finch had gotten himself up early that morning to ready for the day - no classes, and nearing christmas break was the perfect time to utilize the expanse of the grounds to train. the holidays always felt … disconnected for him, and he tried to enjoy them in other ways. before leaving, the boy grabbed his fur shawl and secured it around his shoulders, nodding a goodbye to his bunk mates as they waved him off. everyone was readying to leave, but finch was still undecided on if he’d return home this year at all. lords, he could almost feel his sister smack his arm for merely considering it, but the reality was that there was nothing to return to.
it seemed more normalized nowadays. as years passed, more students stayed behind. families joined them at the castle, instead of home, or rented in the village. the muggle world was still unsafe, he assumed. the thought made him snort out loud as he made way through the halls and to the great entrance, broom fastened around his chest with a thick leather belt. finch passed a few friends along the way and had idle chat, though not for long. the rest of his venture was quiet, finding a low traffic road art of the lawn to mount. finch loved the way the bitter winds nipped his ears. adjusting to the cold was easy for him; belgium was brisk most of the time, even with its summer skies. the boy whistled a tune for most of his ride, and after he’d finished his times, he decided a cool out was needed. he hovered above the courtyard for a time, making his landing to sit him atop a bench.

“I don’t want to hear it,” Rose snapped, ripping her arm out of Callum’s grasp. He was begging her to stay with him at the castle for the Holidays, but she wasn’t about to stay for a boy. Their thing was fun and exciting, but that’s all she wanted it to be. What would it say if she stayed for him? No, she wasn’t going to stay and she was second guessing their entire relationship. She had started to walk away from him, but he grabbed her arm again. Rosie whipped around to glare at him, tearing her arm away from him again. “Actually, I’m thinking we should stop seeing each other. You clearly can’t take no for an answer.” She should have just stuck to snogging Nate - he’d never act like this. And she thought Callum was the same. How stupid she felt right now. “Leave. Me. Alone,” she hissed before turning on her heel and walking briskly away from him. This time, he didn’t follow her. Thank the Gods for that.
The icy winter air hit her as she stepped out into the courtyard and her breath caught in her chest. Rose took a steadying breath and beelined for a bench on the far side of the empty courtyard. Callum didn’t mean anything to her, but her hands were shaking as the adrenaline surged through her veins. She just needed a few minutes to cool down. The audacity of that boy, thinking he could trick her into a relationship. Rose didn’t need a boyfriend; she was content with hooking up. The seat was frigid as she sat down, but it didn’t matter to her. The icy feeling on her bum was enough to distract her from all the emotions swirling around inside her.
Overhead, she could see someone hovering on their broom, but she couldn’t tell who it was. Rose watched for a while, wondering if the person was gonna land or not. After some time had passed, it seemed they were going to. Her bright green eyes followed them as they flew down, recognizing the head of dark hair as he got closer. It was Finch Goldswithe, the Ravenclaw Seeker. He must have just come from the grounds. Rose felt quite envious; she could certainly use a ride right now. “Nice broom,” she called out, rising from her seat and taking a few steps toward him. “Is that a Nimbus?”

he was caught off guard at the voice that came from seemingly out of nowhere, stopping dead in his tracks and turning to face it. finch raised a brow, a smile prickling the corners of his lips when he saw the leaky red tendrils that bounced about and framed her face. it wasn’t often that gryffindor’s chaser approached him, on a bitter day like today no less. “aye,” the boy said in thanks, dipping his head. “right on the mark, ain’t ya?” finch slicked his hair back just slight. “just about killed my savings, but well worth it.” lost in thought for a moment, the ravenclaw’s gaze moved back to rose, aware of the tension lines in her face.
he wasn’t good at reading people, but he could tell something was amiss. nonetheless, it wasn’t his business, right? exhaling a short huff from the cold, he nodded toward the castles entryway just passed the courtyard. “we’ve not been formally introduced, but, i’m finch,” he’d said, matter of factly. he knew she probably knew that already, but his mother taught him too well to be lacking basic mannerisms. “was just about to head to the hall, grab a bite. care to join me?” he pulled his broom closer, an idea hitting the back of his mind.
he wasn’t going to ask at first, but the goldswithe boy looked about, a mischievous smirk finding its way to his face. “unless you think a ride would be more fun.”

