her bright gaze focused on their children playing on the playground. A couple little boys had found their way over to them and were asking them to play with them. The nightmares started about a year ago and got worse about three months in. Iola started brewing Potion for Dreamless Sleep for her to treat it, but she knew that they would eventually have to get to the source of them to figure it out. After a while, the nightmares disappeared without the need of the potion. It was always the same dream, dementors and black cloaked wizards chasing her out of a never-ending forest. Eva could hear her parents calling for her, but was never able to find them. "More of the same," she said sadly, her blue eyes flicking back over to Maverick. "I've had to start giving her the potion again. She's been sleeping in the bed with us, which helps, but it's certainly not a permanent solution."

Maverick hummed quietly, taking a sip from his drink as he mulled over what Iola was telling him. It was odd the frequency of the nightmares, especially when they didn’t know where they were coming from. But he could almost hear Mary’s voice in his head asking the same questions that she’d asked when Maverick had told her about the recurring nightmares of his own. “Do you think perhaps there’s something she’s feeling…” he paused as he tried to find the word he was looking for, waving a hand before speaking again. “Frustrated or Anxious about? That causes nightmares in adults, much moreso in children.” He glanced at Iola as he took his eyes off their kids for just a moment before putting a gentle hand on her shoulder and giving her a squeeze. “I can’t possibly imagine what it could be… maybe she doesn’t like the color of her room anymore.” It was meant to be teasing, but honestly? He’d changed Téa’s wall colors three times trying to help his baby with her anxiety.
