And so in the year 2011, two unlikely souls would meet for the first time at a party on the first weekend of the new school year.
Fox hadn’t been to a party since Destin Halladay’s ninth birthday, which, as far as parties went, probably wasn’t the greatest example. That is of course, unless Mazarine’s party would end abruptly during the backyard viewing of Spider-Man 2 when Rusty Coleman peed his pants at the first appearance of Doc Oc. Maybe this is what being a fifth year was all about. Yeah, Fox had spent most of his time at Hogwarts sticking to his housemates and making enemies with anyone still willing to self-apply the title “pureblood.” But this year Fox wanted to try something different. He was going to date a Hufflepuff. At least that’s what Fox told himself, but by the time he got to Hogwarts he found himself slipping back into the old ways, chumming it up with the same old folks. This party was an opportunity to break the cycle. The alcohol came upon him faster than he expected. He blinked.
Even though Fox hadn't planned to drink at the party–it would have been the first time he'd ever touched a drink–he had done some research just in case. He was here to have fun and make sure that his friends didn't get into too much trouble. Pixie dust was all over Hogwarts these days and he just wanted his friends to stay safe. He needed his sobriety. He calculated what he could take based on his weight and metabolism and determined that at least one drink wouldn’t hurt him.
When Fox reached the bar he found it tended by a well-dressed man in a burgundy tuxedo. “Hi, Lloyd,” Fox greeted him. “Little slow tonight?” “Yes it is, Mr. Bishop,” Lloyd played along dryly. “What will it be?”
“One Firewhiskey and Coke, my man,” Fox said.
Lloyd moved efficiently, mixing a tumblr of Firewhiskey and some random ass Coca-Cola this magical school bar was stocked with, and placing the glass in front of the young Gryffindor. Fox took a gulp of the drink, his first ever taste of alcohol, releasing a long sigh that ended in a small whistle. There was a long moment where Fox wrapped his knuckles on the bar top, nodded his head toward the glass, then said, “Mm. That was not good, Lloyd. I’ll have another.”
And though he was a little sleepy after two drinks, it certainly wasn't how he thought being drunk should feel. So he continued.
And there he was now, sitting at the bar having a talk with Lloyd, the Room of Requirement’s bartender.
"Lloyd," Fox said. "I feel a liddle bit in-e-briated."
Lloyd smiled and said, "It's a party, Mr. Bishop. It's good to cut loose every now and then." "So I can have another drink?" "Whatever you desire." "Do you have anything blue?" As Lloyd prepared his next drink, Fox glanced over near the door, blinking back the fuzz in his eyes. His vision cleared slightly as he did this, and suddenly Fox realized that he was staring at the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen.
"Whoa," Fox said. Emilia Montes

Emilia Montes never missed a party; she was never one to turn down alcohol or a chance to have her way with some unsuspecting boy. And where else would she get the opportunity to do both at the same time?
Her plan was to get drunk, and only drunk that night, but when she ran into William Clay on the seventh floor and he held up a small, shiny pack of powder and asked, “Pixie Dust?” Emilia couldn’t resist. Let’s be very clear that Emilia had never tried pixie dust in her life, the most she’d done was take some knotgrass with a friend by the lake as they both looked out for the giant squid. That was kinda cool. This was not.
Emilia’s heart was beating out of her chest by the time she arrived at the party, her skin was glistening from how hot her whole body felt. She stood by the entrance as she took in the room. The music was blasting from every single direction and she couldn’t recognize it so she figured it was some muggle song. There was a crowd of students already gathered around the dance floor, bodies pressed against each other and Emilia swore that they were the reason the room was sweltering. Her hand wiped the beads of sweat off her forehead and she realized how dry her throat was. She needed a drink.
Emilia began to push her way through the crowd. She couldn’t help but notice how some heads were turning to see her. It was something she was used to and she would normally take pleasure in knowing she could be the center of attention but her throat was on fire.
She gave Lloyd a small nod when she reached the bar and curiously watched him mix a drink. Her hazel eyes followed the blue concoction as Lloyd placed it on the bar top for… Emilia turned to her right and she stared at Fox Bishop. Her eyes studied him from top to bottom, taking note of his hair and how soft it looked. Like, she wanted to touch it. That was probably the pixie dust talking.
“What is that?” Her voice was loud so she could get it over the music and she leaned uncomfortably close to Fox. Emilia moved quickly to grab the glass before he could and she proceeded to down it. Fox Bishop

