Break was over and everyone was back at Hogwarts. They had to exit their little bubble all too soon and Rose was sad about it. The last two weeks were an absolute dream, but that was part of the problem, wasn’t it? She liked Finch too much. She had never met someone quite like him and that was honestly scaring the shit out of her. Rose put off thinking about this for two whole weeks, but the school was populated again and the expectations of the real world were starting to set in. They had the party tonight and while she was happy to go with Finch, she was also kind of dreading it. She wasn’t girlfriend material and she didn’t want to lead him on. But Gods… to feel his hands, his lips on her. There wasn’t a strong enough word for that feeling.
The sun had set and it was time to get ready. Rose stood in front of the floor length mirror, her fingers tracing the ring on her finger. She looked at it closely, a whirlwind of emotion stirring up in her. He passed it off as something he bought in Hogsmeade, but… something told her it was more serious than that. Part of her wanted to take it off and hide it away somewhere, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. Rose let out a heavy sigh, her hands falling to her sides as she tore her gaze away from it and looked at herself in the mirror. She smoothed her hands down her dress before tugging her leather jacket closer to her chest. It was a frigid night, but they promised a bonfire.
After tucking her wand in her pocket, Rose left her dorm and subsequently the Gryffindor common room. As she stepped out of the portrait hole, she looked up to see him waiting for her. Her heart sped up in her chest, butterflies fluttering in her stomach as she took him in. He was quite literally the handsomest boy she’d ever seen. “Hey,” she breathed, stepping to him and resting her hands on his chest. “You escorting me?” Finch was such a gentleman, she really didn’t deserve it. A faint blush rose to her cheeks and she leaned in to kiss him slowly. They broke apart and headed to the Forbidden Forest, talking all the while.
The party was in full swing by the time they got there, her hand wrapped snugly around his bicep. She wanted to hold his hand, but… that was too real right now. Rose smiled up at him, giving his arm a tug. “Let’s get something to drink, yeah?” She led him to the bar table and she snatched up a firewhisky. Without much thought or care, she knocked the whole drink back and picked up another, wincing at the burn. Her heart was racing and her body was vibrating with nerves. Rose had never cared what people thought of her before, but for some reason the thought of others thinking she was in a relationship had her anxious. “Better.”

finch was laughing with a few friends as he finished up pulling his outfit together, looking into the mirror one last time with a hand wisping through his hair. the boy was excited; this party had been long awaited. even before rose, talks had been going on about after christmas festivities. he was almost surprised to know how many people there would be, but when everyone returned the castle had been brought back to life. still, he couldn’t shake the uneasiness that was brewing in his chest at the thought of seeing rosaline dressed up for such an occasion.
his outfit was simple, and the boy eventually made his way from the ravenclaw common room, finding his girl with ease. that was another anxiety within him … she wasn’t technically his, was she? the last two weeks had been a blur of muddied feelings, he’d realized sometime before break ended. it was no secret that rose kelly had done everything in her power to avoid a relationship. finch wondered if he was different, or if he would have to find out the hard way. he wanted her, that much was clear, but finch wasn’t the type to push boundaries. and gods was she beautiful he thought to himself.
the kiss felt obligatory. ”i wouldn’t want it any other way,” he reminded her. finch still smiled and melted into her as he always did, and on their way to the forbidden forest there was much to talk about. the chill of the air nipped at his face, every so often stealing glances of rose’s face. there was a smile hanging off the corners of his lips the entire way there.
once they arrived, finch looked about the area and to his friends, making small waves in their direction. his eyes fell unto rose as she said they should head for drinks, noting the way she avoided his hands. ”show me the way,” he said, following closely behind. a few of his fellow ravenclaw looked to him with a quiet question in their eyes, and finch coiled into himself as they approached. with ease, the girl downed the firewhisky, and he chuckled with a small shake of his head.
finch reached down for his own, taking a swig as he turned back to the other partygoers. ”full crowd, yeah? i’m kind of impressed.”

