Suddenly, everything started to make sense. Rose rushed off from the Great Hall, her heart pounding in her chest with this sense of urgency propelling her forward. She had to get to Finch; she had to tell him she was sorry. For his mother, yes, but also for how stupid and selfish she had been this whole time. Everything she had been worried about seemed so fucking miniscule in comparison to what he was going through, but most of all Liam’s words were echoing in her mind. Finch deserved so much better than the run around she’d be giving him. And maybe he was right - what did she have to lose? This time apart had only taught her that she couldn’t live without his touch, her desire for him never waning. Rose couldn’t help but feel like a complete idiot for not seeing it sooner.
Ravenclaw had reserved the pitch this evening for practice, which made it the perfect time for Rosaline to find him and get him to talk to her. If this didn’t work… she didn’t know what she was supposed to do. The bitter winds nipped at her heels as she rushed through the grounds, her footsteps crunching on the freshly fallen snow. It wasn’t long before the numbness started to spread from her nose to her extremities, but Rose couldn’t be bothered with the cold. Her mind was focused on one goal - to find Finch and tell him just how sorry she was. To tell him she was here and she wasn’t going anywhere. To tell him…
Practice seemed to be coming to a close, Rose could see figures flying down from the skies to the ground and she picked up her speed. When she arrived at the pitch, the Ravenclaw team was breaking off into groups and heading back to the safety and warmth of the castle. She pushed past them, her gaze fixed on the tall, dark haired boy standing all by himself. As she got closer, she called to him, “Finch!” He looked at her and it was as if time itself slowed to a trickle. The redhead ignored the looks thrown in her direction, her focus entirely on the boy in front of her. Rose reached out, her fingers closing around his wrist. “Please, can we talk?”

he wasn’t enjoying things like he had before, that was for sure. the pitch was theirs, and finch tried his best, but he could tell that all eyes were on him; this time, however, it was not because of his seeking. the boy kept to himself mostly, trying to find ways to cope through the overstimulation. eventually, he was standing by his lonesome, watching the skies as his team practiced. finch saw his teammates decidedly moving out of the way for someone, but he didn’t know who until rose’s red tendrils were bouncing about in plain site. the young wizard felt like he was cornered now, turning to slip through his friends, but the girl had caught his wrist before he could move.
a woeful look in his eyes, finch winced at her words. “please, can we talk?” she’d said, and his heart was pounding in his chest. he side eyed the people around them, but realized he was all but caught. he should’ve known better than to avoid her, shouldn’t he have? a sigh escaped him, and he nodded, slipping his hand to lace fingers with her and pull her as gently as possible. “what is it, rose?” he said lowly. “they’ll have my head if i’m not back soon.”

There was a sadness in his eyes and Rose’s heart lurched in her chest at the sight of it. It hurt her to know he was hurting, but it also hurt to know he didn’t come to her about it. It was her own doing, pushing him away when all he wanted was to be close to her. And she wanted that, too - she had just been extremely stubborn and refused to see how she truly felt. His fingers intertwined with hers and she felt a peace she hadn’t felt in weeks, though it was short lived because she knew where this conversation was going.
“What is it, Rose? They’ll have my head if I’m not back soon.”
The witch turned to the rest of his team, many of them adverting their eyes like they hadn’t just been staring. “I’m stealing Finch. Anyone got a problem with that?” Her tone was sharp, her eyes glaring out at them, daring them to challenge her. When no one said anything, she turned back to Finch with a softer look in her eye. “Come on,” she told him, gently pulling him to the bleachers where they could talk without prying eyes and ears.
They were under the Gryffindor section, shielded from the cold winds at least a little. Rose reached out and took both of his hands in hers and stared up at him with sad eyes. “Finch, I wanted to tell you how sorry I am. Lola… she told me a little of what happened. I don’t want you to think you have to go through this alone.” Her thumb swept along the soft skin of his hand, Rose offering up a small, comforting smile. “I’m right here and I’m not going anywhere.”

finch looked back toward his teammates as she pulled him along, an apologetic expression on his face in lieu of the sudden distraction. he already knew that he was going to get ragged on for his later, at least by some. once they'd reached the bleachers, rose tucked them beneath it and took his hands into hers. finch furrowed his brow, eyes lifting to meet her gaze. the quizzical look on his face soon turned to stone as she started talking, almost deciding to pull away. each word, he unclenched his spine and relaxed just enough to not jerk himself for an exit. he wouldn't lie and say it didn't hurt him that lola had chosen to tell rose on her own, especially aftet the conversation they had.
yet ... finch felt the smallest bit of comfort that he didn't have to break the ice of it to the gryffindor in the first place.
she swept her fingers across his knuckles, and he let his gaze drop down to their hands. it reminded him of christmas break, how perfectly they seemed to fit together. a sigh escaped him, lashes fluttering as he leaned toward the beams just behind him. “you do not need to be caught up in this, rosie,” finch said decidedly. “lola had no right to tell you, either. i would've done it when i was ready. i'm not ready, i don't know what i'm even doing -” the boy caught himself, squeezing her hands gently. there was an intense thrumming in his chest, the anxiety raising up his throat. “i got this, okay? i'll be good. promise.”