A small smirk touched her lips as he confirmed it, a sense of pride spreading through her chest. Quidditch was her life so she knew what she was talking about, but it was nice to know she was still spot on. Her green eyes followed the movement of his hand as he slicked his hair back a little, her smirk deepening as she looked from his hair to his face to his lips and then finally his eyes. She supposed she never really gave Finch a good look before, but he was devilishly handsome. All thoughts of Callum left her mind and in his place was the wizard before her.
“I know my brooms,” she said with a shrug, her hands clasping together in front of her. “Nimbus is good, fast but can veer to the right a little if ridden too hard.” Rose’s gaze moved from the broom back to his face and she stepped a little closer. “It’s a good broom, you chose well.” Her parents saved up for months to get her a Quinn Supernova. It wasn’t customized or anything, but it is a pretty, sleek black walnut broom with black bristles, a gold inlay on the side of the broom. It was her favorite possession.
He told her who he was and she nodded with a smile. Yes, she knew his name and that he was Ravenclaw’s Seeker, but that was all she knew about him. Rose supposed that she was a little busy with her… extracurriculars to even notice him like she was noticing him now. Where had she been? He was fine. “Rose,” she told him, stepping a little closer. Finch mentioned grabbing a bite to eat and she had to admit, she was intrigued. She was shamelessly checking him out, about to say yes when she saw that smirk forming on his lips.
“Unless you think a ride would be more fun.”
A shiver ran down her spine. Rosie smirked at him, her hand dipping into her pocket to pull out her wand. She pointed it at the castle. “Accio Supernova.” She tucked her wand away and held out her hand, waiting a few seconds before it flew from the grounds and smacked into her hand. “Does that answer your question?” Rosie mounted her broom, glancing over at Finch to wink at him. “Catch me if you can.” A bright laugh escaped her as she kicked off and started soaring in the air.

beautiful, and well versed in brooms? finch knew she was a good quidditch player, no doubt, but he couldn't help the way his shoulder dropped as he looked onto her with surprise. he bit the corner of his lip as his head shook, utterly impressed. "you've got an eye, don't you?" the boy mused. he was serious, but his tone was airy, noting rose as she stepped in closer to him. finch wasn't lacking in the attention from classmates, but this felt like the first time someone was looking at him and not through him - the feeling left bubbles in his throat. "rose," he repeated. "i like it."
when she summoned her broom, he looked on with child like wonderment as the sleek black supernova found its way to its keeper adorned with gold. it fits her well, he thought to himself. she wasted no time, and finch liked that about her already. "does that answer your question?" his brows raised, head shaking as he pulled his broom from his back. "catch me if you can!" and with that, finch found himself watching her take off. "oh, love," he whispered to himself, following suit and mounting his nimbus. a throaty yell came from him as he kickstarted himself in the air with whoops and hollers following. his brown eyes fell on the redhead who remained lengths away from him, leaning as forward as the harsh winds would allow to quicken its pace.
"think a head start will do me in?" finch called to her. pulling the nimbus up higher, the boy swooped wide circles behind her and settled on a short strided zig zag to deter the air that was weighing him down. rose was right, afterall, the pull that came from these brooms after a hard ride was quite the downfall.

Why did his voice make her feel so tingly? Rose shuddered, but not from the cold as Finch held her eye contact, a light and airy feeling in her chest. He didn’t back down when she stepped forward, that mischievous glint in his eye pulling her in. She almost felt like she was in a trance, cued into him only. It was strange, but intoxicating. The corners of her lips twitched upwards. The way he was admiring her broom only spread the pride she was feeling, her heart starting to speed up in her chest. Now this… this was fun.
Her laughter was still bubbling out of her as she flew on, leaning forward so her chest was rubbing against the wood of her broom, sailing over the grounds of Hogwarts. Rosie knew that there were skill differences between a chaser and a seeker, the latter relying on speed more than the former. It didn’t surprise her in the least when she glanced back to see him gaining on her. A sharp laugh escaped her as his words reached her. “Wouldn’t dream of it!” she called back out to him, flattening herself on her broom for a burst of speed before jumping up and pulling, hard, on the handle. Rose zoomed left in a wide arc and started heading back toward the courtyard. If she calculated it right, he should be having trouble flipping around by now.
The most exhilarating feeling was flooding through her as she zig-zagged and pulled all her best moves in an effort to outmaneuver him, yet here he was keeping up with her. This was a first for the redhead and she couldn’t help but laugh giddily as she played cat and mouse with him. When was the last time she’s had this much fun? Rose skidded to a stop high above the courtyard, taking a moment to catch her breath as he caught up to her. Her green eyes flashed brilliantly as she looked at him. She didn’t say anything, just stared at him hungrily as her chest heaved and the adrenaline surged through her.

