FAMILY HISTORY
As it was, Ruth Finch had always been fascinated by muggles. The daughter of wizard father and a long forgotten about muggle mother that she hadn't seen since she was five or younger, she'd always lived in the Wizarding World and watched muggles from the outside, much like watching snow fall down in a snow globe. Ruth had never ventured far outside of the Wizarding World. She attended Hogwarts, did her time, studied magic, excelled in her craft, and became a Herbologist, farming the much needed magical greenery needed in potions and charms. But it seemed that Ruth was never quite satisfied with life in the Wizarding World... And so she ventured elsewhere. She moved from her tightknit family of magic to the world of the muggle. She moved to a quaint, small town in Scotland. Killin, Scotland, population of 650 people.
Louie had grown up his entire life in Killin. He'd been born there, just like his father, and his father's father, and his father's father's father. They were a family that had been rooted in Killin for millennia and planned on staying that way. Louie enjoyed his quaint little life-- Simplicity, after all, was the key to happiness, right? Well, perhaps not so...
Ruth had other plans when she stumbled into the quaint little librarian.
"I am..." Ruth was out of breath, winded, and blonde locks dishelved in every direction. "I am looking for books..." She said, panting and patting on her chest, as if that would help aid the lack of oxygen in her lungs. Louie looked frazzled, wide eyes and a surprised expression. He'd always been a bit awkward. "Books. We got em. It's in the name. Finch Books and Library for the Common Folk." He smiled at the woman with an awkward look. He was nervous. Ruth thought it was charming. She flashed her own grin, nodding her head.
"Not to worry my boy, I can read." He let out a nervous laugh which came out more forcefully than he wanted. "I'm hoping you have a specific one..."
And so their friendship-- and eventual romance--blossomed.
Louie was enamored with Ruth. She was spontaneous and bold and courageous and wild. He made Louie feel alive and brave. She made him realize life was so much more than the spine of a book, but the words... She made life seem like it was bright and filled with wonder-- And he soon realized it was. Completely fallen in love, Ruth married the muggle and soon enough, the two were with child…
PERSONAL HISTORY
Orla’s start into the world was a rough one. Despite the loving and affectionate household she was born into, she was prone to illness, making the first few years of her childhood rather turbulent. As a child, if she was known for anything, it was the smile on her face. She smiled when she scraped her knee, declaring it was part of adventuring when she and her father would explore in the woods. She would smile when it rained. One might think Orla Finch would have wrinkles by the time she turned twenty by just how much smiling she did.
Perhaps it was the environment she was raised in, with a loving mother and father and a strong relationship with her brother, or perhaps she was born with her incessant and near blinding optimism. Positive as a pea, Orla had her stubbornnes to her. Having Caspian Finch and Orla Finch in the same household was like having two fighting cats that refused to back down. Caspian, born with the same unwavering resolve as his younger sister, demanded to win because he was older, while Orla refused to give in because she was younger. Each fight, disagreement or argument was just as fiery and passionate as the next. From the outside, the siblings looked like they hated each other, but the Finch’s knew different.
Orla and Caspian, though intensely disagreeable, were best friends. Attached at the hip and with a year of age difference, the two Finch’s could be found causing trouble and getting up to no good in their youth. In the years leading up to their inevitable departure to Hogwarts, it was near impossible to have a moment of peace in the Finch households. It was mostly Caspian dragging his little sister around, and while Orla wouldn’t admit it… She enjoyed the trouble at times.
All this to say… That was transferred over into their years at Hogwarts. Though Orla had matured and strayed away from her brother's rambunctious nature, it seemed she was often dragged into mischief at Caspian’s beckon. She caught him sneaking into the kitchens one night and was inevitably given detention trying to stop him. Caspian would pull a prank, Orla would try her hardest to prevent it, and the two would yet again be in trouble. It was a cycle that would continue until their fourth and fifth years.
Well established as students of Hogwarts, the two were respectively excelling at Hogwarts in their own way. Orla with her academics, as she possessed a particular talent towards green things that grew, and Caspian with potions and Quiddtich. As time often did and growing up, the siblings had drifted apart. But not enough to become strangers. Caspian would still poke fun at Orla if he caught wind of a crush or toss trouble her way when it felt like it, and Orla tried her darndest to keep Caspian in line and out of detention.
That Christmas… Everything changed.
The two siblings had boarded the Hogwarts Express dozens of times. They’d returned to Hogwarts dozens of times… But when Orla went to look for Capsian aboard the train… He was nowhere to be found. Owl after owl was sent between parent and child looking for her oldest brother but nothing turned up. Caspian Finch was gone without a word. And Orla was convinced she’d lost a brother.
Holding out hope as she did, it quickly dwindled as the months went by, losing any faith her brother would turn. Though she wished to smile and continue anticipating his return, it diminished in her last year at Hogwarts along with much of her light.
Much of her time at Hogwarts was spent studying, aspiring to something beyond the school. Her hope and optimism had kept her plowing through, but by the time she’d departed the school, rumors of the Dark Lord’s return had crushed part of her. Perhaps Caspian had been killed by a Death Eater. Maybe he’d fought back. Caspian was rather resilient and outspoken… They consumed her. The mystery of her brother's disappearance and probable death was crushing.
It took Orla a very hard year to recover from the sudden mystery of her brother. After the funeral, held with no body, she drew back from the others– she was icy, cold, even unapproachable. The sunshine child that once smiled even when the sky was filled with clouds had become the darkness that consumed Earth at night. It was the first time in her life she’d ever been alone– and not only that, the rumors began to swell about the nature of her brother’s accident. A particularly vicious Slytherin, Torin, made her life a living hell, reminding her constantly that her brother was never coming back– it was all hell, until she met a young man that changed the course of her entire life.
Tristan was sweet, especially for a Slytherin. There was a certain gentleness to him that Orla couldn’t put into words. Unfortunately, Tristan was roommates with her tormentor– there wasn’t a chance in hell he would ever want anything to do with her after hearing the terrible lies spread by Torin. But despite the odds being against them, a snowy evening, Tristan and Orla both stumbled upon a finch with a broken wing– as they healed the creature, they became closer and closer.
Finally, in Orla’s seventh year, at the Winter Ball, they kissed for the first time and catapulted into a relationship– and disaster. Her obsession with finding her brother led her straight towards danger– after venturing into the Forbidden Forest, fighting with a horrible spider, and ending up in St. Mungos, one might think her desire for finding her brother would cease– but not so, in fact Orla became so desperate to solve the mystery that she became an Auror with the Ministry of Magic for a chance to find the truth behind his disappearance. That’s when she and Tristan called it quits– Orla was reckless, consumed by finding Cassian.
Nearly a year into the job, she has yet to find any threads that have led her to finding her brother, but she continues to persist. She will find him– whether he’s still living, or not.
