There was nothing of interest on the second floor, which made it the perfect place to meet up with Ralphie. Every Monday following a Hogsmeade Weekend, Liam had made it a point to meet here and deliver a handful of sugary treats to the Hufflepuff. It also gave them time to catch up whenever things got too hectic to really talk. Sliding to the floor, he emptied his robe pockets and dropped the contents to his left. Mice Pops, Sugar Quills, Ice Mice, and Exploding Bonbons. It was a decent enough haul. Drawing his right knee up to his chest, he glanced down the hall, looking for his brother. Liam had arrived early, so he wasn't pressed for time. Resting his head against the wall, he glanced up at the ceiling, letting his thoughts wander. Tags: Ralph Sagewater

Hogsmeade Weekend had come and gone! Finally! Ralph didn't understand why he had to be a third year to go to the little village, but those were the rules. It didn't matter anyway. He had an older brother who could go for him! Rushing to the second floor, he excused himself as he avoided bumping into his fellow peers. Poor Basil was hanging on for dear life inside of his robe pocket. Ralph may have been a little overexcited. He cared more about spending time with Liam than he did the candy. Maybe it was an underlying issue that no one talked about, but Ralph clung to Liam like he might disappear if he looked in the opposite direction for too long. No one complained though, so he had little reason to correct the behavior.
He cleared the stairs and spotted the Ravenclaw sitting on the floor. "Liam!" He hurried over, sliding to a halt and dropping to the floor, careful not to crush Basil in the process. Once the world had stopped bouncing, the rat crawled out onto the floor and sniffed at the treats on the floor. "How was the Hogsmeade trip," Ralph asked with wide eyes, his head tilted upwards, and a smile on his face. He dug into his opposite pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of parchment. "Look, I passed my Charms Essay!"

He almost jumped out of his skin as Ralph's voice echoed down the hallway. "Hey Ralphie." He went to tell the younger male to stop running but restrained himself. As the Hufflepuff settled into a sitting position and started talking, Liam was happy to stay quiet and listen. How anyone could be constantly happy all the time was beyond him. He had plenty of bad days, but it seemed like Ralph had zero. It had been like that for as long as he could remember. The only time he'd seen that smile falter was after Ralph's father had been killed. That felt like ages ago. Sometimes he wanted to ask Ralph about it, but the idea of opening old wounds didn't sit right with him. He didn't want to shatter the peace.
"Hogsmeade is the same," he finally answered. "It gets kind of old after you've gone so many times. It's just nice to get away from the castle for a bit." He shrugged and picked up Basil. "You think he gets nervous when I bring you Ice Mice," he asked with a mischievous grin. A brow raised as a piece of parchment was handed over to him. "You know, Mom bought you a bookbag for a reason, right?" He had to put the rat down to uncrumple the paper. After a moment he made out the words and the marks. "Well done, Ralphie," he praised. "Your lack of organization is forgiven," he teased.

Ralph clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. "It'll never get old for me," he chirped. "I'll always enjoy the magic they say Hogsmeade brings." He leaned forward, surveying the goods. "Yes! You brought me Explo-what? Hey, don't say things like that around him. He's super smart, so he knows what you're saying," Ralph complained, reaching up to take Basil back. "And for the record, he's a rat, not a mouse." The younger of the Sagewater boys rolled his eyes. "Don't listen to him Basil." If he had been half as confident and lively with his peers as he was with his brother, he'd do just fine at Hogwarts. Placing the rat back on the floor, Ralph took to stuffing his face with an exploding bonbon. It was his favorite candy in the whole wide world!
"I use my bookbag," he said, giggling as the candy exploded. "But I didn't want to carry it." He shrugged. "It's just one piece of paper. It's not like I have to turn it back in or anything." He stuck his tongue out as Liam teased him about being disorganized. "I mean, it's hard to fail stuff when you have a nerdy older brother that demands you organize every piece of parchment, quill, and even ink." He tossed a piece of candy at the Ravenclaw. "Seriously, thanks for the help." Pulling a goofy face, he slid back against the wall. "Any news to report," he asked eagerly.