Fox had a few things to check off his list tonight. The first was, of course, attending an honest-to-god non-school sanctioned party. That was an easy enough goal to check off the list. Next was his first dance, ideally with the most beautiful girl he saw. Now, Fox was no novice to romance. He'd been single for a minute, but third year was a wild whirlwind of hand holding and long Hogsmeade walks with Fidelma Finkelbottom. Like all great romances it ended in a spectacular bang, which is to say they forgot about each other sometime in the summer between third and fourth years. But sometimes Fox still dreamed about the life unlived.
Anyway, when he saw Emilia enter the Room of Requirement it was something different. Fidelma may have shared a common interest in middle grade fantasy, but Emilia was just. "Hot," Fox said to no one in particular.
Lloyd watched with his beady little eyes and said, "Perhaps you should talk to her, Mr. Bishop."
"Yeah," Fox said. "But she's not really my type, Lloyd, and I don't really know what I would say."
"May I suggest buying her a drink?"
Fox shrugged. It was a decent suggestion, but it looked like Emilia was interested in anyone else but him at the moment. Fox imagined she was likely looking for one of her psycho Slytherin friends. Fox didn't really have anything against Slytherin house, outside of generations of blood prejudice that were firmly rooted in the culture of the house and couldn't be by a few new laws and school policies, but he did find that they were the toughest cliques to get along with. That never stopped him from trying, though: Fox was always up to a challenge.
Lloyd moved away from Fox to take care of a group of Ravenclaw that had approached the bar, and around the same time Fox became extremely aware that Emilia was coming toward him. For a moment he thought she was coming over to insult him, just the first step in their dance of sharp flirting. But as Emilia slipped in the seat next to his, it occurred to him that she was only looking for a drink.
"What's this?" she pointed to Fox's glass.
Fox may have recognized that Emilia was gorgeous, maybe one of the most gorgeous girls in Hogwarts, but he didn’t know much else about her. Most of the time, Fox had to get to know someone to be attracted to them. His blind spot had historically been, of course, Hufflepuff bombshells. But Slytherin babes? That was someone else’s game.
Fox was eager to try the drink that Lloyd placed down in front of him. It glowed an unnatural blue, like a cold glass of antifreeze. Before he could take the drink, though, said to Emilia, “Lloyd says it’s a Blue Lagoon…hey!”
Fox pouted as Emilia snatched the drink up and downed it. He wasn’t upset for long though, as he soon found himself completely entranced by her. He’d never noticed her hazel eyes, or the way her skin seemed to glow under the right light.
Lloyd returned to top the two off which Fox noted seemed a bit irresponsible for the only present adult, but he hadn't quite ruled out the possibility that Lloyd was some kind of malignant specter. Professor Tannen had recently taught a unit on spooky hotel ghosts and Fox was suspecting everyone now.
Emilia took her glass and leaned in to Fox so that she could get a whisper on over the music. He could feel the heat on her breath as she spoke. "Cheers."
They downed their glasses together and Fox resisted the urge not to cough. It wasn't the most pleasant flavor, certainly, but the more drinks in the more he found himself developing a taste. If Fox was going to be an alcoholic, he would be the best alcoholic.
Lloyd's attention was once again occupied with a growing like of students at the bar, and Fox could see the disappointment on Emilia's face. Was it disappointment or boredom? God, they'd barely shared a word and he was already boring her to death.
He looked Emilia over, trying to think of something he could say to her, and he caught himself admiring her outfit. Without a real frame of reference for party attire, Fox had opted for the fanciest outfit he had at Hogwarts: a blazer over too one of his school shirts, the collar lazily unbuttoned at the top, with a pair of jeans and sneakers to complete the whole "nice but not too nice" look. Emilia was doing laps around him in the wardrobe department and as he considered this he realized that he wanted her.
Was that a drunk thought? Fox couldn't trust that either.
"We're out of drinks," he finally said, taking a glance at the line of students that Lloyd had left to service. "Wait a minute," he said to Emilia, placing his hand on her shoulder as if to hold her in place. Fox stood up ok his stool and placed his knees on the bartop, reaching over and pulling up whatever bottle he could reach.
"Not blue," Fox said, reading the bottle. "How's vodka sound?"

