Caoimhe Callanan grew up being regaled by stories of her druid ancestors. Living in Ballintoy near their ancestral land, the reminders were all around her of the magic she inherited. From the tilted Cromleach at Mount Druid where the druid convinced the muggles the tilt was to drain the blood of their unwilling sacrifices (a tale as much to keep the muggles away as much to mess with them) to the fables Giants’ Causeway trodden by the giants who allied with the druids and helped them win their ancient wars. The Callanans had traditions beyond the pureblood nonsense of the wizarding world and she was made to promise to honor them.
Cormac knew his own history just as well as Caoimhe knew hers. He grew up surrounded by paintings of the legacy that grew from Cathbad the chief druid in the court of King Conchobar mac Nessa. The stories of each descendent was told at every family gathering.
Both Ravenclaws, the pair knew it was destiny that brought them together and they were nearly inseparable from the very start of their friendship. Both families were thrilled when the couple announced their engagement. They were ready to settle down with a large family. When they didn't get pregnant right away, they chalked it up to the stress of healer and wandmaking training. Soon enough, they welcomed Wiley to the world. The first of many children they had planned.
Caoimhe suffered several miscarriages after Wiley and was devastated when she was given the news that an exposure to a magical virus while working might have made made it impossible to have more kids. A side effect that many who had been exposed were experiencing. Hopeful that the healers would develop a treatment, the Dempseys tried to come to terms with the idea that they might be a family of three. When the war started, they felt relatively sheltered from the worse living on the opposite side of the North Channel. They traveled to London for their jobs, but their families cared for Wiley. It was manageable. Until Ollivanders wand shop was attacked. Mac's boss packed up their stock that day. He returned to Romania, leaving Mac with galleons to maintain the shop as long as possible but telling him to run if he felt any threat.
The Death Eaters came looking and found an empty store. Mac's skill at disillusionment charms saved the day, but it was the sign that operating in the open was over. He worked with Gavin Ollivander to coordinate wand exchanges to get wands in the hands of those who had lost theirs and was taken from them from the ministry. The Dempsey's took in Gavin and his siblings during that time. Wiley grew to think of them as her older siblings even after the war. The families remained close.
Caoimhe had her own struggles during the war. The Chief Healer at Saint Mungo's was insistent that healers didn't choose sides. They healed anyone who showed up in need. She did her best to remain objective, wondering if anyone would ever be held responsible. The hospital's administration successful maintained its neutrality, allowing them to stay open. The worst night of her life was the night the war ended at Hogwarts. So many witches, wizards, beings, and beasts were casualties that day. She volunteered to go to the school and help the Matron triage and transport the wounded.
Summer was nearly over by the time she realized she was pregnant against the odds. It was a gift in the midst of so much trauma. Wiley was ready to be the big sister. She didn't realize she'd be welcoming a total of six siblings before she'd head to Hogwarts. The house grew a new room after each birth and the home life was basically idyllic. Sure there were arguments. Most of the arguments were about ideas not actions. Wiley didn't have time for words so it never really bothered her. She loved helping her mum around the house and was sad to get on the train to leave it all behind.
Character History (early years)
The sorting hat was barely on Wiley's head before it proclaimed Gryffindor. She was so proud to join the table of cheering housemates. Her time at Hogwarts was an awakening for Wiley. She found likeminded people in Gryfindor and it finally became clear she was different from the rest of her family. In fact, she watched or heard from each of her siblings, all Ravenclaws the reinforced what she learned her first year. Wiley understood she was unabashedly a Gryffindor from a family of Ravenclaws. She was condemned to love and be loved by eccentric intellectuals that didn't understand there were situations that called for bold action.
Character History (Adult Years)
By the time she graduated the summer of 2011, Wiley knew exactly who she was, innovative, progressive, and shamelessly revolutionary. Despite that bluster, she was a humanitarian, dedicated to making the world a better place. Having been an only child for the formative years followed by the oldest of so many, she's learned to be independent and a caretaker. It just depended on the needs of those around her.
Wanting to travel and use her natural ability in charms and spell casting, she worked freelancing as a curse breaker for anyone needing to recover lost possessions. Expecting it to give her a few years of adventure and experience. It hadn't been the plan to make it a life long career. Her first few assignments went according to plan. Bringing back treasured family inheritances to victims of Death Eater thievery. It was those early assignments that she realized how much work there was to do in the profession. On her third commission she encountered pillagers who weren't inclined to give back their stolen goods. In her attempt to break a difficult curse, she set off some kind of alarm. She was out numbered and quickly pinned down. Her wand was broken by a hex and she thought her life was over, when she produced a shield charm in time to block a jinx. It was enough to spur her on, and find an escape. Running on foot with a broken arm, she was forced to evade the her pursuers using wit alone. Something she couldn't wait to tell her family of Ravenclaws if she got out alive. That it turned out wit could save the day. Eventually she exhausted their search efforts and she was able to make it to a portkey she knew about. That encounter was all the proof she needed to learn as much wandless magic she could. She traveled to the Mountain of the Moons to find a teacher from Uagadou who could train her. The school was one of the few places she knew about where wandless magic was the norm.
Not having much luck in convincing anyone to take her on, she learned there was a professor who wanted to recover a family relic in a ancient, protected catacomb. Desperate to learn from them, she risked her life, fighting animated corpses, cursed traps, and one final cursed sphinx, she emerged with the amulet in hand. This display earned her the trust of the Deputy Headmaster who took three years to immerse Wiley in intensive wandless magic training. They stuck mainly to charms. Spells she'd need for both defense and offence. By the end, she was sure she'd never be in the same position she had been in with the thieves. Returning to London, she was sought out by the Goblins to work for Gringotts as a curse breaker. She accepted and hasn't looked back. Her job was one life threatening task after another and she wouldn't have it any other way.