What was wrong with her? Here she was with, objectively, the hottest boy in school who she was kind of crazy about and she was worried about what everyone else might think. Rose brought her drink to his lips for a swig, savoring the burn as it traveled down her esophagus. Finch commented on the party and she hummed softly in response, her gaze sweeping the area and noting all their classmates mingling. “Yeah, me too.” The turnout was amazing. She spotted some of her friends over by the bonfire and she smiled and waved at them when they met her gaze. Rose wanted to enjoy this party, but her damn mind was making it hard to do so. Is this really out of the ordinary for her? To show up at a party with a good looking guy? Perhaps she should loosen up a bit and just focus on Finch. Why was this so difficult?
A group of Ravenclaws came to get themselves drinks, Rose moving closer to Finch to get out of their way, when one of them - a blonde haired witch Rose didn’t really know - smiled sweetly at Finch. “Looking good, Goldswithe,” she cooed. Rose’s gaze snapped to her, a scowl falling on her features and her grip on him tightened. “Too good for you,” she snipped before pulling him away, her hand slipping from his arm to his hand, lacing her fingers with his. “Come on, let’s find a quieter corner.” The terrible green monster called jealousy was crawling up her insides, a flush of anger running through her. Once they were far enough away from that crowd, she turned to Finch. Rose pulled him close and pressed her lips against his for a heated kiss. Despite her anxieties, she wanted him to be hers and no one else’s.

for a brief few minutes, finch felt like things had smoothed out. he grinned in response to her, taking in the group of people just the same as she did. a few of his friends seemed to be eyeing him carefully, but he paid them little mind. he noted the girls that were approaching, well acquainted with a few of them from the common room or their classes, and happily made motion to greet them. “looking good, goldswithe,” the blonde announced. vera was never subtle, and finch immediately looked to rose for an out. he didn’t expect her to chide in so quickly, a look of surprise on his face as he waved a solemn apology to the other in a fleeting moment of guilt, and glided off behind her as she joined their hands and lead the way.
“rose?” finch inquired. the redhead gave him no time to react, pulling him in and kissing him like nobody was watching. the boy hummed against her lips, and he forgot his worries. he wrapped his free arm around her waist, but didn’t remain there long. finch lifted his chin up just slight, his gaze dancing across her face. “you’re beautiful when you’re angry,” he commented, flashing her a toothy grin. then, he decided to take the rest of his drink with ease, eyes shifting toward the drink table.

There was no way in hell that she was going to let some little bitty think she could take a shot at her man. You know, her man for now. Or at least that was what Rose was telling herself. They weren’t in a relationship, this wasn’t that serious, but something about seeing - what was her name? Veronica? Whatever, something about seeing that bitch flirt with Finch made her see red. And there was like… this animalistic desire to make it known that he was hers. So when they were on the other side of the bonfire, she kissed him without hesitation. She kissed him how she wanted to. Rose didn’t care who was watching. In fact, she wanted them to see. She wanted everyone at that party to know that she was here, with him.
Finch pulled back a very little bit, his lips spread in a huge grin and her green gaze flickered all over his face, resting back on his smile. It caused butterflies to stir in her gut. She knew then that he liked her. Like, really liked her. Suddenly, the doubt started to seep back in. But when he called her beautiful, she decided she just didn’t give a fuck. She was about to tell him to shut up and dive back in, but he finished off his drink and glanced back at the table. A stupid part of her wondered if he was looking back at whats-her-face, but that would be ridiculous because he had Rose right here. And Rose knew she was better than that Ravenclaw. She finished off her own drink and summoned a half-full bottle of firewhisky from the table. They had plenty, no one would miss it. Rose held it up with her brows raised and an inviting smile on her lips. Without waiting for him to respond, she pulled him toward the creature sanctuary. She was sure they could find a quiet place just to themselves.

the boy saw the expression change in her face, and panicked. what was he doing wrong? in a flash, rose summoned the firewhisky to them. finch chuckled, starting to lift his cup in her direction when she pulled him away again. “are you really about to hull us up in the sanctuary?” he asked, though followed without a care in the world. he still felt anxious, but he pressed on and hummed as they closed in on the door. the gargoyle stared down at them with curious, grave eyes that caused finch to spook. “creepy thing, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” she answered with a laugh. “There’s a place. Just trust me.” While she wanted everyone to know she was there with him, she didn’t want them to see her be as vulnerable as she could get with him. And even though her gut was screaming at her for this, she just wanted to be with him. She wanted that bubble back. Rose looked up at the gargoyle and laughed again, looking back at Finch and stopping. “Scared, Finch?” Her eyes were glinting mischievously. “Cause if you’re scared… we can always go back.” Rose leaned in and whispered in his ear, “But I think you’re gonna want to follow me.”

finch scrunched his nose at her with his own laugh following. “you’re mad,” he reminded her. he turned back toward the door and made the decision to open it, motioning for her to head inside. once they crossed the threshold, his nostrils were filled with the warm vanilla from within - but all was quiet, and nothing but a few candles lit the way. eyebrows raised, finch looked down to rose. “show me the way, my love,” he cooed with a grin.

