Character History: FAMILY HISTORY
Born in the Scottish Highlands, Isla grew up an only witch from a large family whose attention was on making money and taking care of the many children– due to this, her wizarding talents were often hidden from her family. While her siblings were odd, they unfortunately were not born with the natural capacity for magic that Isla was. This came fully to fruition when the young girl performed her first act of accidental wandless magic before her ninth birthday. It wasn’t long after that she’d been notified of her acceptance in to – Hogwarts. She’d gone from barely noticeable in a sea of siblings, to a pride! Well, so she thought… her muggle caretakers were not her mother and father, but the Aunt of Isla. They did not approve of her attending such a strange place, unable to grasp the concept of a school for Witches and Wizards. It all sounded like witchcraft to them.
Despite this, Isla was persistent. She wished to attend Hogwarts at any cost. Playing a simple trick on her guardians, she was able to successfully slip away to Hogwarts without further issue and pray her guardians didn’t look too closely at the fine details of her trick. Isla was a bit of a trickster, even in her time at Hogwarts. Daring, bold, and unapologetically brave, Isla made a name for herself in the world of Quidditch. While she loved the magic of it all, Quidditch had stolen her heart, along with a young Ravenclaw by the name of Charles. From a muggle family like herself, Charles understood the strife that came with balancing the Wizarding World and the Muggle world. Before long, the two students hit it off.
Though on the Quidditch pitch they were rivals, Isla and Charles became inseparable after their fourth year. They were the best of friends all throughout their time in Hogwarts, spending summers and holidays together and aiding each other through their journey at Hogwarts. Of course, though, they could not stay children forever. While Isla wished to pursue her talents in Quidditch, she had matured enough to realize her talent did not surpass Hogwarts. Charles, on the other hand, had managed to catch the eye of a few professional Quidditch players. And so, the two set off on their separate ways, with Charles playing professionally, and Isla choosing to work for the Ministry. Of course, this wasn’t without its benefits. While Isla stepped away from playing Qudditch, she got her fix working for the Department of Magical Games and Sports.
Her job led her to Charles yet again and before long, the two got back in touch and eventually confessed their admiration and affection for each other. Not long after their reunion, the two married and had their first child, Elsie Greer. Elsie was a very happy child born to two very happy and loving parents. From a young age, Elsie resembled her mother. She was a bit too bold for a young child and a bit too clumsy for her own boldness. Still, she was not a child that cried when she fell down. Instead she huffed and puffed and pushed herself up. Elsie grew up in London, as both her parents' jobs centered in the Wizarding World. She grew up with a father that was in the prime of his job and a mother who was steadily growing unhappy with her job.
She was a perceptive child, aware and alert, despite her own clumsiness. She saw how tired her mum looked, and how youthful her father felt. The two were on very separate journeys, even if Elsie didn’t know it at the time. Still, the Greer family was one that pushed love and attention above all else. With both Charles and Isla wishing Elsie to grow up in a different household then they did, they supported and loved her as best as they could.
Though Isla and Charles grew apart as Elsie matured, when Isla switched departments at the ministry, tensions seemed to settle between the two– and eventually, their second child, Lachlan was born. Elsie did not like her brother. Not at first. She’d grown up an only child and now there was some horrible, terrible, weird baby that was taking all of her parents' attention and time. Elsie’s first act of accidental magic was performed in an attempt to soothe baby Lachlan by chiming the bells in a wind chime at their home. Soon enough, a letter was delivered to her informing her she’d been accepted into her parents alma mater. She’d been accepted into Hogwarts.
SCHOOL YEARS
Year One | 11
Gryffindor. Gryffindor…? Though Elsie resembled her mother in many ways, she didn’t feel brave coming to Hogwarts. Though Elsie had been raised in a magical household, going to Hogwarts was a scary ordeal. Leaving her parents for the first time in her life put her in a state of panic and apprehension she’d never been in before. Though Elsie experienced many difficult situations, nothing had been so terrifying as to leave her home and live alone… With strangers. She feared her parents would come to love baby Lachlan more than her and that they would forget about her, but thankfully, her parents dealt with this fear by showering Elsie in affection via letters whenever they could.
Despite her difficulty in the majority of her classes, Elsie did have a natural affinity to one things; creatures. As much as she wished to please her parents by playing Qudditch, her focuses were elsewhere– Still, she attempted the sport. Perhaps it was out of an obligation to impress the two, or perhaps it was her own natural talent, but Elsie had her eyes set on the Quidditch team by her second year.