Finch came into her life and turned her whole world upside down. The two weeks spent with him during break had to be some of the best times in her entire existence, but then the party happened and Rose’s confidence was shot. She wasn’t acting like herself and despite her efforts to pretend she was fine, she was most decidedly not fine. Liam saw it first hand and Rose had beaten herself up for showing such weakness in front of him, but she just didn’t know if she had the fight in her anymore. Everything hurt and she could feel Finch slipping through her fingers. It brought her many sleepless nights, the young witch found herself crying when she was alone. This was the very thing that she had been avoiding for so long, the whole reason why she didn’t do relationships. But even knowing how much this hurt, she still would have approached him that bitter day in the courtyard. Because it was worth it; he was worth it.
Her green gaze flickered over his face as he started speaking, still pushing her away. She couldn’t help the way the tears started to well in her eyes, filling them with water and blurring her vision. Rose blinked and a couple escaped their bonds and trickled silently down her face, but she didn’t dare let go of his hands to wipe them away. Part of her wanted to retreat into herself and she nearly did, but she had to fight for him. She couldn’t give up now, no matter how much it hurt to stand here and listen to him. Rose squeezed his hands back to let him know she was still here. There was a silence that followed as she tried to swallow past the lump that had formed in her throat. “I’m not going to let you just push me away,” she choked out, her breath shuddering. Rose took a moment to compose herself before continuing, “I - I can’t…” She shook her head. “I don’t want to be apart anymore.” Her gaze lifted to meet him, her eyes pleading with him to let her in.

finch felt suffocated. not because of rose, but their circumstances. beyond anything with his mother, he was still confused. she had so vehemently sworn off the thought of together, now standing here to tell him that she wasn't going anywhere. he searched her face and so desperately wanted to wipe the tears that had fallen from her eyes, but he remained frozen by the panic, stark still as he listened. “i don't want to be apart anymore,” she told him. finch couldn't help the way his shoulders drooped, trying to decipher the look on her face or the emotions that swirled in her emerald gaze. “this is what you wanted,” finch whispered, his own tears bubbling his waterline. “i can't let you in just for you to pull away on me again. i barely survived the first time, rosie.” the boy wanted to pull away, but she returned his squeeze and his heart clenched in his chest. he felt stupid for feeling the way he did about her, and for allowing himself to fall that deeply into this without looking back. “please, tell me what you want. what is the point of this?”

Her heart was aching in her chest and there was this gaping hole inside her as she watched him, trying to get a read on what he was feeling. Rose made plenty of mistakes in her life and one of those was stepping back from the only guy who ever treated her like someone worthy of his affection. There was shame mixed with guilt swirling around inside her as he started speaking, the feeling only intensifying when she saw the way his eyes watered. This… this wasn’t what she wanted. She didn’t want to feel disconnected from the one person she cared about more than anything. Her heart lurched, her stomach twisting as more tears fell from her eyes. Rose felt like such a terrible person for playing with Finch’s emotions like she had, but she finally opened her eyes and saw what she had in front of her. She knew what she wanted now and all she had to do was tell him.
“Please, tell me what you want.”
Her breath hitched, her lips parting as she stared up at him. It was now or never. “I want…” the words were there on the tip of her tongue, but she was having trouble getting them out. Rose swallowed. “I want to be with you,” she said, gasping for air as it was sucked out of her lungs. It was the first time she’s ever admitted it out loud. More tears glistened in her eyes and the ghost of a smile started to play on her lips. “Finch, I - I love you. I’m sorry I’ve been such a scared asshole, but I can’t handle it anymore. I love you and I want to be yours. I don’t want anyone else, I just want you.” There it was. Rose felt like the world had lifted off her shoulders with her confession, but it wasn’t over yet. She waited for his answer with bated breath, her heart pounding in her chest.

finch could've hated her in that moment, staring down with weepy eyes and feeling like the last few weeks had been for nothing. yet, for as much as he wanted to be angry, the faint smile and her words soothed a piece of him that he hadn't expected. no feeling of grief could compare to the relief he felt hearing her say it out loud. the wizard sat back into his heels, still quiet, and what she said next surprised him even more. “finch, i - i love you.” he tried to say something, but rose continued with her ramble. the boy stood there, blinking slow, trying to figure out what to do now. so, after a moment of consideration, he did the one thing he wanted to do. finch grabbed the redheads face between his hands and pulled the two of them closer, lips crashing into hers.

For a moment, she was afraid she was too late. Her gaze flickered over his features looking for something, anything, that would tell her what he was feeling. Her heart nearly stopped beating as she waited for him to say something, the anticipation driving her absolutely crazy. But then his hands came up to rest on either side of her face and he pulled her toward him. Rose’s lips parted as they collided, breathing life into the kiss as her hands slid up his arms and around the back of his head to splay in his hair. She poured all of her feelings into that kiss, every ounce of wanting she has felt toward him since that day in the courtyard. Rose clung to him for dear life as their lips passionately moved together. She loved him. So much so that she completely fell apart after he stopped talking to her. She loved him. It was all she could think about, her body pressing against his as she desperately tried to get closer. She wanted more of him, more of this. She wanted to feel the way she did during Christmas break.
Eventually, Rose came up for air, pulling back just enough to look him in the eye. She gazed at him in wonder, her lips plump and tingling. “I love you,” she repeated softly, her green eyes searching his brown ones. It had taken her a long time to figure it out. There was a lot of heartache involved on both sides, but she was here, now, ready and willing to do whatever it takes to make this work. “I think your team must hate me,” she admitted with a small smile. Rose didn’t want this moment to end, but at some point it had to. She leaned forward to rest her forehead against his, her fingers curling in his hair. Just… a little while longer.