"You're innocently optimistic. Don't ever change," Liam told him with a smile. How did he manage to luck out with such a cool little brother? "Don't worry, summer break will be here and gone before you know it." He then laughed as Ralph went on about the rat being intelligent enough to understand their conversation. "Uh huh, sure. Whatever you say Ralphie." He shook his head. "I know it's a rat." He reared back as candy was thrown at his chest. "Surprised you didn't try out for Quidditch with an arm like that." He could do this all day. Picking up the Sugar Quill that had landed in his lap, he unwrapped it and took a bite. "Oh hush. I'm not a nerd. I simply run on logic," he retorted. He gave Ralph a little push. "Anytime kid." He looked up and down the hallway before he spoke. "Do I look like your go to gossip report?" Liam stretched his legs out, letting the silence since in and the anticipation build. "Fine. Rumor has it that someone's been knabbing trophies from the Trophy Room and leaving those muggle Furby things in their place. There's apparently some buried treasure under the Boathouse. Some fourth year supposedly found a treasure map in the Library. And if you somehow manage to get into the Detention Chamber, one of the Professors keeps a stash of hidden brandy." He raised his hands before Ralph could bombard him with questions. "All rumors, nothing confirmed. Explore at your own risk."

"I promise!" He was glad to have someone like Liam that he could rely on. Glad that there was a person he could go to when he was feeling lonely or sad or confused. He rarely got mad, but Liam was always there to talk him down on the chance that he was. Ralph was going to miss not having the Ravenclaw around. Would Liam write him letters every week? Would he send gifts? Would he be around for the holidays? The thought was dreadful one that he dared not linger on. He still had time to enjoy his brother. Besides, he wouldn't be completely alone. He'd have Martha and Aisling, although it wouldn't be the same. He couldn't talk with them about girls! Or his bug collection! Or the gnarly scrape he got from jumping off one of the courtyard statues. No, it wouldn't be the same at all. "I don't want to rush the break. I won't get to see my friends as much."
Ralph picked up another piece of candy. "You think Mom and Dad will both be able to take off this summer for that trip to Norway," he asked after a moment. Every summer for as long as he could remember, they had gone on a week long family vacation. There had been only two incidents where the trip had been canceled. Once because their mother had a big project with Witch Weekly regarding some out of town celebrity. That had been a real bummer. He'd spent his time raiding the garden for new bugs to add to his collection. And then two years after that there was some huge case their dad was working on at the Auror Office. Something about a raid in Knockturn Alley.
Ralph dramatically fell over as he was pushed. Staring up at the ceiling he rolled his eyes. "I like my feet on the ground, thank you very much." He'd leave Quidditch to the people who liked to eat bludgers for a living. He rolled onto his belly as Liam gave him a hard time about the rumor mill. "Come onnnn. My friends and I need a new adventure," he begged. When his brother finally caved, Ralph perked up. He was terrified of getting in trouble, but an adventure could never be turned down! "What's a Furby? Never mind, we'll find out ourselves. Maybe we'll even catch the culprit!" He sat up suddenly. "Stakeout! Just like Dad!" He was practically bouncing. "Treasure hunting sounds fun! We need to locate that map." The last bit was a little high stake for him. "I'm not sneaking into the Detention Chamber, Liam." He stood up and crossed his arms behind his head. "Thanks for the report."