Year Two | 12
The only thing on Elsie’s mind at the start of that school year was getting out on the Quidditch Pitch… It was the only time she had her parents rapt attention– and also sneaking back the Bowtruckle she’d found injured at the end of her first year. She felt guilty, of course, but she was a very good pet owner! Her owl loved her and she’d sort of taken up the Bowtruckle as a best friend… She couldn’t help herself– And she’d intended on returning the little guy back to his home, but the creature had formed an attachment to Elsie and the bonsai tree she’d grown for him. She accepted her destiny as a pet owner. Though, she looked at it more as best friends. Her affinity for animals and creatures of the sort only grew as the year went by. Lachlan was certainly fascinated by the little bowtruckle when Elsie came home for breaks.
Year Three | 13
Elsie’s affinity for the magical creature was not unnoticed by the Professor of Care of Magical Creatures who caught her bowtruckle– she’d so fondly named Oakey (finding a Bowtruckle on an oak tree and naming it Oakey felt original at 13)-- peaking out of her pocket and spoke to her after class. She admitted to having fostered the friend for over a year now and the Professor took great joy in seeing her prosper in the subject. It was then the Professor began allowing her to aid him in some of his tending of creatures. Elsie wasn’t nervous– not at all. It seemed the girl had quite the knack for keeping up with creatures. It was like breathing or existing– it just came naturally for her.
Year Four | 14
Finally in her fourth year, Elsie decided to Qudditch wasn’t for her. After getting her shite rocked one game, she threw her broom down and denounced the game. It was a stupid game in the first place! One that she’d only participated in to make her parents feel like she was good enough for them. But with Oakley by her side, and a professor that was fostering her natural talent and fondness of the creatures, it was all she needed to stay content and happy.
Year Five | 15
The Care for Magical Creatures Professor continued fostering Elsie’s passion for magical creatures. She received extra lessons from the Professor on creatures of all sorts, and encouraged her to continue pursuing her passion outside of Hogwarts. Exploration and curiosity were key, as well as a patient demeanor when it came to dealing with certain animals and creatures. The professor was impressed a bowtruckle had stuck with Elsie so long and she was prideful to know that she’d been patient enough to win Oakely over via woodlice in her first year.
Year Six | 16
Lots was happening in the world of the Greer’s. Lachlan was nine and had accidentally blown a microwavable popcorn up when his temper got the best of him. It was good to know he’d be following in her epic footsteps at Hogwarts one day… Elsie was informed via owl two months before Christmas that her mum had gone into labor. With two twins. That she had no idea about. It was an interesting Christmas to say the least… With two extra siblings, the Greer house was starting to feel cramped.
Year Seven | 17
Her final year. The end of her time at Hogwarts. Thing at home had become far more turbulent with her parents-- more arguing about her future, fussing about what she was going to do to uphold the good Greer name. Elsie wanted to continue her passion for creatures, but her parents insisted that the Ministry of Magic would give her far more stability than anything in the silly field of Magical Creatures-- So she looked into it but upon seeing the horrible demeanor shown towards magical creatures, Elsie vowed she would never, ever work for the Ministry of Magic. It was also when she finally graduated, that she decided she would continue following her passions despite her parents disapproval.
ADULT LIFE
Elsie had big plans and she was ambitious enough to go after them. Independent study on magical creatures would allow her to write a book or a paper or make a speech to dissuade the Ministry of Magic from their oppressive and inhuman view on Magical Creatures. Her work meant something and with every creatures she studied, the more she grew her knowledge and empathy of the creatures. They were compassionate, playful, and the least bit dangerous. Humans, witches and wizards, they were good at provoking many creatures just purely based on their fear response. They were scared of so many magical creatures that they thought killing or imprisioning was the best option-- Elsie knew better. It took knowledge to understand and she understood many magical creatures truly and deeply.
It wasn't until she was 23 that she discovered America was the place to be for her research. North American magical creatures were a whole different rodeo than European creatures. They offered her a whole knew pool of research and study subjects that she fell in love with. Thankfully, she found less resistance in the magic community to her research. While there was still an aggressive attitude towards magical creatures, it was less deadly. In her study, it is where she met her partner who was actively trying to seek better protections for Magical Creatures. Elsie fell in love with him, Nikolai, and with America. If it hadn't been for a tragic accident, her life would've been perfect.
--
No one really knew what happened to Elsie, but they did know she showed up in the UK in the start of 2023 changed. She used to be a firecracker, full of energy and vigor. But the woman who dragged herself back to her parents was a little girl, horrified and scared of whatever she'd encountered. It took her a good year to get back on her feet, but eventually she did. Though she did not return to her independent research, she did take up work at Hogwarts where she hops to continue educating the next generation on the wonders of magical creatures. Thankfully, she's gotten some of her spunk back-- but there's still a long way to go.
