Nathaniel set his broom down on his trunk and stretched his limbs. His arm was a little sore with how hard he worked at practice. The boy looked over at his friend, his brow quirked. "Okay, spill it. What's on your mind? You've been distracted lately."

there was an unrest in the air as nate slipped in and settled himself, one that finch knew he was the cause of. after a few minutes, the inevitable happened, leaving the young wizard sighing in exasperation. “i’m good, man. schoolwork’s tough this year,” he lied, instantly regretting saying a word. he knew nate would know better.

He frowned at the lie, spotting it instantly. Finch was never one to hide stuff from him, or at least he thought. Nate turned around to face him, leaning against his bed. "Bullshit," he said, calling him out. "Liam and I both have been worried. You're not acting like yourself man."

finch felt the panic rising in his throat, gaze switching from nate’s face to the ground. he leaned onto his knees with his elbows, sighing into his hands. he hadn’t considered how his grief might affect his friends, especially not liam and nate. “i don’t know what to say, nate,” the boy huffed. “i … i found some things out. about my mother,” it was the first time he’d said it since talking with lola.

The boy watched his friend carefully, brows furrowed with concern. Something was clearly bothering him, but Nate was at a complete loss as to what. Fortunately, he didn't have to wait too long for an answer, Finch mentioning something about his mother. A heaviness fell upon his chest, Nathaniel thinking of his own mum. "Okay," he said solemnly, his blue gaze still fixed on the other. "I'm not going to pry." He was aware that Finch and Lola had lost their mother many years ago. A heavy sigh fell out of him and Nate moved to sit on the edge of his bed. "I know I'm not, like, the kind of guy people lean on... but you can talk to me if you need to." It felt weird to say it, but if anyone understood what it meant to have a dead mother, it was Nate. Perhaps Finch didn't know much about Nathaniel's private life, but after opening up to Laurie he felt it was only right he tried with other people.

“i know, nate. i know.” finch looked down to his hands, frowning. gods, he felt like such an ass right now. the look in his friends eye felt familiar, and the boy cleared his throat. “i can lean on you, i just … i’m confused, you know? i was given an answer and still left with so many questions. but,” finch looked back up, a small smile on the corner of his lips. “that still doesn’t mean i have to push my friends out. i’m sorry.”

Honestly, now knowing the context, Nate wasn’t upset at all with Finch. He was never upset with him, only worried. It wasn’t like Finch to disappear like that and he knew that it wasn’t just himself and Liam who was concerned. Nathaniel wasn’t good at comforting people, but he felt himself compelled to try and comfort Finch. He rested a hand on the other’s shoulder and nodded along with his words. “You don’t have to apologize. We were just worried about you.” He paused, considering his next words carefully. “I never knew my mum, but when the nanny that raised me was dying I pushed everyone away and made their life a living hell.” He was a young child at the time, not a young man, but he could understand at least some of what his friend was feeling. “I don’t know, man. You’ve got people that care about you and just want to see you do well. So, take all the time you need, but know you can come to any of us if you need to.”

listening to his fellow ravenclaw speak about not knowing his mum but losing the closest thing he had to one sent small pangs of sadness through him. he had never seen nate as vulnerable as in that moment, the humanness of him becoming a reality. finch never cared what others had to say, there was far more to nathaniel than met the eye and he'd known that at the very least long before today. finch ended up offering his friend a solemn nod, clasping his hands together to tap his thumbs. “i've always tried to be the person who doesn't turn their pain into anger,” he admitted. “yet i sit here feeling so angry at the world, and for what? nothing changes the outcome of that day. she's still gone.” if he could go back, if he could stop himself from ever finding out, he would have. “what did you do? with the anger, with it all?”

Nate had spent the last several years keeping others at a distance. He acted like he was some uncaring ass because that was the easiest way to keep people from poking and prodding into his life. But it couldn't be further from the truth. He's lost a lot in his life and felt completely and utterly alone for most of it, but spending time with Laurie had him realizing that maybe opening up to his friends wasn't such a bad thing. Finch had been there for him since day one, despite Nate's unwillingness to open up, and he felt he needed to pay that kindness back. He let his hand fall back into his lap as he watched his friend. Finch began to speak and Nate listened intently, feeling a sense of familiarity at his words. "I don't know, I still feel angry at times. I don't -" he paused, anxiety starting to bubble up inside him. "I'm probably not the best person to give that kind of advice, Finch. I don't really have the healthiest coping mechanisms." Nate sighed heavily, his gaze falling on the guitar that was propped against his bed frame. "I did find some outlets, I guess. Quidditch and music. That helps me when I can't think straight." He looked back to his friend with a sad smile. "You just gotta find that thing that really calls to you." Liam was probably better at this kind of stuff, but Nate was trying.