finch had never liked the sound of someone’s laugh so much. the glassy, cold air around them only carried the sound deeper. try as he might, there was no catching up to her, but that didn’t stop him from trying. the boy was once again looking on in wonderment as she glided the sky, becoming less and less focused on catching up; he quite liked the view from right where his broomstick flew the short distance behind her. and of course, she was right, because the nimbus struggled more with each tight right turn he tried to make. finch didn’t let it discourage him any, watching as rose pulled in to the high center the courtyard. “easy, easy, easy,” he said to his nimbus, dipping into place beside her a few feet below.
“tired already?” finch teased, his own breath laboring against the thrumming in his chest. he couldn’t decide if it was the high of the ride or merely rose’s presence that had him feeling woken up. probably both, he thought, leaning his elbows into his broom. “you’re good, i’ll give you that much,” he called toward her. “i don’t know many people who can move like that.”
as a seeker, mobility was everything — he could see why her chosen position made sense, but her skill was advanced if he was being honest with himself. lost in the thought, his gaze fell back to her face, and the look in her eye riled him. he pulled his broom up just enough, reaching his hand out to brush against her knee. “tag, you’re it,” finch whispered and winked. a second later he was swooping down and toward the left, heading straight for the courtyard below.

She couldn’t help the proud smile that overtook her features as he complimented her. Yeah, she knew it but it was always so delicious to hear it. However, he wasn’t going to sell himself short. Rose leveled her gaze on him, her lips pulling into a smirk. “You liked what you saw?” she asked him playfully, not really expecting a response. “You were on my tail like a cursed bludger,” Rose said to him, the fact she was impressed was evident in her voice. “You’re good, too.” Their match wasn’t until May, but she already could tell she’d be distracted once he caught sight of the snitch. She thought she’d like to see him in action more clearly.
Her insides were still fluttering, a smoldering fire in her gut as she watched him. Her head was spinning slightly, but she didn’t have time to think about that because he was flying closer, his deep, brown eyes focused in on her and the anticipation drummed under her skin. Rose leaned in almost imperceptibly as he reached out and… tapped her on the knee.
“Tag, you’re it.”
Rosie didn’t know what she was feeling, but whatever it was it was intense. She knew she wanted him. Today, tomorrow, hell even weeks from now. She was completely baffled by him. He was gone in a second and she scrambled to follow after him, crying out at him as she sped forward. Finch was headed toward the courtyard, but he was still a few lengths ahead of her. Rose leaned forward even more, the icy, bitter air whipping over her face, and she started to gain on him. He wasn’t getting away from her that easily.

what in merlin’s beard was this girl doing to him? finch would have thrown himself to the wolves if she asked him to, that was for sure. it wasn’t like he had never noticed her; she was unmistakable. and she was fun — beyond the so called ‘mischief’ most others would pass off for entertainment. she could hear her closing the distance between them as he headed his nimbus toward the ground. finch leaned left to take off some pressure, chest against its handle, but that was a grave mistake on his part. the boy took a look back at her, and that split second was enough for him to miss his chance to pull up in time.
looking back toward the courtyard ground, his eyes widened. “bloody hell,” he said to himself, throwing his body backward and forcing the brooms head up. his balance became unsteady, and there he was hurtling to the ground. the broom shook with anticipation, and his legs landed straight on a stone bench where he kicked himself back into the air. he thought himself saved, but the nimbus whirled him to the right and threw his body like a rag doll. the fall was short, and he was able to land on his shoulder and roll unto his back. his inky lashes fluttered, the breath thrown straight out of him.
he could see rose treading over him before darkness hit. it was only a minute before his eyes were open again, the dumbest smile spread across his face. “what a ride, aye?” he called to her through unsteady breaths.