If Emilia had to describe Fox Bishop, she would have little to say. Other than the fact that he always seemed to get a rise out of her housemates. He was very obnoxious and way too confident for his own good. He talked so much and so fast, Emilia already had some trouble translating one language to another in her head, he certainly didn’t help that. So she rarely took the time to speak to him unless she absolutely had to. Maybe she had more than a little to say…
Had Emilia noticed that Fox didn’t seem to melt around her like the other boys? Yes. That was also annoying, who did he think he was? It’s not like she wanted him, she just didn’t like not having that power over him. It bothered her just a little bit but not enough to keep her up at night or enough to keep her from moving on to the next.
Whatever, he wasn’t even that cute.
At all, he’s not cute at all, she corrected her thoughts.
"We're out of drinks," Fox said.
Emilia’s wide eyes were still on his hair and his voiced pulled her back from mindlessly reaching out to touch it. She placed the cold, empty glass on the bar top before she looked back at Fox. She let out an uncharacteristically friendly laugh before nodding at him with a smile on her face.
It always started the same; a boy would tell her she was the most beautiful girl in the room - which obviously she was- and Emilia would entertain the idea of them getting together. After some teasing, Emilia often found a way to either humiliate them in front of their friends or she would break their heart. It really depended on how she felt that day. So which one did Fox Bishop prefer? As Emilia eyed him up and down, she leaned in close to him again and wondered if he even knew what he was doing. His words were as slurred as her thoughts sounded in her head. Her gazed trailed from the hair curl right behind his ear to his cheekbone, down to the curve of his top lip. Why was it so hot in here?
“I need another drink,” she announced, pulling back to give them both some breathing room. Lloyd was too preoccupied with a gang of students on the opposite side of the bar. Emilia’s lips pouted in disappointment.
Emilia let her mind and eyes wander across the room, she could hardly recognize anyone in the haze of the party. People were pressed together on the dance floor engaged in the kind of dancing that would give Professor Mcgonagall a heart-attack if she were to witness it. Ugh, she should be out there dancing, she could feel it in her heart. Thanks to the pixie dust, she could feel her heart beat in time with the music all around her. She slightly swayed to the music and closed her eyes. If she just let the music overtake her whole body, she was sure she’d be on the dance floor when her eyes opened again.
“How's vodka sound?”
Emilia once again was pulled back to reality by Fox. She stared blankly at him then blinked to focus her mind. For a second, she couldn’t remember if they were having a conversation. It didn’t really matter. What matter was the bottle of vodka in his hand. Her face lit up and she reached her hand out. Instead of grabbing the bottle, her hand took hold of his shirt.
“Come on, before he sees us!”
Emilia pushed her way past a group of friends and they all watched her drag Fox along. If Emilia had any sense of foresight right now, she wouldn’t try so hard later to deny that she even spoke to Fox during the party. Clearly, people could see them but her mind was so muddled by the alcohol and pixie dust surging through her bloodstream. She found the perfect spot, away from the bar and away from the entrance, in a little corner of the room. It was mostly empty except for a couple of girls who were so obviously drinking for the first time in their entire life, they sat on the floor with a few empty cups surrounding them. One was crying about some boy and her friend held her close with tears streaming down her face. They didn’t even notice when Emilia gave them a disgusted look and stepped over them. She swung her arm to throw Fox on the small couch tucked away in the corner.
Emilia snatched the bottle of vodka from his hands then took a big swig of it. It burned from the second it touched her lips and even after she shoved the bottle back to him. “That’s disgusting.” She hated it, she wanted more. Emilia sank into the couch next to him and gave him an expectant look as she waited for him to drink.

