“Inferius,” said Iola as she paced in front of the classroom, her hands clasped together in front of her chest, her robes billowing behind her as she moved. “An inferius is a corpse that has been reanimated by a Dark witch or wizard to do their bidding. Inferi may resemble zombies, but they are not the same. Inferi are created using a complex form of Dark magic called Necromancy.” She went on to explain the origins of the name, the history of inferi in wizarding culture, and the way to identify one. “Being creatures of darkness, they fear warmth and light. Fire is your best defense against an inferius. We’ll go over defenses next class. I want twelve inches on inferi –” she cut off, her startling gaze fixed on a familiar looking watch. Iola stopped pacing, eyes widening as they flicked to the warm and confused gaze of Matteo Cappello. “Erm, Professor Walker?” he asked tentatively. Iola blinked and swallowed. “Twelve inches on inferi by next class! Dismissed. Matteo,” she added quickly as he moved to pack up. “I’d like a word with you.” Iola offered him a small reassuring smile. Matteo simply nodded.
When the classroom was empty, she gestured for him to show her the watch. “Where did you get this?” Matty raised his arm, letting the professor inspect his watch feeling a little weirded out by what was going on. “It was my dad’s?” he questioned, giving her a strange look. Iola eyed the bear insignia closely, feeling a mixture of dread and excitement bubble inside her. “Did you know him?” she asked softly, eyes still fixed on the watch. Matteo coughed awkwardly. “Erm, no. I just know his name.” Iola looked up at his face. “What was his name?” He scratched the back of his neck. “Er - Sebastian B something Bah something I can’t remember.” Her heart leapt to her throat. “Bakke?” He nodded. “Yep, that’s it. Why? Did you know him?” Iola waved her wand, her chair coming to rest behind her as she fell into it. Her uncle Sebastian, who disappeared when she was just a child, left the family to do whatever it was that made her Papa so angry. Her eyes focused on the boy in front of her, taking in his features and looking for similarities between them. Matteo was still looking at her strangely and the brunette let out a sigh. “My father had that exact same watch. They were gifts from our grandfather to his sons, one to Christen and one to Sebastian.” Tears started to well in the young wizard’s eyes and he shifted in his seat. “You’re saying that we’re cousins?” His tears spilled over, trickling down his cheeks. Iola nodded, leaning forward to summon a box of tissues and hand it over to him. He took it with a smile, taking one and wiping his tears. “Sorry,” he croaked. “It’s just been me and my mum and I - “ he wiped at his face some more before taking a shuddering breath. “You know about my dad?” She offered him a small nod. “All that I can remember, but we should be able to find out more information. I didn’t know my uncle well at all, but I knew my mother and father for a short time before they died. Their path led me astray and I paid the price for it. Don’t make my mistakes. If you go looking, make sure you take what you learn with a grain of salt,” she said softly, reaching out to place a hand on top of his. “If you want to know more… let me know. We’ll figure it out together.”