Liam knew he could count on the Hufflepuff to uphold that promise. He wouldn't be a good big brother if he didn't find Ralphie's statement a bit peculiar. Everyone was impatiently waiting for the moment they didn't have to read a book or turn in homework. He knew Ralph was going to miss his friends, but there was an underlying message underneath it all. This was their last official summer together. He'd have to make sure it was a special one. "Don't worry, I'm sure Mom will let you have as many sleepovers as you like," he responded, keeping up appearances. "And you and I can take our own little adventure down to that muggle shop you've been raving about." It really sucked that he wouldn't be able to get his apparating license this summer. They could go to plenty of places then.
"We're going to Norway," he confirmed. "Dad said even if something comes up, he'll push the vacation back." Ozymandias Sagewater was a busy man, but he made plenty of time for his wife and kids. He refused to be an absent father. His boys meant the world to him. They were his pride and joy, and he was proud of the great young men they were turning out to be. "And Mom has already planned out the itinerary." He flashed Ralph a smile. "Does the words theme park have any meaning to you," he asked.
He laughed at the comment of keeping his feet on the ground. "Live a little, Ralphie." He gave a dismissive wave. "You and your friends are always up to no good." The underclassmen were troublemakers. As Ralph went into detail about the possible ways he could explore these shenanigans, Liam quietly listened. "Just be careful, or you will end up in detention. I can't bail you out either."

Ralph chewed on the candy thoughtfully. "A sleepover would be cool. We could have popcorn and play cards and build a fort and maybe camp in the woods. I bet Dad would take us if he had a day off. Or you could take us. Mom can bake us one of those fancy cakes she likes to make when Grandma comes over. We'll all have cavities before the summer ends," he grinned. Ralph loved sweets, hence the candy he was frequently gifted. His eyes brightened as Liam agreed to take him on adventures too. "You're the best big brother ever!" He flung himself at Liam, giving him a big hug. "They have all kinds of comics and trading cards. I want to get a whole bunch so we can read them together. Oh, and I can bring them back to school. Maybe I'll start a club next year. A comic book club!"
"What's in Norway," he asked. He hadn't been told anything. He liked traveling with his family. There was never a boring summer in the Sagewater household. Ralphie nodded as Liam explained that there dad had promised to make the vacation happen. He was a good dad. The younger boy gasped. "Really! We're going to a theme park! Yes!" He stood up and did a little dance. "I can't wait for summer. Everyone's going to be so jealous!" He leaned down and picked up Basil, holding the rat above his head. "You here that Basil, we're going to a theme park!"
"I live plenty hanging out with Liny," he huffed. He then gave a mischievous smile. "We aren't always up to no good. I think I'm the reasonable one in the group. I'll do my best to stay out of trouble though." He looked down at Liam. "Mom will have a fit if I ever get detention."

"Sure, I'll take a bunch of bratty kids on a camping trip. I'll even throw in a nice ghost story that will leave you all shaking in your boots," he offered. "Just don't come barging into my tent crying when the monsters try to get you." He didn't think Ralph or any of his friends were bratty. He thought the group was full of troublemakers and bad influences, but they made sure Ralph didn't become a recluse. If he ever though his baby brother was going down a slippery slope, he'd inform him. So far, he had little concerns. Kids were going to be kids. "Ralphie, I think you'll have cavities before the school year lets out if you keep this up," he pointed towards the candy pile. He was not going to take any responsibility for being the supplier. He gave a surprised yelp as Ralph hugged him. "I try to be," he responded with a small laugh, hugging the Hufflepuff back. "Sure thing kid, we'll stay up all night reading comics. Matter of fact, you can buy as many as you like. Think of it as a late birthday gift." He grinned when Ralph spoke of starting a comic book club. "Go for it."
As Ralph danced with the news of theme parks, Liam stood up and dusted off his clothes. "Don't tell mom I told you," he said with a laugh. He rolled his eyes when Ralph spoke of Liny. He knew the little Ravenclaw and his brother were always getting into this, that, or the other. "It's a wonder you haven't gotten detention." He shook his head and ruffled Ralph's hair. "Try to keep it that way, because like you said, Mom would have a fit. Nothing more embarrassing than getting a howler. Behave Ralph, I have to get down to the dungeons for Potions. I'll see you at dinner. "