Fox hadn’t expected Emilia to react so quickly to his invitation, but while he was still holding out the bottle of vodka as a kind of offering to his new goddess, she grabbed hold of his shirt and pulled him through the crowd of dancers. Fox uttered a somewhat pathetic, “Whoa!” As she did this, clenching hard to the bottle and praying that his stomach would settle down enough that he wouldn’t unload everything in the middle of the dance floor. There was a heaviness in his stomach that threatened to erupt if disturbed, and this was just the kind of thing that would do it.
He willed his feet to move along with hers, though truthfully Emilia did most of the work. Fox couldn’t take his eyes off of her as he moved, admiring the side of her face, the way her hair brushed behind her as she pushed by her friends. Maybe it was that he was too lovestruck, or maybe he was too inebriated, but Fox didn’t even notice that his friends had just arrived. Their voices disappeared into the crowd as they moved by.
“S’cuse me,” Fox said as they stepped passed the drunken girls, and for a moment he considered doubling back to make sure everything was okay. Wasn’t that the chivalrous thing to do? But eh, he’d already done his chivalrous deed for the night. It was sloshing around in his right hand as the gorgeous Slytherin pulled him onto the couch. Emilia took a quick drink from the bottle and forced it into Fox’s hands before he could really make sense of where they were and what was happening. He tried to collect his thoughts. Okay, so, calm down. You’re drunk. And you’re still drinking. You’re drinking with Emilia Montes.
There was a silence between the two as Emilia settled into the couch. Fox, caught in his own thoughts, though outwardly it looked like he was studying the bottle of vodka like it was in a museum. He blinked, then turned unfocused eyes on Emilia and said, “I think you should know that I’ve had three drinks,” he held out five fingers. “And I feel a little bit drunk.” He blinked again, recognizing that Emilia was unmoved by his admission. Then he sighed and pressed the bottle to his lips. If Emilia had taken a swig, he could take a swig. Fox didn’t need anyone to initiate a challenge when he was drunk, he would do it all himself. He tipped the bottle and gulped down as much of the alcohol has he could in one sitting.
It burned going down, and for a moment Fox felt like it would come straight back up. He passed the bottle back to Emilia and said, “It’s not even blue.”

Emilia was being extremely patient with Fox or so she thought. It was hard to keep her attention for long and he was taking his sweet time. What kind of game did he think he was playing with her? When he held up his hand to indicate how many drinks he’d had, Emilia stopped herself from laughing at him. Her eyes intently watched as he brought the bottle to his lips, her gaze lingered there even after Fox finish taking a drink.
“It’s not even blue,“ he said and passed the bottle back to her.
This time, Emilia couldn’t hold back and she giggled. She wasn’t sure why that was so funny, but it was kind of cute. If she wasn’t already watching him, she would imagine that he was pouting. She sat up, her whole body scooting closer to Fox and she placed arm behind him. "Four drinks now,” she corrected him.
Emilia knew it wasn’t a competition but she was sure she was winning, she’d only had like two drinks. There was no way she would let someone like Fox Bishop have more fun. She brought the rim of the bottle up to her lips, her tongue licked the excess liquid that had spilled out. Then she wrapped her lips around it and tipped it back to take another gulp.

