"Look at the page," Lawrence says, reaching out to take Claire's wrist. Her hand raises from the page. "You're thinking too much about it. Now close your eyes."
"But dad..." Claire starts to protest but, reluctantly listens. "Fine."
"Now I want you to visualize the initial. H. Is there anything weird about it?"
"It's a little H," Claire says reluctantly.
"That's right," Lawrence smiles. "He initials in lower case. Now, that H, how many strokes does it take to form?"
"Um, just one?"
"Right," Lawrence releases Claire's wrist. "Now when you open your eyes, I want you to make that H right here on the parchment. Don't think, you already know it. Just sign it. Open your eyes."
Claire's eyes snap open, and she quickly writes a single H on the paper in front of them.
"Perfect," Lawrence says. "Now if you can copy one letter, you can copy them all. Never overthink, C.C. That's when you get in trouble."

“My turn!” Rufio’s small hand reached over and snatched the pen from Claire. He pushed himself in between his sister and his dad. Brielle watched curiously as Rufio’s full attention was on the paper in front of him, fully committed to getting this right. And then he scribbled nonsense over Claire’s perfect h. Unaware of just how horribly he had failed, he grinned up at Larry. Brielle leaned over him and placed a kiss on the top of his head.

"Hey!" Larry yelped, before realizing that it was his little boy interrupting their forging practice. He smiled. "Weren't you with mommy?"

“Rufio wanted to show you his drawing.” Brielle took the crumpled up paper from her son’s little hand and placed it in front of Larry. The four smiling stick figures held hands but he’d drawn Claire’s head bigger than the rest. When Brielle had asked him why, he’d said his big sister was stronger than anyone in the world. She’d thought maybe Rufio was starting to resent that Larry gave Claire more attention but he adored her.

Lawrence threw up his hands. "Will you look at that?" He asked. "We have an artist in the family." He scooped little Rufio up into his lap and held the drawing to inspect it closer. "I was always terrible at drawing, and I wanted to be so good too."
Lawrence smiled up at his wife. "You think it's time to put them to bed?"

“I think that’s a great idea.”
The protests began immediately, both kids clung on to Larry and started to plead for more time. They knew Brielle would never give in. She reached for Rufio and pulled him away from Larry before she leaned down to be eye to eye with Claire. “You’re spending all day with Greer tomorrow. Don’t you think it’s unfair to her if you’re too tired to play? Now, grab daddy’s hand and we’ll go upstairs to tuck you in.”

Putting the children to bed was always a struggle. Little Rufio was easy to work with after the reassurance of a bed time story and a double check of the closet, but Claire had her mother's stubbornness through and through. Lawrence would be lying if he said it didn't frustrate him at all. The night was their time for each other.
But dammit, he loved being a dad.
"Sometimes I feel like we're the best parents in the world," Lawrence said when they exited Rufio's room. "Do you think Claire is asleep, or still fussing? I'll bet she's still fussing."