Was she mad? Probably. But if she was mad, it was all Finch’s fault. He came into her life like a whirlwind, sweeping her up and taking her to someplace she’s never been. He drove her absolutely crazy and she honestly couldn’t get enough of it. So when he opened the door and gestured for her to go in, a bright and happy smile spread across her face. It faltered for just a second when he called her ‘my love’, the anxiety stirring up in her belly again. She decided not to say anything about it and just smiled again before walking inside.
She liked Finch a lot. Like, alot. Rose was trying not to let it get to her as she led him through the building, heading for the door that will lead them back outside. She gnawed on her bottom lip as they walked, her heart pounding in her chest. Dammit, she thought to herself before stopping to face him. “I like you, Finch,” she said softly, offering him a small smile. “I want to keep doing this, but I just want to be, like, super clear.” Part of her really did not want to do this right now, but he called her love and she most certainly did not want to lead him on. “I’m not your girlfriend. I’m not going to be your girlfriend. I just wanted to make sure you knew that.” Gods, she hated herself for doing this.

he had known it was coming. still, nothing prepared him for gut wrenching feeling that hit his stomach when rose stopped them to face him. his eyes searched her face for something, anything. “but i just want to be, like, super clear,” she told him. finch’s breath hitched within his lungs, and just like that, she said it. “i’m not your girlfriend. i’m not going to be your girlfriend. i just wanted to make sure you knew that.” the boys shoulders dropped some, and he cleared his throat with a nod of his head, sweeping back hair from his face. “i know, rose,” he said.
i know that, and i hate you for it, finch said in his mind, because you are my undoing.
finch pulled his gaze away, looking toward the trees. darkness covered most of the grounds, and the soft lull of sleeping creatures could be heard. the boy stepped back just enough, now looking at the door. “we should probably get back to the festivities, yeah? a couple of the boys wanted to play pong.” without a second glance, finch headed back through the door. he didn’t wait to see if rose followed, though he hoped that she would. he just … he couldn’t do it. not after she’d just taken his heart from his chest.

Rose was only telling her truth, something she’s told the dozen or so guys before him, so why did she feel like absolute shit for saying it now? Why was her throat constricting, her heart racing, and her stomach dropping? Because he’s different, the little voice in the back of her head told her. Rose never expected to feel this way for someone else. Honestly, she didn’t know it was even possible. But would that change anything? All she could see in a relationship was someone getting hurt and Rose promised herself she’d never let anyone close enough to hurt her. But seeing Finch’s reaction hurt. Part of her wished she could take it all back.
Finch muttered something about returning to the party and, without waiting for her to respond, turned around and started walking back the way they came. Rose stood frozen for a moment, her green eyes staring longingly at the back of his head. This was not how she wanted this night to go. “Finch!” she called out, following after him at a jog. Her hand reached out, fingers closing around his wrist as she pulled him to stop. “Nothing has to change. I don’t - I don’t want to go back to before.” Tears started to well in her eyes as she gazed up at him, her heart seemingly breaking at that moment. “Can we just… start this night over?”

she stopped him, and while he wanted to shake her off to continue walking, he allowed himself to stay. finch watched her face closely, the conflicting feeling of guilt creeping it’s way to him as he saw the tiny shimmers of tears forming at her waterline. the boy recoiled inwardly at her words, resentment pooling on his tongue and leaving a bad taste. but it was not at her, it was toward himself. somewhere in the last two weeks, finch had hoped rose would change her mind. that she wouldn’t say it.
he didn’t want to change her mind, or cross a boundary she had carefully lain for herself; finch still wanted her to choose him. he was selfish, admittedly, and he knew that.
so he smiled, albeit sadly. “i don’t quite know how to go back from that,” he said quietly. “what of it, then? you aren’t my girlfriend, what do you want to go back to?” finch’s tone was still low, but he was sympathetic to her. he knew it wasn’t easy, and that fact was written across her face. “what are you so scared of?”