Four drinks in and Fox could feel the couch slipping out from under him as he floated there in space. Fox didn’t like the rough taste of the vodka. It had burned like hazardous chemicals down his throat and left a vaguely organic flavor in his mouth, like he’d swallowed a handful of compost. He didn’t like the way the vodka tasted, but he liked the way it made him feel. That was enough to work himself up to another swig of the stuff.
Emilia’s laugh stirred something inside of him. He didn’t know her well but being his friend’s rival. he’d always assumed that she was more on the side of cruel than pleasant. But her laugh was sweet, and at least to drunk Fox, felt genuine; He was surprised that he found himself comforted by it and wanted to hear more. Actually, Fox just wanted to hear more of Emilia’s voice in general. The combination of her Spanish accent, her low cut dress, and the way she licked the bottle after him were doing some major work on him. He felt a familiar and terrifying tightness in his jeans and defensively crossed his legs to hide what was happening down there.
“Four drinks,” Fox parroted Emilia, even trying to do her accent. “But I can do five.” Actually, he wasn’t sure. He tried in vain to do the complex alcohol math that had seemed so easy just an hour or two ago, but his head wouldn’t cooperate. Frustrated, Fox forced the bottle up to his lips and took a big swig.
Fox was pretty sure he was in love with Emilia now. Had she always been this beautiful? She seemed brighter than anything else in the dark room, allowing him to really study her features. Her bright hazel eyes, her pouty red lips. “I want to kiss you,” Fox laughed. “Is that alright?” Emilia Montes

Emilia hated vodka. It wasn’t that it tasted like anything to her, but the burning sensation was worse than anything else she’d tried so far. It also left a weird trace of sweetness in her mouth. But she didn’t hate the way vodka made her feel. It acted fast and, truly, that was dangerous. She was already feeling light, almost like she could be floating on a cloud. It was nice.
Her eyes studied Fox. He was the last person Emilia would have picked to drink with but there was also a sort of lightness to him tonight. Usually, her accent was a sore spot, but she thought it was funny that he tried to copy it. When he took another drink, Emilia lightly patted him on his back. He wasn’t so bad when he let loose.
“I want to kiss you. Is that alright?“ He asked, but she didn’t say a word.
Emilia’s heart was racing faster now and she was fine blaming it on the pixie dust because there was no other logical explanation. The music was getting louder in her ears, she could feel the bass of the music causing her body to vibrate along with it. She shifted around a bit, giving her better angle at Fox.
Her hand mindlessly travelled from his back and up to his hair. She’d been dying to touch it earlier. Her fingers curled along with it. Then Emilia leaned closer to Fox, her lips almost touching his. She could smell the alcohol on his hot breath. Her chest was pressed against him and all she had to do was tilt forward to close the space between them.
"No,” Emilia responded, but she didn’t move back. Her hand wrapped around the neck of the bottle in his lap and she waited to see what he’d do next.

Fox had never felt this way before. It wasn’t just the alcohol hitting his blood, but the sudden effect Emilia had on him. In just a couple of moments he’d fallen completely in love with her. His heart was pounding through his chest as she leaned in. He closed his eyes for a moment as her hand brushed through his hair. Her touch was electric.
His question hung in the air, an unbearable cliffhanger. Emilia was in no hurry to answer. Somewhere in there, sober Fox was screaming for his drunk counterpart to open his eyes and realize what was happening. But Fox was hopelessly under Emilia’s spell now and nothing was going to change that. He could only accept that this was the most lovely girl in the world and he wanted to do everything for her up to and including supporting her financially.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion as Emilia pressed her body against his and her lips stopped just shy of his. He was ready to close the final few inches when Emilia said, “No.”
The music in the room boomed, crashing through the silence of their moment as the sudden realization came to Fox that Emilia would never love him and he was going to die alone.
So this is what it felt like to be one of Emilia’s boys.
But Fox couldn't back down from a challenge, offered or perceived. Fox forced back the sting of tears and took a moment to gather his thoughts, form a plan. Emilia had said no, but she was still there, inches from him. He could feel the warmth of her body against him, and the way her hand gripped the bottle resting between his legs was sending some serious mixed signals.
She really was challenging him.
“Okay,” Fox swallowed. “Tell me what I have to do. Anything.”

