“INCENDIO!”
it was the last thing he remembered before fluttering his eyes open. JJ was no longer in the back turn of the alley, but in the backseat of a car. there was a deep ache in his head, and he noted that it felt like this arm had a pulse of its own. he looked about the car, two people in full cloaks whispered amongst themselves, leaning in. ones eye caught onto him, and they slammed on the brakes. JJ flew forward with a loud groan, his consciousness fluttering again. one of the men got out and came to his door, throwing it open and grabbing him by the collar of his faux leather jacket. he tossed JJ to the side like a rag doll, wasting no time to get back into the car.
the screeching of tires sent panic down his spine, though he couldn’t react fast enough, only catching a glimpse of the tail lights. he recognized them to belong to an american mustang, trying to make a mental note to remember that for later. he’d inevitably have to give a statement, wouldn’t he? gods, JJ hated this choice of work already. the thought passed, and the man realized he was standing alone, unsure of his surroundings until he forced his tired body to turn itself. the wizard pulled his wand from his pocket and with his last bit of strength, apparated himself to the only familiar place he could think; st. mungos.
with a whoosh, JJ landed unto the ground with a great thud. around him was an empty hallway, and he felt frustrated with himself. the wizard grabbed hold of the wall, pulling himself back up on his feet. he felt like this shouldn’t be happening to him, right? he was an auror in training. two measly weeks in and this was how things were going. JJ eased himself along the wall and to the closest door he could find, slipping through with ease. a woman peeked up at him from the check in area, her eyes immediately drawn to the burn that seared down the length of his arm.
“i think i need a doctor,” JJ said, hitting the ground a mere second later.

“Cara, why don’t you go down to the waiting room and grab the next patient?”
With a nod of her head, the brunette left the fourth floor and headed down for the main lobby. Training wasn’t so bad, she thought as she traveled down the steps. She started out doing more observing than anything, but her preceptor had been letting her do a lot more recently. It was rewarding work and part of her couldn’t wait until her training was over and she was on her own. Cara continued to think about that as she made her way to the lobby.
She had just reached the first floor when there was a crack of Apparition and she heard some gasps. Cara picked up her pace, turning the corner to find a wizard caked in blood and badly burnt. “I think I need a doctor,” he said before he lost consciousness and fell to the floor. Her heart leapt to her throat and she rushed forward, falling to the ground to cradle the man’s head in her lap. “Can I get some help here?” she cried out to the people staring. The receptionist scrambled to summon some orderlies and Cara focused her attention back on the wizard in her arms. There was a gash above his eyebrow, dried blood caked down the side of his face with fresh, bright red blood pooling. His arm was charred and her heart lurched in her chest. Before long, a few orderlies appeared to help her lift him off the ground and get him to the fourth floor.
“What happened?” Lainey’s eyes were wide when they rushed him into his own room, following them inside. “He collapsed in the lobby,” Cara explained, her attention still focused on him as the orderlies lowered him onto the bed. Lainey nodded and looked him over before glancing back up at Cara. “Okay, you can take care of him. I’ll be right outside if you need me.” Cara nodded almost imperceptibly, her fingers gently removing his clothes from his burn. Her heart was racing and her stomach twisted at the sight of him, but she was determined to heal him. Lainey and the orderlies left her alone with him and Cara grabbed a washcloth and warm water as well as a clotting potion. With everything in hand, she sunk into the side of the bed and started to carefully wash the blood from his face.
Her hazel gaze watched him while she worked, passing over his face and body to look for any more injuries. When she didn’t find any, her eyes found their way back to his face, heat slowly working its way to her cheeks. He was handsome, his long lashes fluttering against his skin as he started to regain consciousness. Cara cooed softly as she applied the potion to the cleaned gash above his brow. “It’s okay,” she told him quietly. “You’re safe.”

for a while, things were quiet. he couldn't hear anything outside of his head, though he could feel the way his body whooshed about as they moved him. he could see the masked faces of those men, and the sound of their tires taking off replayed in his mind about a hundred times as the witch was working on cleaning his wounds. eventually, he could feel the pressure in his eyebrow, and the wetness down his cheek. JJ was fighting to open his eyes when finally, they fluttered back to. he exhaled a sharp gasp, blue eyes searching frantically around the room. “it's okay, you're safe,” a voice cooed to him. JJ lifted his head, pain wracking through his brain and he quickly settled himself back down.
“am i at st. mungos? did i make it?” the wizard rasped, his vision still blurry against the bright lights. JJ closed his eyes once again, now focused on the pain in his arm as he tried to raise it. “what's happened? did anyone follow me in here?” he rambled. this time, as his eyes opened, he blinked slower. sitting up just slight, despite how it felt, JJ looked down to his arm as it lay. “christ, is my arm okay?”

He looked around wildly for a moment and Cara reached out to fold her hand over his, telling him he was safe. The accent she wasn’t expecting. He was clearly American, but there was a twang to his voice that she found appealing. She opened her mouth to respond, but he continued with more questions and she shut it with a smile, waiting for him to finish before speaking. It must have been a shock to wake up like this. He took notice of his arm and she breathed in through her nose and sat up a little. “It’ll be okay. I will have to work on that in a moment, but I need to make sure you didn’t get a concussion. Can you tell me your name?”
While he spoke, Cara ignited her wand and waved it slowly back and forth in front of his eyes as she watched his pupils react. Satisfied that he did not suffer any head trauma, she leaned back and extinguished the light. “Well, Joshua your head is fine. That cut above your brow is almost done healing.” Her gaze fell back onto his bright blue eyes, a warm smile touching her lips. She watched him for a moment before she leaned over the side of the bed and reached into the cupboard, pulling out a small vial. Cara handed it to him with an encouraging nod of her head. “For the pain. I have to work on your arm now.” Waiting until he handed the vial back to her so she could discard of it, she gingerly removed his jacket. “Do you remember what happened?” she asked him softly, glancing up at him as she waved her wand over his arm, going back and forth until the burn slowly started to disappear.