There will always be thrill in riding her broom, but this was something else entirely. All the feelings that normally came with flying or playing Quidditch seemed to amplify tenfold as she chased him, her heart racing in her chest. Rose watched as he veered left and she eased into a turn herself, her gaze flicking toward the quickly approaching ground. Finch looked back at her and she called out a warning, leaning back and pulling on her broom to slow down. Whether he heard her or not, she didn’t know, but he seemed like he saw his predicament as soon as he turned around. Rosie leaned forward, picking up her speed again as she raced down toward him, her eyes fixed on him. She was really hoping he didn’t crash and she didn’t really have time to wonder why.
Finch kicked off the stone bench and appeared to have escaped crashing, Rose feeling a wave of relief, when his broom jerked to the right and knocked him off. At least it was a short fall - he’d be alright, she thought as she made her landing. She ambled over to him, rolling her eyes a little as he closed his eyes. He didn’t open them right away, so she took a moment to let her eyes pass over him, taking in the brilliance of his features, the way his muscles were outlined - enough to where she could imagine him without his shirt on - and his strong hands that were resting on his abdomen. He was hot and exciting. Yeah, she definitely liked him.
He opened his eyes, a big, doofy smile falling on his face and echoed her own thoughts back to her. Her lips curled into a smile and she set aside her broom before moving to lay down beside him, her hand resting on the ground beside him, the other lay on top of her belly, rising with each breath. “Yeah,” she breathed, an airy laugh escaping her. What was there to say about it? It was amazing, exhilarating, the most fun she’s had on a broom. She didn’t want to talk about it at the moment, she wanted to do something else. Rose turned her head to look at him through lidded eyes, her smile warming. “You’re really pretty, you know that?”

finch admired her as she secured her broom, and laid down beside him. his head swung slow to find her face, his own still beaming. he let his gaze fall to where there hands rested close to one another. “you’re really pretty, you know that?” finch snapped back into reality, unable to mask the blush as it hit his face, deepening the scarlet that plagued him from the cold. the boy sat up on his elbows, still dumbfounded. he’d never been called pretty before but it made his heart skip a beat (or five). “i could say the exact same thing t’you,” he retorted.
in a moment of … excitement? weakness? finch found himself rolling toward her, resting his free hand on hers over her stomach before leaning in. he hovered just above her for less than a second, taking the plunge to kiss her with no hesitation. his entire body tingled, pulling his free hand to cup the side of her face and move her in closer.

“I could say the same thing t’you.”
Her gaze, which had drifted down to his lips, popped back up to his eyes as a satisfied smile made its way onto her face. Rose was confident borderlining on cocky so she knew she was hot, but it seemed that Finch had never been told he was pretty before judging by the way the color on his face deepened. Her eyes flicked from his eyes to his lips and back again, her desire pretty evident on her features. She was about to roll over toward him, but he beat her to it, her heartbeat racing as the anticipation flooded her veins. His hand covered hers and she laced her fingers with his, leaning in as he did. Her bright, green eyes were fixed on him in the split second their faces hovered before they fluttered shut and she met him in a fiery kiss.
There was an explosion of feeling when their lips met, a hot and heavy warmth spreading from her lips as they moved against his. Finch’s hand came up to cup her face and pull her in and she gave in so easily. Rose squeezed his hand before releasing it, both hands sliding up his arms and around his neck, fingers dancing in the hair at the nape of his neck. She deepened the kiss as she pulled herself closer, pressing her body against his. Over the years, Rosie had earned herself a reputation in the way Nate did. There was a new boy every week, but she never let them get close enough for something more. This was all she knew. But even she had to admit she’s never felt this way snogging someone before. Was it the leftover adrenaline from their chase? Or was it something more?

rose wrapped her arms around his neck, and it was over for him. finch could feel his body become liquid against hers, the sound of his heart thrumming loudly in his ears. he wasn't surprised when she pulled in closer, his hand making its way through her hair to tangle within bright auburn tresses. this was a first; putting his lips on someone and finding himself wanting more. truthfully, the feeling scared the shit out of him, but he pushed it to the side and grounded himself on the thought of her face.
the boy rolled his body back, arm moving to scoop back under her and pull as he sat himself. with his other hand free, he placed it by her ear to bring her into him. in a fleeting moment of bravery, finch pulled back just enough to catch her bottom lip between his teeth ever so gently, releasing it as he finally came back to. his eyes were wide with the same wonderment as when she'd taken off on him some time earlier, a sheepish grin sprawled over his face.
"how 'bout that bite to eat now, huh?"

