Caoimhe Callanan grew up being regaled by stories of her druid ancestors. Living in Ballintoy near their ancestral land, the reminders were all around her of the magic she inherited. From the tilted Cromleach at Mount Druid where the druid convinced the muggles the tilt was to drain the blood of their unwilling sacrifices (a tale as much to keep the muggles away as much to mess with them) to the fables Giants’ Causeway trodden by the giants who allied with the druids and helped them win their ancient wars. The Callanans had traditions beyond the pureblood nonsense of the wizarding world and she was made to promise to honor them.
Cormac knew his own history just as well as Caoimhe knew hers. He grew up surrounded by paintings of the legacy that grew from Cathbad the chief druid in the court of King Conchobar mac Nessa. The stories of each descendent was told at every family gathering.
Both Ravenclaws, the pair knew it was destiny that brought them together and they were nearly inseparable from the very start of their friendship. Both families were thrilled when the couple announced their engagement. They were ready to settle down with a large family. When they didn't get pregnant right away, they chalked it up to the stress of healer and wandmaking training. Soon enough, they welcomed Wiley to the world. The first of many children they had planned.
Caoimhe suffered several miscarriages after Wiley and was devastated when she was given the news that an exposure to a magical virus while working might have made made it impossible to have more kids. A side effect that many who had been exposed were experiencing. Hopeful that the healers would develop a treatment, the Dempseys tried to come to terms with the idea that they might be a family of three. When the war started, they felt relatively sheltered from the worse living on the opposite side of the North Channel. They traveled to London for their jobs, but their families cared for Wiley. It was manageable. Until Ollivanders wand shop was attacked. Mac's boss packed up their stock that day. He returned to Romania, leaving Mac with galleons to maintain the shop as long as possible but telling him to run if he felt any threat.
The Death Eaters came looking and found an empty store. Mac's skill at disillusionment charms saved the day, but it was the sign that operating in the open was over. He worked with Gavin Ollivander to coordinate wand exchanges to get wands in the hands of those who had lost theirs and was taken from them from the ministry. The Dempsey's took in Gavin and his siblings during that time. Wiley grew to think of them as her older siblings even after the war. The families remained close.
Caoimhe had her own struggles during the war. The Chief Healer at Saint Mungo's was insistent that healers didn't choose sides. They healed anyone who showed up in need. She did her best to remain objective, wondering if anyone would ever be held responsible. The hospital's administration successful maintained its neutrality, allowing them to stay open. The worst night of her life was the night the war ended at Hogwarts. So many witches, wizards, beings, and beasts were casualties that day. She volunteered to go to the school and help the Matron triage and transport the wounded.
Summer was nearly over by the time she realized she was pregnant against the odds. It was a gift in the midst of so much trauma. Wiley was ready to be the big sister. She didn't realize she'd be welcoming a total of six siblings before she'd head to Hogwarts. The house grew a new room after each birth and the home life was basically idyllic. Sure there were arguments. Most of the arguments were about ideas not actions. Wiley didn't have time for words so it never really bothered her. She loved helping her mum around the house and was sad to get on the train to leave it all behind.
The sorting hat was barely on Wiley's head before it proclaimed Gryffindor. That would be the very last Dempsey to be sorted anywhere besides Ravenclaw. Aisling idolizes her curse-breaking oldest sister. Even thought Wiley was already out of the house by the time Aisling was born the Dempsey siblings are a close knit bunch. They still all get together for Christmas holidays every year despite the sheer number of people as the families grow. They have to make temporary housing on the Dempsey farm when they all gather.
Aisling had a much different upbringing than her older siblings, the second to last, her mum likes to call her feral because every chance she gets to be outside with nature, she takes it. Maybe if she had been born years earlier her parents wouldn't let her get away with her outings into the nearby forests, but Aisling is pretty sure they just exhausted. There are healers in the family anyway, what could go wrong? Everything around her is an adventure and a wonder. The imagination inside Aisling's mind is endless. But don't worry, you won't wonder what's she's thinking. She'll tell you in painstaking detail.
Of course she was sorted into Ravenclaw, though she wonders often what it would be like to be so very brave like her Gryffindor sister, or loyal like her Hufflepuff friends, or cunning like her Slytherin ones. Some days she tries to pretend she's from a different house and approach her life like she's one of them. It always leads to a grand time of expanding her understanding and will leave her severely disappointed to think that revelation actually means she really grabbed the opportunity like a Ravenclaw after all and pursued knowledge through experience. One day though, she'll achieve her dream of pretending right. Aisling doesn't care much for rules for the sake of rules. If she can reason her way around them, they weren't very good to begin with. This has earned her a seat in detention many times. Which never really works on her because what an journey detention can be if you do it right.
