“Okay,” Nate said as he dumped a pile of books onto the table. The boy settled in his seat and filtered through them, handing one over to the dark haired boy across from him. “We’ve got that exam in Defense Against the Dark Arts this week. My bet is that it’s gonna be about Dementors and the Unforgivables.” Professor Walker had even given him access to the Restricted Section for some possible study material. One or two of the books he collected made their home there. Nate looked up at Liam with a sigh, glancing around to look for his friend who was supposed to be here. Finch had kind of stuck to himself lately. “You think Finch is gonna show?”

Liam's foot lightly tapped the floor as Nate produced a pile of study material. "Thanks," he mumbled as a book was passed his way. He read the title and skimmed through it as his dormmate gave him the rundown. "Three Unforgivable Curses. All of which were classified as such in 1717," he said without looking up. "And the use of them on another human being will land you in Azkaban where you're subject to spend your days at the mercy of Dementors." He looked up with a cheeky smile, but it faded when Nate sighed and asked about Finch. His gaze shifted to the empty seat. "It's a toss up," he answered honestly. Finch hadn't exactly been Finch lately. They had agreed to study together, but that didn't mean everyone was going to follow through. Then again, maybe he was just running late. Liam leaned back in his seat, the book forgotten on the table. "Have you talked to him?" When was the proper time to stop giving your friend their space and actually make sure they were good? Soon. The answer was really soon.

Nate ran a hand through his hair, nodding along as Liam spoke. He scribbled some notes down on the piece of parchment laid out in front of him. Despite his reputation, he was actually quite clever and studious. He didn't become one of the best students in his class by sitting on his arse. Some might feel jealous, thinking that Nathaniel had it all, but he knew the truth of it. This world had taken everything from him and he was working hard to take something back.
He was worried about his friend. Something had changed this week and Nate was still trying to work out what. His blue gaze lifted to look at Liam, a soft sigh falling off his lips. Sure, he could just be late, but Nate was seriously doubting that. Maybe he'd talk to him tonight after practice. "Not really. We've both been busy, but I think I'm gonna say something to him tonight." It may look like Nathaniel didn't care about others, but he had a big heart and his friends meant a lot to him. Even if he didn't let them get too close. Finch was the closest friend he had, but still Nate didn't let his guard down around him. "Maybe he's just busy with Rose." He kind of doubted that, but it was a possibility.

One could freely throw Liam into the jealous category. He'd be lying to himself and everyone else if he claimed not to be a smidge annoyed with the way Nate carried himself. Maybe it was more envy than jealousy. Nate could screw off and party it up, balance school, and maintain excellent marks, all while being ridiculously talented in music, and running through the female student population like candy. It was infuriating at times. Still, they were dorm mates, and Liam had come to like some of his qualities. Hence why he hadn't found an excuse not to study with his fellow Ravenclaw. Six years could do that to you.
A thought crossed his mind as Nate mentioned being too busy lately. They all lived in the same dorm, and yet none of them had reached out to the other. Did that make them terrible people? Not really, they'd just been caught up in their own stuff. At least now they were piecing everything together. Now they were seeing something wasn't right. Nate mentioned Rose, and Liam couldn't help but look doubtful. "About that. I talked to Rose the other day, and while I'm not going to put her business on the table, I think the odds are unlikely." It was the most delicate way he could put it. Rose was on an emotional rollercoaster. Finch was MIA. Could it be connected? Probably. Probably not. "That might be a good idea," he responded to Nate's decision to see what was up with their dorm mate. "Let me know how it goes?"

Nathaniel considered his dorm mates his friends. They were closer to him than any friends of his outside of his house - they saw what he did behind closed doors. Liam and Finch had probably heard Nate play the guitar a hundred times or seen him read the same book over and over again until he had memorized it word for word. Not many people saw that side of him. Despite all that, Nate kept them at somewhat of a distance to protect himself from getting hurt. No one understood how sensitive the boy could be, how deep his wounds were, and he liked to keep it that way. It was easier for everyone to think him some dickhead than to know the truth of what lay beneath his skin. No one understood how hard he worked for everything he had.
Something was going on with Finch; that much was clear. His brow quirked upwards at the look on Liam’s face, a feeling of dread stirring up inside him. He was about to tell him something he didn’t want to hear, wasn’t he? Nate listened intently as he told him a little of his conversation with Rose and it was like his worst fears had come true. There was something seriously wrong with their friend. A heavy sigh fell out of him and he ran his hand through his hair again, shaking his head. “That’s not great,” he replied, feeling a bit of dread in his belly. Finch wasn’t the type to just go MIA for no reason. Nathaniel nodded as Liam said it might be a good idea. After this news about Rose, he was even more determined to get to the bottom of what was going on. “Yeah, of course,” he told him. Who else was he gonna tell? Liam was probably the second closest friend he had. “I’m worried about him, you know?” There wasn’t much else to say on the matter, but Nate couldn’t really let it go.