Finch was driving her crazy. It was unlike anything she’s ever felt before, her entire body was tingling as their lips moved together, a lightness in her chest as they pressed against each other. Rose’s mind was spinning and all she could think about was him. He filled her senses and she was like putty in his hands, willing to do whatever he wanted just so she could be closer to him. What was he doing to her? Part of her was scared of the intensity of these feelings, but the rest of her was filled with a thrilling anticipation. She felt like this was the start of something exhilarating. Rose practically clung to him as he rolled back and sat up, her body moving effortlessly with his, and when his teeth caught her bottom lip a soft moan escaped her. Her eyes fluttered open and leveled onto him, her lips thrumming deliciously, her chest rising as she caught her breath. What was it about him that was drawing her in?
“How ‘bout that bite to eat now, huh?”
Rose let out an amused breath of air, her gaze flickering over his face for a moment before she leaned in to kiss him again, slowly this time. Her lips moved against his for a few beats before she leaned back and nodded, color rising to her cheeks. Her heart was still beating rapidly in her chest, a strange fluttering in her belly that felt a bit like butterflies, and she knew she was in trouble. It didn’t matter to her right this second because she wanted more and nothing was going to stop her from getting it. Rather reluctantly, she extracted herself from his arms and stood up, bending over to pick up her broom. Rosie felt the absence of his touch keenly, but she tried not to let it bother her as she turned back to him. She waited for him to collect his own broom before walking with him to the Great Hall. It was probably lunch by now, she didn’t have her watch to check.
“Thank you for this,” she told him as they entered the warmth of the castle, casting a glance over at him. “I… really needed that. It was a lot of fun,” she added with a wink, a bright smile pulling at her lips. It was the most fun she’s probably ever had, but she wasn’t about to admit that out loud. Just his mere presence was enough to excite and entice her, a growing fire spreading through her from the depths of her heart. She still wanted him. That was new. “A little bird told me Carter and Lydia are throwing a party after the holidays,” she told him suggestively, glancing back over at him. “Honestly, it’s about time we had a party and this one sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun…” Rose was trying to ask him out to it, but she didn’t want to come right out and say it.

she kissed him again, and finch was glad to lean into her. this time was different, he said to himself. the three beats went rhythmically with the sound of his heart, almost throwing him off kilter completely. when they parted, the boy was awestruck, eyes darting across her face. he was unashamed watching her stand because it was the first time he had ever appreciated something for its beauty. he didn’t just like her body (though it was surely a bonus for the young man) but her mind. to hear her speak was for earths to stop rotation just for the mere possibility of hearing her voice.
rose kelly, you will be my undoing.
finally, finch followed suit and got himself up off the ground. once his broom was in hand, they started for the castle. his chest was still pounding, but he had gotten control of his breathing, wiping stray hairs from his cheek as the warmth swarmed over him in crossing the threshold, gaze finding her as she spoke. “you don’t need to thank me for that,” finch replied. “it wouldn’t have been so much fun if it wasn’t with you. i don’t remember the last time i laughed like that,” there was a small chuckle that ensued. he raised his brow when she started talking about the party. he nodded, the connotation of her words playing back in his mind.
“that is something, isn’t it? after the year we’ve had, we deserve a party,” finch said. he came to a halt, treading carefully with his next words, sneaking his pinky to wrap around hers and pull her to a stop. “i think you’re rather brilliant, rose. will you join me, then?” he was bloody nervous, but the thought of being at that party with anyone else was gut wrenching. “spare me of not having to bare the cold alone?” finch dipped his body and leant down to kiss her knuckle, eye still keenly up at her.