Emilia knew exactly what she was doing when she leaned in close to Fox. This was typical for Emilia Montes. She’d find herself in a secluded space with a boy and she’d let their mind run wild with anticipation and possibility, but she’d reject them right as they thought they had her. Most of the time, they wanted more than a kiss. Depending on how far they assumed they would get with her, Emilia would give them a fitting rejection. Invite her to skinny dip, she’d push you into the lake. Joke about the chains in the dungeons, she’d leave you chained up. But Fox had asked for a kiss. He had asked her if what he desired was alright. She wasn’t sure why that made her hesitate to do something more drastic.
Fox might not have asked her for much, but he had that look in his eyes. It was the one she’d seen countless times reflected back to her in the darkness. That look of adoration they gave her when she drove them wild. It was nice and flattering in the moment, but Emilia had caught on to the fact that none of them would ever truly love her. She didn’t need her step-sister whispering that into her ear to realize it was true. They wanted Emilia for her body and nothing else.
Something about Fox’s eyes giving her the same look made her stomach hurt. He was asking for a kiss, but she was sure he knew what he really wanted. She lifted the bottle from his lap and took another drink, this time letting vodka spill all over her face and dress.
Fox always had his face stuck in a book, he didn’t belong at a party. What would he hate doing the most?
“Let’s dance!” she exclaimed and stood up. Emilia’s body swayed a bit as she did so, she was drinking too fast.

If Fox sounded desperate in asking Emilia what he had to do to get a kiss from her, he didn’t realize it. In his mind it was all just another challenge. Emilia was, after all, right to reject him up front. He didn’t mean anything to her, he hadn’t done anything for her. In that moment, feeling her body against his, Fox felt that he wanted to deserve her kiss.
But he didn’t expect Emilia to pull him up from the couch so quickly. “Let’s dance!” She yelled, and as she moved toward the dance floor, Fox grabbed the vodka and downed the rest of it. Liquid courage.
Fox felt like he was walking on the ocean. The world seemed to tilt with each step and he could feel his stomach twisting and turning. He didn’t want to dance, he wanted to lie down on the floor right there, but looking down at all the feet now surrounding them he was overcome with the incredible fear that he’d be trampled.
Worst of all was that Fox had never danced before in his life. If he has some time he could read up on a few dance steps, but this was all happening in the moment. The music pounded in Fox’s ears as he looked around to study the other students. No one seemed to be dancing, really. Everyone was close and rubbing up against each other. He glanced at Emilia, his face red from the alcohol and his nerves. He wondered if she wanted him to rub against her, but decided that it was better to play it safe.
On the spot he did a rough approximation of what he thought dancing was. He shuffled his feet aimlessly and moved his fists up and down in not particular rhythm. “How am I doing?” He asked her over the music. “Is my first time!”

Emilia wasn’t sure why she was even giving Fox the time of day. Maybe it was because she had never seen him act this way around her before. He always acted so haughty and she thought he deserved to be humbled sometimes. Or maybe it had something to do with the way his eyes made her feel a fluttering in her stomach, almost like someone was lightly tickling her.
Whatever it was, Emilia told herself it was only one dance. Then she’d give him a break and let him go on his way to his friends. Emilia felt her heartbeat match the music again, she felt the rush of the vodka and pixie dust hit her all at once. Her face was flushed as she moved in perfect rhythm with the song. Her long, shiny, dark hair moving everywhere as she moved around. The boys around them stopped dancing to watch her, but Emilia’s eyes were fixed on Fox. They both probably looked ridiculous, him with his uncomfortable dancing and her hair flying everywhere. But it felt freeing almost like she was flying on her broom and it made her forget why she had dragged him to the dance floor.
Emilia laughed as a girl, whose boyfriend was watching Emilia dance, pushed her from behind and she braced herself by grabbing on to Fox’s shoulders. She couldn’t stop laughing, for whatever reason, and she pulled herself closer to him so she could bury her face in to his shirt. He’s so warm, she thought. It was comforting.