Nate wasn't the only one who was worried. Liam had been playing with the idea of finding Finch too. Their friend had been acting strange the past few days. Liam had originally chalked it up to a generalized problem, but now that Nate had brought it up, the matter felt more pressing. He stared down at the book he'd been handed earlier. He suddenly didn't feel like studying. This uneasy feeling was the same kind he got when Ralphie came strolling in with his head down and shoulders slumped. I hate this feeling, he thought to himself. A feeling of uselessness. It made him question everything. Did Finch not trust them enough to come to them with his problems? Everyone needed space and time to process, but this felt like overkill.
Surprise. Surprise. Nate wasn't as heartless as he let on. He might have made a joke about the guy warming up to them if the situation didn't feel so dire. He slowly brought his gaze up. "Trust me, you're not the only one." He was shaking his head now. For once he had no answer to their problem, aside from hunting Finch down and asking him face to face what was going on. Of course, Nate had already decided he'd do just that. Liam would have to wait on the sidelines until the other came back with an answer. Patience was one of his best qualities, but he was suddenly feeling anxious. "I don't think we're going to get any studying done like that," he said, pushing the book away from. "I just wished he'd come to at least one of us." Even if it was just to lie and say he was okay. At least there'd be some confirmation. At least then they could pull him off to the side and get to the bottom of the issue. This was frustrating. He sighed, deflating in his chair. "Wouldn't it be nice if we were just overreacting?" To have Finch walk in with some lame excuse as to why he was late. Wishful thinking. Liam stared up at the ceiling, his thoughts running rampant.

The boy was quiet as he listened to his friend express his own concerns over Finch’s behavior, his cerulean eyes trained on him. Nate nodded slowly and hummed in agreement; it certainly seemed like the two of them were too preoccupied to get much studying done. He let out a sigh and ran his hands down his face, blowing air out of pursed lips, leaning onto his elbows which were propped against the table. “Yeah, me too,” he told him. “There’s always tomorrow.” By then he should have spoken with Finch and they’d have some answers about what was going on with him. If he didn’t have any luck on that front, Nathaniel could always hunt down Lola and ask her, but he was hopeful his best friend would come clean when confronted about it. It just kind of really sucked that this had gone on for so long.
“Wouldn’t it be nice if we were just overreacting?”
Nate let out a soft, dry laugh in response. “Yeah, that’d be nice. This just isn’t like him and if he’s not with Rose, then something must be wrong,” he said with a frown, rubbing the stubble on his face. As Liam stared at the ceiling, Nate looked around the library. Man, this study session got heavy pretty quickly. At least they both were looking out for their friend. “Hell, I’d go find him now but I have no idea where he might be. Haven’t seen him since Potions this morning.” He looked back at Liam. “Why don’t we just call this session over and meet back here tomorrow?” They’d at least have some idea of what was going on and then, maybe, things could get back to normal. “I’ve got Quidditch practice here in a bit anyway.”

He'd be able to survive Professor Walker's class without the extra help. Maybe his marks wouldn't be as high without a proper study session, but he had a good enough understanding of the topic. Honestly, a bad mark was the least of his concerns right now. He just wanted to make sure his friend was okay. Whatever Finch had going on, it was affecting the lot of them. Nate offered for them to try again tomorrow. "Sure. That works." Liam gathered his things and placed them back in his bag. No point in taking up unnecessary space. If things sorted themselves out tomorrow, it was a win for everyone. If not, they'd have to get together and figure out their next move. There was no way they were going to leave Finch high and dry.
What could have happened to make Finch abandon everyone at the drop of a dime? When he'd talked to Rose, he'd been under the impression that Finch was just having girl problems. That theory shifted way left field when nothing had been brought up to Nate. If Finch had consulted the womanizer of their little group, then that obviously wasn't the problem. Liam stood up, placing one strap over his shoulder. Finch wasn't with Rose. He wasn't with them. The next best thing was to wait until he showed up in the Ravenclaw Tower or.... "Before you go. He hasn't been skipping Quidditch practice, has he?" If that wasn't the biggest red flag, he didn't know what was. He'd search the castle top to bottom in that case.

They had more pressing matters to worry about than one measly Defense Against the Dark Arts exam. It wasn't like the boys were going to fail it with how hard they paid attention in class, plus Nate had his notes he could go over after talking to Finch. Either way he wasn't going to lose sleep over missing one study session. Now Finch was another story entirely. Depending on how this talk with him went, Nathaniel could most certainly lose sleep over it. His mind filtered through all the possibilities, each one sounding more ludacris than the last. Nate felt like he was going crazy trying to figure it out, so he did his best to empty his mind of all thoughts. He'd get his answer when he spoke to him and Nate couldn't afford to lose focus during practice.
The raven followed Liam's lead and packed up his things, standing and slinging his bag over his shoulder. He was about to start heading back to his dorm for his broom when his friend spoke up. Nate's brows furrowed as he thought about it. "He missed last practice, but he said something came up," he explained. It was a shame he wasn't there; the rookie Seekers managed to lose the snitch and Nathaniel was tasked to find it with Laurie Greer. Nate hadn't even thought twice about it until Liam said something. "He wouldn't skip it two times in a row," he said, trying to convince himself as well as Liam. He supposed he'd find out soon enough, wouldn't he? "If he's not there I'll come find you, yeah? We can go look for him ourselves."