Rosaline was upset. Her hands were shaking and she held the bottle close to her chest, pressing into her skin to counter the thudding. What was she doing? If he had been anyone else, she would have let him go without a second thought. But here she was nearly falling apart because it was him. Her bright green eyes were almost pleading, staring directly into his eyes, and heat started to rise in her body, brought on by her embarrassment for acting like some lovesick loser. She was better than this.
His smile brought a pang with it, Rose wanting to reach out and touch his face to let him know she was still here. Her gaze searched his face as he spoke, her insides twisting with anxiety while her heart lurched in her chest. She didn’t know what she wanted, she just knew she didn’t want this. She didn’t want him to walk away from her without even looking back once. Rose opened her mouth to reply, the words dying on her lips. Why was this so hard? She swallowed. “I - I just want to have fun… with you.” She wanted the last two weeks back, to go back to that first day and relive it until she likely died. The tears threatened to spill over with his next words, his image blurring as they filled her eyes. “I don’t know!” Rose sniffed and wiped the tears away. It was a fear so embedded in her that she couldn’t figure out its origin. Her parents had a happy marriage, so why did the thought of commitment cause her heart to leap into her throat? “I don’t know…” she whispered, lowering her gaze.

regardless of what was going on, it was killing him to see her hurt. finch was not a heartless being; but at what cost? could he wave a white flag here, and truly act like it hadn’t happened? he knew the answer was no. the boy swallowed hard, watching rose recluse into herself deeper. “how? how do you not know, rosie? you are so bloody hellbent on the fact that you’re not made for commitment and yet you’ve done everything in your power to be committed these last two weeks,” finch breathed airily, this time his tone was far softer. instead of shoving his hands in his pockets like he wanted, the young wizard leaned in, taking a step toward her and wrapping her up by the shoulders.
tucking her into his chest, finch sighed. he let a hand slide up into the crease of her neck, pressing a pained kiss into her temple. “i am not asking you to be my girlfriend. you are unchanged, i know that. i don’t want you to change that for me, but -” he pulled back just enough, tipping her chin up to look at him. “i won’t wait here forever. i am yours. no title, no responsibility. you do with that information as you will, yeah?” and he meant it. he was here, for now, but not forever. she needed to figure her feelings out, and if that meant not being with him, finch knew he’d have to accept that.

She didn’t know what her issue was. The more she tried to figure it out, the more her body fought back. It was like the reasons why were locked up tight deep inside her and she couldn’t find them no matter how hard she tried. And even if she did find them, would she even be able to break open that cage and get to the heart of it all? Her gaze was fixed on his face, the tears just refusing to leave. Rose felt like she was truly falling apart as she stared at him, her heart aching painfully for just a glimpse of what they once had. The tears escaped their bonds, trickling down her face as he spoke to her, her body shivering. It wasn’t like she was trying to be committed to him over the last couple of weeks, she just refused to think about anything other than him and her. She had soaked up every last moment they had together and still it wasn’t enough. But once the school was populated again… everything changed.
Finch surprised her when he pulled her into his chest and Rose went willingly, pressing her face into his shirt as his arms wrapped around her shoulders. She tried very hard to stop crying, but he kissed her temple and everything in her just broke. Rose struggled to gain her composure, sniffling as he told her he was hers. The words brought both relief and dread with them and her mind was spinning with the jumbled mess that was her thoughts. She blinked up at him, her breathing starting to slow as she took him in. “Okay,” she whispered, the ghost of a smile touching her lips. Rose hesitated momentarily before she leaned in to press a soft, gentle kiss to his lips. She was still upset, her body was still in flight or fight mode, but she knew that, for now, he was still here. For her. The thought brought some anxiety, that little voice in the back of her mind whispering that this wasn’t sustainable, but she ignored it. “Can we - do you want to -” Rose cleared her throat, the emotions of the last few moments making it hard to get the words out. “There’s a place in the sanctuary. We could just be alone.”