Fox wasn’t unaware of the effect Emilia seemed to have on some boys. He had even speculated, from time to time, that she had some veela blood in her, though he could never account for why he wasn’t effected by it. He imagined it must have had something to do with the percentage, but he’d never cared enough to think much more about it. Now, as Emilia began to dance, he found himself struggling to focus on anything but her movements. The music seemed to fade away as his nonsensical dance moves began to match her own.
Though Fox was hit by the full force of her dance, it didn’t seem to effect him as much as some of the other boys on the dance floor. Fox could still focus on his moves, he could admire how beautiful Emilia looked, how freely her hair whipped through the air. He was entranced, but he knew what was happening to him and he didn’t want to fight it.
Some of the other boys around them just stared blankly. Fox didn’t even notice when a girl pushed Emilia from behind. He snapped back reality as Emilia collapsed into his chest, laughing. “Are you okay?” Fox asked, unconsciously pulling her into a sort of half-hug, like he was going to protect her from the world.
“Hey!” he shouted back at the girl. “Why don’t you challenge someone whose back isn’t turned?”
He was ready to pull his wand. Sober Fox was confident that he could outduel anyone at Hogwarts, but drunk Fox’s confidence was through the roof. The girl shot a dirty look at him before pulling her boyfriend to the other side of the dance floor.
Fox turned his attention back to Emilia and repeated, “Are you okay? Why are you laughing? She could have killed you!"

Emilia was popular with the boys at Hogwarts, but the girls were a completely different story. She never failed to see the looks they gave her as she strolled passed them in the hallways. Her skirts were a little too short, her hips swayed a little too much. And while their boyfriends would crane their necks to watch her go, the girls would shoot daggers with their eyes. Without fail, every semester someone would write something unsavory about Emilia on the walls of the first floor bathroom; they said she hooked up with someone’s boyfriend, they said she was pregnant, they said she was a slut. It was all bullshit.
So when Emilia felt someone push her forward, she couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous the girl’s reaction was. It’s not like Emilia was grinding on her boyfriend. With her head still buried in Fox’s chest, she felt the stinging in her eyes but she still couldn’t stop laughing. She shook her head then resurfaced to look up at him. She could feel the hot tears streaming down her face.
“She’s just jealous,” Emilia said, repeating the same words her mother had told her over and over again. She felt absolutely pathetic. Moments like this made her think she’d end up like her mother in a loveless marriage. But Fox’s arm around made her feel loved and she wanted to get lost in it for just a moment even if it wasn’t real. She wrapped her arms around Fox’s neck to pull herself up and she rested her face between his shoulder and his neck, her lips softly pressing against his skin.

Emilia was warm in Fox’s arms, but unlike the heat of the alcohol, this warmth was real. When she looked up and Fox saw the tears glistening in her hazel eyes, he realized that he could hold her forever. He glanced around again at the students on the dance floor. He didn’t see his peers, only predators looking to hurt Emilia.
And as Fox recoiled, Emilia pulled herself closer into him, her arms finding their way around his neck and her lips touching his skin. It felt like his body might explode from the contact, but somehow he managed to keep himself in one piece. It wasn’t the kiss that Fox had expected on the couch, but this was more intimate. He wanted to kiss her back, but she hadn’t given him her permission yet.
“It’s okay,” Fox said quietly, trying his best to sound calm. “C’mon, let’s get out of here,” he slurred.
His eyes trained on the girl who had pushed Emilia, Fox wrapped his arm around Emilia and let her lean into his body as he guided her away from the dance floor and toward the exit of the Room of Requirement.
“I know a place,” he said to Emilia. “If you want to get away from all these assholes.” Emilia Montes
